Satch is 67. He can shred better than 99.9999% of guitar players alive or dead and has forgotten more about guitar than some of the best ever knew. He will have off days but it literally doesn't matter if he forgot how to play today, he's a living legend.

Fuck Joe satriani and these fools talking on this set. I wish I knew Sammy Hagar so he could fire Joe satriani... I was playing Van Halen when Van Halen started playing Van Halen. I should be writing a new album for Sammy... I wish I knew Alex so I could jam with him and write some songs... I think I could get him to go buy another set of drums and record a new album with Sammy and me. There's just not a nice way to tell you guys that Joe satriani sucks at playing Van Halen

5:25 IMPORTANT POINT to make is that in an interview Satriani told you that he intentionally held himself back from playing EVH music because he didn’t want to “accidentally steal” anything. He respectfully added that working on it was a conflict in his brain as he was hearing someone else’s style and not his own. He showed nothing but respect for EVH. And these “INFLUENCERS” probably have been playing EVH for many many years and were looking for an opportunity to elevate their own egos by bashing someone who could run circles around them any day of the week! Joe was kind enough to show his progress as he was still working on EVH stuff. He could have easily gave himself more time by saying that they were saving that performance for a live show. But this humble legend has no problem showing his human side! I LOVED seeing him “work” on EVH moves and his child like smiles when he nailed an EVH riff. He was having fun like we all did the first time we played a popular song for the first time! Awesome to she that! Not cool that these “influencers” attacked him to serve their own ego!

Ed... contradicts himself all the time. He played covers early on. He learned some solos note for note early on. He played the same songs night after night. The WHY bother doing it again is because if something is amazing, it's probably worth doing again. If it's good, it's good. But you don't have to do the same song 20 times in one concert. But in general, Ed did mix up his solos a little bit live so he wasn't a robot. Even his main solo was usually a blend of a bunch of other bits and pieces he would stitch together into one solo. Not just Eruption and a bow. He'd add other stuff in there. I didn't see all this about Stern but anyone critical of Satch must not have ever listened to his early stuff.

I can’t put anyone down who makes music. Even if it’s a kid who maybe does a few licks I like. I hate people that do nothing but judge other musicians. Ive watched Phil back when I think he was “testing guitars in a music store”. I loved the energy and the respect he held for each instrument. Anyway putting down Satch and Vai are things I’ve always never understood? Incredible at what they do on guitar. If it weren’t for Joe who knows what woulda became of Steve. I’ve loved guitar since I was a drummer. I started that as a toddler. My oldest brother put me behind his kit and helped move my arms. I’m a lefty on drums and a lot of stuff. But still I got a pretty good early start. I always played air guitar before I decided to get a guitar and teach myself something. I was in a 3 guitar band for my first experience on the instrument. We played a lot f harmony stuff. Back then it was Skynyrd,Lizzy and bands I still love today. Anyway thanks for letting people know Joe is an incredible talent. Got to see him at the Tower theater. I saw so many great musicians there. There’s a reason Bowie made his first live album there. Sounds so good! I saw Angus with Bon there. I saw a young Schenker. I put a few tunes on my site. UFO a force It tour was incredible. I posted This Kids. A fantastic Tune. A little Tommy Bolin also is on the post. I loved his playing and singing. Anyway let people know it’s not just playing fast as so many seem to do these days. I loved Johnny Winter. He played so tastefully. Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush we saw first time in 1975. I was going to concerts since I was 9. So I’ve seen many. Gary Moore with Greg Lake was 1st show I took my wife to. Saw him again playing Rock. He was nuts! Led Zeppelin. Deep Purple in what I considered their best work. Anyway it’s all not just sweep arpeggios. Or playing as fast as you can. Schenker has melody. To spare. He’s tasteful. Kerry Livgrin. Saw him at Villanova Collage Kansas Masque tour. It’s on a recording titled broadcast of innocence. Him and Rich Williams are tasteful musicians. I saw Wishbone Ash with 2 fantastic players. Laurie Wisefield and Andy Powell. I saw Hunter and Wagner with Alice Cooper. Saw Alice original band Really liked them. They wrote 5 great albums in a row ! That’s tuff. Saw VH it was the first time they toured. Opened for Journey. Montrose played 2nd after VH. There’s a recording of them online from that show. Met Schon. He’s incredible also. And Montrose! That was the Tower theater as well. Sick line up! Met Schon. Cool dude. Saw him with Santana when he was really young! He was epic. I saw jist about everyone I wanted to. I missed Hendrix though. And love all his work. I saw Randy Hansen at the Tower do a wonderful tribute though. Was great. I saw Peter Haycock with Climax Blues Band. He ripped on guitar. Ameritech Sense of Direction. Flight. And So Many Roads. He was fantastic He played that guitar Mark Farner started to use. Chrome plated. Love to hear Phil play one of them! Never see em anywhere? it’s not about that. I’m just reliving when there was so many great concerts I could go to. You guys please keep the rock flowing cause the world need great music. Thanks! I used to love those videos Phil X made on different guitars. Had such energy! You’re holding one of my favorites. Love SGs. Anyway again. God bless. Here’s UFO. A little Tommy Bolin from Philly. My hometown. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iojZmaFmo5uSnpIsi=nVhVlDKBkvRvanZs

