When there's a piece of hardware to sell and a lucrative software ecosystem tied to it, platform holders are incentivized to produce and cultivate the best games they can. Single platform optimization also allows more time to be spent on design rather than on just getting a game working. The perceived audience demographic can also inform the design choices in ways that might not otherwise occur, ie: the heavy gameification and third person aspects of Resident Evil 4. Better games are pro consumer. More unique games are pro consumer. Games just existing and being everywhere doesn't actually mean the games themselves are better for consumers. Microsoft is definitely publishing some great games and will be more successful as a publisher than they have been as a console maker for awhile now. PS owners will enjoy the ports they're getting and they will sell. It is nice to get games you want, where you want them, but something has been and will be lost, just as it was when Sega went third party.

Sega's death was sad because they took good ideas, hardware, and niches with them. What does Microsoft offer with their Xbox consoles that you couldn't get anywhere else? The XSX is basically a re-badged PS5. With less features! (Like gyro or adaptive triggers.) The PS5 and Switch are competition enough. Microsoft's "competition" isn't making any of the other consoles better. If anything, Sony focusing on competing with Microsoft instead of Nintendo has made the PlayStation worse.

I don't get how many times Microsoft can say "no red lines" and "everything is coming over" before people stop going "does everything REALLY mean everything?" Like outside of titles that are older and not popular enough to warrant the cost of porting. I do think South of Midnight might literally be their last game to not be "announced" for PS5 (and that's gonna come eventually). People keep saying "but exclusives sell consoles" but what part of Microsoft's strategy in the last year+ has told you they have any interest in selling Xboxes? They literally run ads telling you not to buy them. They want to be a software and subscription company, not a hardware one. People really need to just take the hint and expect just about everything to go to Switch 2, PS5, and PC. If you want Gamepass and don't want to deal with a questionably reliable cloud version, you can get an Xbox because Gamepass will never be on Switch or PS, but otherwise, yeah, the console is not their focus anymore and they have basically put a giant siren on it saying that it's not their focus.

The XBox Series consoles are fine and affordable boxes for a TV setup to run Game Pass, which is the one thing a PlayStation doesn't allow - or a Switch at that moment. That's why XBox consoles still can be useful especially for casual gamers who don't need the option to "play all" and have a Ps5/ Switch in their household. Besides that ... The reason for XBOX going full multiplatform is because the exclusives strategy is no longer viable for Microsoft and Xbox in 2024 2025 due to the stagnating and declining GamePass subscribers and the Xbox home console market share. The gamble Xbox once felt like can work with the exclusives strategy when they bought Activision Blizzard, it no longer works. Brilliant how Sony wasted Xbox years on this for the GamePass and Xbox home console market share declining to this point today which is the cause of Forza Horizon 5 PlayStation 5 and everything happening now.

Not sure about this. I own both systems, and my primary console is the xbox. Why? well, I like the menus, store shopping experience, the controller is far superior in my opinion, Game Pass is an awesome deal, but the thing I like the most, is how Microsoft encourages social game play. I play with my friends most of the time, and that experience is FAR SUPERIOR than the playstation. And, don't be surprised if you see Sony announcing more games on the PC and maybe what might become the default (xbox) for a large portion of their games. If Spiderman, which was one of their best sellers, barely broke even (what they claim) then they have just as much of a problem as Microsoft. It seems even the Playstation base isn't enough to pay for these AAA games.

​​@@m0riarty I also own both consoles and I prefer the PS5. I play way more on the PS5 than the Series X. However, I see myself keep having an Xbox because consoles are way more practical than PC. For example, I'm currently playing Indiana Jones on Xbox while I'm in bed. It's just easier. Also, in general, games are better optimize on consoles. On PC it's always tricky to find the right sertings. And consoles are cheaper than a PC with similar power. Saying this, it totally makes sense for an Xbox console.

Naw...I've owned all the Playstations 1-5. The X box series X was my first X box. I used to be an ignorant xbox hater BUT I can say I actually enjoy the overall experience of the series x though. And PS5 is only backwards compatible with ps4. I've been able to find a lot of my old favorite games for cheap digital on Xbox store. I own both now. But with future hardware likely going way up in price I'll likely just choose 1. I would lean xbox if the hardware is good.

