The Philadelphia Zoo, located in the Centennial District of Philadelphia, on the west bank of the Schuylkill River, is the first true zoo in the United States. It was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21, 1859, but its opening was delayed by the Civil War until July 1, 1874. The zoo opened with 1,000 animals and an admission price of 25 cents. For a brief time, the zoo also housed animals brought over from safari on behalf of the Smithsonian Institution, which had not yet built the National Zoo.
The Philadelphia Zoo is one of the premier zoos in the world for breeding animals that are difficult to breed in captivity. The zoo also works with many groups around the world to protect the natural habitats of the animals in their care.
The zoo is 42 acres (17 ha) and the home of nearly 1,300 animals, many of which are rare and endangered. Special features include a children's petting zoo, a paddleboat lake, a rainforest themed carousel, a ropes course, and many interactive and educational exhibits.
Exhibits
African Plains
Say hello to some of the Zoo’s largest (height and weight) species. African Plains is home to a white rhino that loves to be brushed, a tower of giraffes that stands head and shoulders above the rest, and a pair of bathing beauties all sure to add smiles to your safari.
Bear Country
In this land of gushing waterfalls, babbling brooks and cool, deep pools, discover our burly bears representing some of the world's most unique species.
Big Cat Falls
A stunning landscape of lush habitats greets guests as they come face to face with big cats from around the world, including snow leopards, pumas, Amur tigers, African lions, jaguars and Amur leopards.
Bird Valley
Flock to the valley - Bird Valley - and encounter species like our beautiful flamingos, chorusing trumpeter swans, shrieking crested screamers and more.
KidZooU
The KidZooU: Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo & Faris Family Education Center is a wildlife academy that unites a world-view education center with an up-close and personal children’s zoo. KidZooU is an indoor and outdoor experience offering dynamic displays, opportunities for hands-on learning, and rare and unusual goats, sheep, chickens, and ducks that will delight toddlers and tweens alike.
Outback Outpost
Here you'll find some of Australia's giants, including Kangaroo and Emu's.
PECO Primate Reserve
Home to some of the world's most endangered primates - gorillas, orangutans, gibbons, lemurs, and golden lion tamarins - the Reserve is a place for primates to connect.
Penguin Point

The tunnels around the zoo was a nice addition to the zoo. Gives the different animals an opportunity to be outside. That was one of my favorite aspects of the zoo.

Likely, they may be renovating the exhibit or doing maintenance work. They have their reasons. They have to remain AZA compliant at all times. And nothing goes unnoticed by their inspectors, even the smallest things. ZAA is the same way.

Great video Tom!!! We had a great time there last year April 2023 when taking my only grandson! It's changed a lot since we took my eldest granddaughters about nine years ago. Live horse rides are gone, but he had a great time watching all the animals. At four years old, he climbed the rope and enjoyed the gigantic playground area with the big kids. All the extras are discounted now with membership and using our phone with the codes in the app was the new way to go! It was convenient but I as grandma was initially on a bit of a learning curb...lol. The new Dinosaur Exhibits (opened last year) was also really great!

That's ok their store is a bit pricey. My stuffed animal with a zoo name vest on it was $20.00. Even with my discount, things were a bit pricey. But you do what you can support. Have to go back again someday. Don't look up. you may get a golden shower. 😆 The animals going across above you. But it is so cool. One of our AAP members won a trip to Africa. So she and two other friends went fully paid for by the Cheetah Conservation Fondation. Now that's a trip of a life time.
