Differentiating next Xbox by making it PC Box

This seems to be what most Xbox fans want, but I can't see how Microsoft would then make money? Xbox is a closed-perform, like Switch and PS5, so they get a cut of games people buy for it, and from subs. If they allowed you to plug in a USB drive and install games that way, like on Windows, why would anyone then buy from their Xbox store or use GamePass?

@@dftfireHow many people do you know who are installing PC games via usb? Most people buy their games from Steam or another storefront. The way Microsoft competes from an ecosystem/storefront perspective is by offering more value with game pass and more competitive pricing. That’s what is great about PC. It isn’t a locked down ecosystem where one entity controls the price if everything (even though most people still just go to steam of course.) When Microsoft and other companies like Valve, Asus, etc are making consoles that access the PC ecosystem the PlayStation console starts to look like less of an appealing device.

If they were allowed to have stores on Xbox though, would that still be true? Lock-in is one of the major reasons for things like PS5, Xbox, Switch and iPhone for their respective-companies. Would Microsoft really be happy to allow such third-parties to pay no cut, and sell games that undercut their own store?

Looking at the fast release of Xbox and Xbox 360.... seems like if they did release the XB1 in 2010 and the XB1X in 2015, maybe they wouldn't be in this predicament. Now with hindsight, they really should have made the XSS as a handheld. Basically the ASUS ROG Ally, but back in 2021. That's what could have saved them this generation.

Path tracing is just RT cores + Memory bandwidth + compute cores. It's just raw Performance . What we need in the futures is new techniques on RT + AI help to reduced Rays calculations .

@ Yeah agree, i am just saying even if we shrink the GPU to have more GPU cores path tracing is just to heavy, even RTX 4090 run Cyberpunk at 1080p 60 FPS with the help of Ray reconstruction plus DLSS. New techniques need to be developed . PS6 or next gen consoles will surely be on par with RTX 4090 in the futures in terms of raw power (die shrink) but what make it different is the new architectures and new tech will be implemented that will surely surpass RTX 4090 from 2022 technology. WIll be more efficient and better implementation on graphic pipeline for developers to implemented .

They are not but they can give appeal to a platform. In another field for example, the exclusivity of iMessage in gave Apple in the US a tremendous leverage over Android. It started to get so powerful that even young teenagers had to buy iPhones to not get excluded by their classmates. Exclusives themselves are bad but let's be honest, if you are a platform owner, you want to make sure you have some exclusives features. If Nintendo started to sell their games to other platforms, the sales of their own console would plummet greatly. Yes they would make more money from the games themselves but if you calculate everything I don't know if they would benefit overall.

@ I know what you meant, I'm saying Microsoft is clearly not on the same trajectory. Sega was in a dire financial state when they dropped out of the console market. They were cutting costs extremely aggressively to make up for years of net losses. They probably would have laid off half the company if the founder didn't basically donate $700 million. Microsoft Gaming is in a very different situation. They're consistent profitable and aggressively expanding their business. They port their games to other platforms because they see an opportunity to make even more money and have realized that exclusives aren't growing their console market share anyway.

It's odd how Xbox fans are both all "it should be about the console, we need more exclusives to give people a reason to buy one" and also "all Microsoft owned studio games must come to PC, so we can play them there with better framerates and visuals". Why get a PS5 when you just have to download the same games on xbox that comes with your subscription. Xbox fans have been welcoming. They are making a PC hybrid console that runs windows in "Xbox mode". They already announced that this version of windows will be available for Windows this year. They don't need exclusives anymore bc this will just be a PC and therefore can run Epic/Steam (and yes PS games that are on steam) This device will likely be more expensive than PS6 though. MS will likely also launch many more kinds of HW some of which will be traditional consoles and therefore cheaper

Each Xbox generation sells way less. Series consoles got a big Covid boost. All that before the multiplat strategy, no less. Imagine how pitiful another standard console would sell… especially if, say, a launch title Halo also releases on PS5. Its too late for the Xbox brand. During their one truly successful generation (360) they just kept pumping out halo and gears. That's it. The "dude bro" machine. Now everything is coming to PS and switch 2? Ive had gamepass off and on but once you've tried everything you're interested in, it just becomes an expensive monthly deduction that you hope you didn't forget to cancel. Yes they have day 1 releases but like most offers (like starfield and Indiana Jones, both of which i played on gamepass) theyre just mediocre slop. Not sure why Xbox fans are happy. A 3rd party Xbox would not cost Microsoft anything. They’d likely make money off licensing and the box provides an avenue for software sales. Most consoles have relied on a subsidy model. Lose money on the box, make it on the software. A box not made by Microsoft that provides consumers a buy in path to Xbox games and gamepass, is win, win. Likely, a 3rd party makes money off the box sale. They won’t take a loss. As console prices rise, it sure feels like $1000 for a console is coming. Good or bad, who knows. But the competition in that space is great for innovation

But if you were a company like Samsung, JVC, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba or whoever, why would it be good for you? Xbox’s marketing is outdated. They need to go all-in on digital engagement-TikTok, KZbin, influencers, and viral marketing. Retail ads don’t sell consoles anymore; social media and Game Pass hype do. PlayStation and Nintendo are miles ahead in creating buzz-Xbox needs to catch up or get left behind.

