As part of Temple University, Intellectual Heritage Department’s, Core Futures 2021 virtual programming for March 22nd - 26th, 2021, Philadelphia Jazz Project in collaboration with our partner, PhillyCAM created a 45 minute video. The video is entitled; Philadelphia Jazz Stories and features dialogue with musicians; Denise Montana, Odean Pope, Leon Jordan Sr., Barbara Montgomery, Victor North, Olivia Hughart, Elijah Thomas, Erica Corbo, Josh Lee, historians, Diane D. Turner, Ph.D, Steve Rowland and George Starks Ph.D and visual artists, Denise Erickson, Joe Hasenauer, Dylan Caleho, Akinseye Brown and Eric Battle.
This video project was inspired by the book, Philadelphia Jazz Stories Illustrated: Volume One which was published by the Philadelphia Jazz Project in December of 2019. This book is a colorful collection of memories and historical accounts from, or about key figures of Philly’s Jazz community. Featuring musicians such as Tony Williams, Raymond A. King, Charles Ellerbe, Rufus Harley, Ellis Tollin, Denise Montana, Byard Lancaster, Pat Martino, Odean Pope & others, each story is accompanied by an exquisite illustration by visual artists like Jerry Pinkney, Michelle Ortiz, Eric Battle & many others.