The most bizarre part of all that is…what were the odds that they would ever even play “Mean Streets” anyway? I don’t see Sammy ever singing that. So if it wasn’t even in the potential setlist why go there? It seemed like it was this innocent question from Howard (if there is such a thing) and Joe just answered honestly. Personally I think that Howard appearance was a colossal mistake. Of course now the tour isn’t an Eddie tribute anyway and has just turned into a Sammy tribute instead.

The reason Joe hadn't nailed that intro is only cause he didn't or hasn't actually tried to .come one where talking bout Joe Satrianti .had he wanted to play it exactly like Ed he could .take a day or two and poof it's a done deal .like alot of people said he would have gotten bashed had he played it note for note perfectly .he's in a no win situation in that regard .he's damned if he does damned if he doesn't and he knos that that's why he didn't and will never attempt to play it exactly the way Ed did .he will put his spin on it .Joe is a shredder like Yngwie .Gilbret .Via (on some days) where as Eddie was never a shredder .it's not his style .he could play as fast as anybody on planet earth if he felt like it on any given day but he chose not to .same as Randy Rhoads he wasn't a shredder but trust me he could play solos at lightning speed and technically precise at the same time but he was more about the music and playing with feel and emotion something shredders tend not to do 99% of the time .Yngwie Malmsteen was the first true shredder but damn his music suffered from that style of playing in IMO .that up and down the neck repetitive style that doesn't even sound natural from a guitar and has no feel and emotion at all .Guys like Ed and Randy especially Rhoads played with such feel and emotion that it actually made his audiences feel connected to him through his playing .was so melodic .in that respect there wasn't a player on the planet then or now that could play live like that .I saw Randy .Ed .Via .Yngwie .all those guys live .only guy that played that shed or instrumental style that had any real feeling to it was Jeff Beck .

Exactly! I can’t play Eddie’s stuff very well at all…..but I can play Yngwie’s stuff (not quite up to warp speed but it’s going well). Strange how my mind and fingers can do one fairly easily and not the other. Like Eddie’s legato triplets to picked triplets back to legato triplets back to picked….that kicks my ass backwards! But like pedal tone string skipping a la Yngwie, no problem. My mind just does not wrap itself around EVH’s playing style. But it takes to Yngwie’s like a duck to water. I’m sure others have the opposite problem. And some have no problem with either. Go figure.

Yeah the criticism is pathetic. 1) he hasn't even really learned the songs yet (at the time of the show being filmed). 2) Apparently, he was given no notice that he was playing and didn't rehearse. 3) If he decides to play something sounding like himself, that is fine, otherwise just get a session player to do note for note. I think he sounded great all things considered

That was such a bummer. For one, hearing Satch struggle is only deferential to EVH. Also, EVH is so huge that Satch probably spent some time and thought on how NOT to play too much like him and be his own artist. And third, what guitar player gets anything right every time? And also, do these fans think EVH would have enjoyed seeing them tear down another player? These are some of the same guys that try to tell Wolfgang how to honor his own father. I hate to see Satch take an L on anything, but the “community” took a bigger L and made a mountain out of a molehill on this one. Respect to Satch. Respect to EVH’s legacy.

Joe's tone, style and musical sense is pretty different than what Ed did, his sound is very different and because Sammy can't sing those songs in the Key they're supposed to be in of course, it doesn't quite work... They should have done two Sammy songs and one Van Halen song like finish what you started that slightly different version might have been pretty cool. It’s such a minor thing he probably thought here’s a little gag, a little thing from another player that’s hard to do and here’s why. He’s a guitar teacher for heavens sake. Demonstrating why it’s hard. Sadly the nation of the offended and brutal take pot shots at everything. Most haven’t played anything bigger than a Moose lodge or Moms Basement. But I digress. Sorry. Our hero’s are human. They need rehearsal respect and human dignity. Even Wolfie took 3 or 4 days drilling the three songs he played for the 2 benefit concerts and he was in VH for fifteen years. He’s stated that in recent interviews. Satch will kill it on tour. Peace out.

Love how the rock and roll community is supposed to be all hard core, but still gossip online like little school girls. He said/she said, tonewood, pickups, tube vs digital, who plays what better or properly...... it's almost a soap opera.

Haha, there’s a reason Joe is still making brilliant albums and playing for thousands of people and KZbin influencers are strictly on KZbin.