Nintendo and PlayStation invest a ton in traditional marketing channels (tv ads, sports events, commercials etc) and push FOMO with high quality exclusives. Meanwhile Xbox has been busy pushing “Xbox Ambassadors” to fight console wars (and more recently try to convince people that exclusives are bad and multiplatform is the way to go) on social media and podcasts in the hopes of changing the narrative among hardcore audiences, which would then in theory trickle down to the casual gamers. Needless to say that hasn’t worked. “Game Pass hype” is a prime example of that. For the majority of gamers Game Pass is a waste of money because they only want to or have time to play 2-3 games a year anyway. These days you can play tons of high quality games for free or on deep sales, and for hundreds of hours. For a lot of people time is now the limiting factor and not money, and GP is just adding to the time problem. And even for the hardcore audiences they likely want to play many high quality new third party games which aren’t on Game Pass. It’s one of those things just like Steam Deck, where if you’ll listen to gaming content creators you’d think everyone and their mom has GP and a deck but in reality both are niche products.

Differentiating Xbox by moving to an Nvidia platform with a Grace + Blackwell in the $800 price point with a performance target of a $1500 PC and doing a revenue share with Nvidia on game sales / gamepass. Being able to leverage doing 4K with much higher quality RT and/or full path tracing with MFG would be well beyond what Sony has been hinting at for a PS6. I think Phill is trying to say just doing a semi-custom AMD APU is not going to be sufficiently different to what Sony is likely to do.

I don’t think the Xbox strategy is that bad, the franchises coming to PlayStation can either be paid for full price to use on their console sometime after release, or someone could just buy an Xbox and get gamepass to included for them. For the price of several games it’d be worth it.

What Microsoft has realized is right now..everyone is locked into a storefront.... I'm not going to start buying games on the windows store no matter how good they make it..if i already have 500 games on steam.. Xbox gamers PSgamers Pc gamers Nintendo gamers are all locked in.. But..if i can bring all my steam games to an xbox console..and now my steam games are just a part of my library.. Yes i might buy an xbox..and i might start buying games on the xbox store..because of all the features I'm getting there.. Thats what xbox gets out of putting other storefronts on their console.. They set up their ecosystem as a hub for gaming..which will make their consoles more appealing to more ppl..and potentially boost game sales in their storefront.

I wonder would they go boutique machine builders route, where you have several options across gpu CPU ram and storage? For instance maybe if you're on a 4k TV you're gonna want a GPU with the tough capabilities of like a step above PS5 Pro at this point, and then you'd also likely want the at least mid range CPU if not high end. Then let's say I'm getting one for a kid playing on a smaller 1080p-1440p display, then I may still choose that decent CPU just in case but I may step the GPU down since I'm not pushing 4k every. I'm not really sure how else you differ if you're both using the same supplier. They're not gonna give either company very exclusive machines with exclusive features such as something like an upscaling core or RT core or whatever accelerators come next. At the end of the day if it's not offering different specs the software must have tons of tricks.

Xbox games on the other hand, are day 1 on PC, and anywhere you can use gamepass actually, the exact opposite of exclusives. They are also releasing all these games on the PS, a few months later by the sounds of it, and nobody would be shocked if that gets shorter. So, if one could only afford to buy a console, 1 console only, the obvious choice is either from Nintendo, or Sony, and they offer vastly different experiences, so making that choice is even easier for most people, but Xbox isn't even in the discussion, it is quite literally the worst choice in this scenario. Buy a PS, play all of their games, and Xboxs games...or buy an Xbox and only play Xbox games, with 0 access to Sony games, all for roughly the same price 🤷 You know this true

Today I got an e-mail from a computer hardware store, where you could pre-order the rtx 5080. They are only available in PC's that are built with high-end specs (I guess that is their way of making an even bigger profit on the new rtx cards). The cheapest one you can pre-order is around 4000 Euro (case, power supply, motherboard, cpu, memory, storage and the 5080 FE). The 5080 sold seperately from other brands start at 2000 Euro. So, for decent performance and path tracing in a console, expect to see prices higher than 2000 Euro. If that is the case, then what is the point of a console? Consoles sell because it's a dedicated platform at 500-800 Euro today. I don't see path tracing happening in consoles under 2000 Euro, unless they directly partner with Nvidia for path tracing and with partnerschip deals they can get the hardware cheaper. MSRP by Nvidia does not matter anymore, as it's the availability that determines the price. Just like the disc drive for the PS5 pro, is being sold at 190 Euro here in stores that have stock. The MSRP by Sony also doesn't matter anymore.

It's going to be a PC like box In a far more aggressive modular way than we've ever seen before , and will probably very synergistically work hand In hand with their handheld. Hmm, not sure yet if it'll be on PlayStation. But the idea of an "Xbox Cloud" HDMI dongle you can just plug into a TV and it comes with one Bluetooth controller for say $60-70 (no more than the cost of a typical game) could bring more people in.
