I often chip off the toe and have been doing it for decades. It’s especially helpful when chipping on to very fast putting surfaces because the ball comes off kind of dead and rolls out pretty consistently. And because it comes off the face a bit dead, you can swing a little harder which really helps with getting the club through longer sticky grass. It’s an easy shot to master with just a little bit of practice. I also putt off the toe (or heel) on fast downhill putts. In fact not only does this allow you to make a harder strike, it helps offset some break in the putt too. My club pro taught me these things back in the early ‘80s when Mick was in elementary school. Look at me know, sitting here blithering on YT while Phil flys around in private jets. Just goes to prove that in golf, talent trumps knowledge.

I know most of us would just putt these....but when you're a freak around the greens, you're often trying to make them. When you're name is Phil Mickelson, that's your standard. And with 'holing it' in mind, chipping these is the way to go because you eliminate the fringe.

The Toe-Down technique came from Ray Floyd. When Ray came on tour he quickly learned he had a poor short game relative to other pros. He worked on short-game & found this technique - it gave him incredible confidence as he felt he could never miss & would always hit it cleanly - Greg Norman later adopted Ray's technique if the ball was sitting down. Ray would chip the ball even if it was 1-inch off the green he was that confident. When the ball is sitting down, absolutely use this technique

For this reason of encountering "tight lies" alone, I strongly suggest carrying at least one wedge in your bag that is configured with lower or minimal bounce. For me, it's my 56* degree sand wedge.

This was last year before Bryson got huge and started hitting it far. This was around the time when Phil started focusing on distance and leading the field in total distance proved his work had payed off. But he obviously was joking about the distance and its importance when he mentioned the weekend off, implying driving distance isn't the only thing that matters.

Phil says "get that shaft as vertical as you can " and then pronates it about 8 inches forward to hit the shot.....
@davidwaterman23
@davidwaterman23 3 жыл бұрын
He means vertical in the sense of creating an almost 90 degree angle betwen the shaft and the clubhead - like a putting stroke. He doesn't mean that the grip should be directly above the ball - he means the grip should be directly above the target line, not inside of it.
@marcelsow5817
@marcelsow5817 3 жыл бұрын
you mean 8 inches forward shaft lean (to left from front-on view). Phil is talking about the shaft being parallel to this body, i.e. you push the handle away from your body until it is straight over the club head (down-the-line view)
@apaulmcdonough2170
@apaulmcdonough2170 3 жыл бұрын
As the other two replies stated, "Vertical" relates the lie of the Shaft, not forward lean. What You need to do is acquire the correct definition of "pronates"!

@@JohnDoe-xu2vx , you may *think* you know what *"pronate"* means. Except there is no Pronation or Supination in the swing Phil used here. Phil *extended* his Left Wrist and *flexed* his Right Wrist to get Forward Shaft Lean. But hey, Conviction will always overrule Correctness ...

Does he understand what deg loft creates the max spin? Does he understand the golden dynamic loft degree that also creates the max spin? This truly helps the ball stopping action. When you watch the balls they skip right over the green. My last question is club head speed = how much distance? This will truly help him in a major ways.