Nobody would expect JS to play Van Halen songs flawlessly without practicing. And even then I wouldn't expect him to sound exactly like EVH. The main problem is they went on Howard Stern when they weren't yet ready. It wasn't just the Mean Street intro either. 5150 sounded kind of marginal. The response wasn't that surprising.

Joe is awesome, period. Bottom line is he wasn't prepared enough for that Stern thing. None of them were. Sammy jumped the gun going on there. But oh well, is what it is.

a vast majority of guitar players dont play solos the same every time or is the case with old blues players who wouldnt even play songs that were featured in their wheelhouse the same you have players who include certain elements of the og solo in there but alter it like SRV in pride and joy theres elements on the recorded version that he would play but he didnt play the same solo

No need to defend Satch! Joe himself replied to that influencer that Phil X mentioned and realised the 'influencer' was being tongue in cheek.

Love Joe Satriani. Dudes one of my influences. But when I think EVH... I don't associate Joe. Hell, even Joe himself has admitted he has purposely tried NOT playing like EVH his entire career! When I think EVH, I think someone like Satchel from Steel Panther. Even Phil X. Satchel played in Atomic Punk for YEARS. I don't even know why they are doing this project... There's only one Eddie.

Satch going out and playing a legends music ESPECIALLY one who's passing in still fresh in their fan's minds is asking for trouble/stress/criticism/comparisons etc. But.... A VH tribute tour with Satchel "Russ"Michael Starr "Ralph" M Anthony and a bad ass drummer... They could and have pulled it off.

Eddie is incredibly beloved, and deservedly so. It's a fools errand to even try to 'fill his shoes' but if you are gonna attempt it I would suggest that you need to be a lot more prepared and rehearsed than Joe was. I think the reaction was as extreme as it was because the attempt seemed slapdash and consequently some felt it was maybe a little disrespectful.

Joe's ego won't let him play VH. He has to put his touch on it which totally changes it. Phil on the other hand doesn't let the ego get in the way and totally nails EVH.

They hadn't even had one rehearsal, Satch will nail it, night after night, and the tour will be the closest thing to Van Halen you will ever see again!

I didn't see the video, or the comments concerning, Joe.. but together you do come across as somewhat patronizing, here - like no one else has an opinion... and while Phil extols the virtues of his wife's, fish pie - Mr Shred takes the opportunity to promote his merch.. yeah sure why not - the icing on the cake. hahaha.. A fine line, boys - who was it who used to say, 'keep it real..'
@MastersofShred4 ай бұрын
I’m sorry you feel that way. I in no way was trying to patronize Joe nor do I think I have :) I loved Joes performance with Sammy, I just wanted to address the unneeded negativity that followed his performance and put a positive spin on the situation. Joes a monster player and absolute LEGEND. Case closed 😎👍🎸🔥

Joe's style of play is shred just like Yngwie .Gilbret .Joe Stump (a guy that has been totally forgotten and probably the most underrated guitarist in the history of Metal) Yngwie and Stump were the first two real shredders .Eddie was never from the shredder sub genre .Joe could practice Meanstreet for a couple days and probably played it note for note had he wanted to but thats not his thing hes gonna put his spin on it and purposely so to make it in his style .thats also the respectful way to go .either was he go's whether its like Ed or with his take on it he's gonna catch flack from diehard EVH fans and if played it like Ed his own fans would have said wth thats not the Joe Shred we kno .other than Brad Gillis you never saw any of thos other guys in Ozzy band try and play it exactly like Randy on his songs .no they (Jake Zach .Gus .Via .Holmes .Cantrell) all put their take or spin on it cause they all had a specific style of their own .so as for all the people gonna hate on Joe for not playing Meanstreet like Ed did its not that he couldn't had he wanted to maybe practice it for a day or two straight he could have but thats not wat he wanted to do .he did that outta respect for Ed .how in the hell you gonna hate on Joe Satrianti he's a living legend and a true shedder .something guys like Eddie .Rhoads .DMartini .Lynch were not .they were melodic players that was more into playing with feel and emotion rather then just as fast as possible with repetitive licks that truthfully and honestly isn't really a natural sound from a gutair .
@johnhagan5824 ай бұрын
Would love for the creator of this channel or any musical channel for that matter do a video on Joe Stump (the forgotten shredder .75% of your subscribers I guarantee have never ever heard of Joe Stump .he's a amazing and successful gutair player from the 80s and 90s .

I think Sammy should have picked someone that was maybe already known to do Van Halen already, instead of having to work it up. Paul Gilbert, Phil X, Deraps, Dweezil Zappa, Marty 5150, etc, etc. Wolfgang is the obvious choice except that he wants no part of any of this. Some of these guys LIVE to play Van Halen stuff. Joe is a great guitarist but he isn’t known for playing any Van Halen stuff. I’m sure he’ll work it up just fine. He’s a pro. But there was an easier path down this road. Hell, Phil X could have sang the DLR songs that Sammy is loath to sing.