Too little to gain, not worth the risk, Xbox userbase is smaller and less likely to buy games specially at full price compared to Playstation, look up the sales numbers for any multiplatform, and Xbox sales pale big time in comparison to Playstation. That's why the other way around makes more sense, Xbox isn't selling as many consoles as Playstation anyway, so why bother to keep games exclusive at least for the entirety of their lifetime. Makes more sense to release first on Xbox and PC and then on Playstation at the very least, the same way Playstation usually releases its games later on PC. You give users that invested in your platform a reason for staying (playing those games first), but at the same time get to gain revenue from selling on other platforms

So far AFAICR none of the titles that have been or were supposed to be Xbox exclusives have had day-one releases on Playstation. Gamepass/Xbox is still needed if people want to play stuff as soon as it releases. Apart from that and the general convenience, I don't know.

I have a question. For the last couple of generations, the hardware between PlayStation and Xbox has been pretty much equal, making first-party game exclusives the defining factor between the two. Assuming Xbox stays in the game (they will), and both companies resign to the fact that exclusive titles are not business-sustainable, will we see a more aggressive hardware "war" between the two companies? If so, then this really sounds like a win for consumers.

@@Sladey1601 No, they are not releasing all of their games on PC. inFamouns Second Son (and First Light), Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank 2016, Gran Turismo Sport, Gran Turismo 7, Demon's Souls, Uncharted Collection nor Astrobot aren't on PC (and I'm pretty sure there are more games).

Uh, if Microsoft is serious about their strategy of making the Xbox into a streamlined PC capable of running Steam, then Sony doesn't really have a choice BUT to reciprocate the porting of PS titles to Xbox. Anything they put out for PC will, by default, be playable on Xbox. Of course, it won't have Xbox network features or achievements or any of the superfluous garbage that's tacked on - but the games themselves will be playable. I really don't think it is in Microsoft's best interest to allow third party storefronts on their console, but then, I don't really see Microsoft as giving much of a damn about gaming except as a lever for other aspects of their business. I think Microsoft is more concerned with SteamOS/Linux gaining more and more compatibility with native Windows software by the day. If Steam can use gaming to leverage the mass market onto a Linux based OS, then it stands to reason that more applications will garner native Linux support - and not just video games, but productivity related software as well. Once you start getting more productivity related software running natively... then it's a lot more tempting for corporations to switch over to a platform where they don't have to pay for licenses. Will it be an overnight shift? Of course not. But looking out five or ten years... eh, it's a big enough potential threat that I can see MS wanting to get out ahead of it by trying to curate a centralized cross-platform gaming system as well as shifting more and more of their services to subscriptions that can be accessed from any device. Remember, of course, that the only reason Microsoft made the Xbox in the first place is because they were concerned that Sony was going to turn the PS2 into a living-room PC, though that ended up just being a case of Sony blowing smoke up everyone's backsides in order to skirt European import taxes on luxury electronics.

Sorry that me having responsibilities outside of playing the next God of War and appreciating being able to play Spiderman if I want is something that would be nice. There was a point where I hadn't updated my SX in over a year. I had to connect an Ethernet cable to it. Guess what. All my quick resume games were right where I left off. The PS5 simply pulls up a network error and forces me to sit there for half an hour while the new software installs just so I can play my game. Oh. And this happens on like a monthly basis.

Same thing that happened to SEGA is happening to Microsoft. Sony hype train juggernaut and moneybags just too big for the competition. This time though, Microsoft only have themselves to blame because they had WAY more money and resources than SEGA ever did and they blew it by trying to cheap out on console production when there was no need. That 7th gen XBox One was the beginning of the end, they will look back at that now with tremendous regret. Not sure why the surprise. MS has been prepping for this for years now. I mean Xbox on any platform means the games will be going to multi-platform, so the more gamers you can get your hands on the better for all gamers. Clearly MS has taken the reigns from Phil and the Xbox team. MS is worth a $trillion or so so they will be fine no matter what they decide to do with the Xbox so this is not the same as near broke Sega when they got out of the hardware business. They should be able to improve the games especially on the PS5 Pro. The single platform exclusive model doesn't seem to work especially for MS so I am fine with this. I always own all of the consoles, fine with this as an Xbox gamer. It really doesn't matter how anyone feels about this as MS is moving forward with this strategy.
