I met Phil at a bar in LA. He was watching this incredible jazz band (as were we all), and you could tell what an absolute fan of music he was. He was so locked into the group, smiling and just enjoying himself. I gathered up the courage to go say hi, and buy him a beer. He was everything he appears to be. There's no show. He's just a wonderful excited man and so incredibly humble. His gratitude was palpable (this was before his Bon Jovi fame). Phil is such a wonderful musician, but most importantly, he's a damn decent human being. So happy to see his career skyrocket.

I echo the same sentiments about Phil. I met him when he was in Triumph at this place in Waterloo, Ontario Canada (many moons ago) called The Red Pepper on a Tuesday night when they held open jam sessions. The guitarist for the “house band” on those Tuesday nights knew Phil from within the local music community and invited him to come out and play a few songs with them (and he did). But before the show as everyone was setting up I was introduced and Phil and I talked. He was incredibly nice, funny, humble and just so easy to talk to. It’s always good to see the good people do well. Phil is certainly one of them.

Rick was like a kid with a brand new toy having Phil X in his studio: show us this, show us that, do that weird thing, interrupting him with another question or comment about his playing! Of course, it was all good; Phil appreciated others appreciating his talent and musicality, taking no offense whatsoever. For us spectators, the whole thing was quite amusing and groovy to watch! Definitely one of your top episodes, Rick! THANX!

I also play bouzouki as a profession and only want to say that the 6-string bouzouki is still very much alive, and has not been replaced by the 8-string even if the 8-string is more standard since Xiotis, who is a later bouzouki player, not one of the originals. Also the picture shown is "Irish bouzouki", not the kind that Phil X is talking about. Other than that, this was a great video. Thank you. :)

Loved this free-style format Rick. Phil's playing is another level up. I'm fortunate to have common friends, and have experienced the X up close in bars and private parties.

Phil's playing and energy is so infectious, I had a smile on my face watching the whole 20 minute video. 😀 When guitar masters like Rick and Rhett shakes their head and laugh, You know you're watching a special guitarist.🤘

I loved watching Rick and Rhett crack up when Phil was playing something crazy. I am the same way. When I see a mind blowing musician killing it, it just makes me laugh (certainly not at them, just from sheer joy).

If you can get Rick Beato to belly laugh a dozen times in 20 minutes, because of how blown away he is at your guitar style and grace, you are a guitar god. Wooo, Phil X!

This is such a great vid Mr B. Not only because of the incredible exposition of extraordinary technique... but mostly because this what we need. SHEER JOY OF MUSIC. Thank you once again for brightening my day and inspiring me to spend the next several hours loving the act of playing.

I met Phil years ago when he was still in Toronto and he's still the same great guy. He brings such a great positive energy to all his projects. He was a YT great long before many. As far as his credits go I know of a few from Canadian bands where they brought him in to cut tracks cause their own guitar player couldn't make it work.

Rick - I have to say you have without doubt, the most appreciative head wobbles I have ever witnessed, when something hooks you in it is brilliant to watch. Just gotten into P90’s myself after being a humbucker head forever. I have been enlightened. Keep up the good work. Best from the UK.

If you guys want to listen to the full version of that first song that Phil X is playing, it´s called: "Perasmenes mou Agapes" by Manolis Chiotis. It´s an absolute classic and Chiotis is considered one of the greatest bouzouki virtuosos of all time, basically the equivalent of Django Reinhardt or EVH on the bouzouki and an innovator on the instrument. There are countless versions of the song, incl. a pretty cool "metalized" cover by Gus G (Firewind, former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist), who rearranged the song for electric guitar.
