First time turning Glossy Buckthorn. This is a root ball and had all manner of rocks, dirt and sand in it. Lots of digging around with a screwdriver to remove much of it and lots of sharpening of chisels due to the sand. I did have to use a carbide tool for some of the work but it was worth it. I was not disappointed! The piece turned out to have beautiful grain and color. Finished in shellac.

You ole Goat, don’t you know it’s us who are thankful for you. We get up every Thursday waiting with anticipation for the “Dr. Phil Show”. This video was no disappointment for I love the way you first examine the patient for best diagnosis then you proceed with the surgery keeping us informed all the way through. I loved the panoramic view(just briefly) of you standing at the lathe. You actually do have legs. You looked good at the operating table Doctor. I never heard of this wood but you sure have a keeper-just beautiful! Thanks and stay safe.

Buckthorn is an invader from across the see. Its from merry old England. Its called buckthorn because all the branch tips look like forked antlers. Its really hard to get rid of once it starts spreading in an area, and it grows like the dickens, as some say. Its very hardy and has an advantage over native trees, it stays green longer in the fall, and starts going early in the spring. Most people think its an ugly tree for some reason, probably because it sheds bark and makes a lot of branches. But inside, it is always full of color and crazy grain, sometimes amazingly so. I think it makes the best walking sticks, because of all the gnarly growths and wiggles. That was fun to watch and turned out awesome, Phil.

I am a one year turner totally enjoying learning about turning. I can't fathom not having you tube and a couple of turners including you to teach me the ins and outs of turning. I started out doing chain saw carving and then went into sign and wood art carvings, epoxy work but now spend a couple of hours a day watching you tube learning and practicing turning. It is incredible that a person can use a resource like You Tube and professional wood turners to fill my day and make retirement throughly enjoyable. Thanks Phil for your channel.

This is wonderful to read, Doyle! That is exactly how I learned to turn, too. I watched hundreds of hours of video interspersed with going to the shop to try what I had learned. It took awhile and I had tons of huge catches but, eventually, my learning took hold. 😊

Thank You Phil, Thank You Chris Brown from New York...Very interesting turning 2 say the least. Glossy Buckthorn is a mystery to me (U lucky dude, Phil). Quite the adventure you gave us Phil. Rocks, sand, more cavities than my last dental exam!!!! The inside has a nice face with a jutting jaw, Popeye grin & 2 eyes (or is it just me, ha).....TM

Yeah, there's a couple faces in there, Tuffy, not just you! I didn't see them at the time but just went and looked and sure enough! Also, I didn't notice the clear face on the outside before I turned it. You can see it in the thumbnail for this video. On the right hand side. Kind of looks like Flash Gordon or maybe a hood ornament from the 40's. Always something to see in these great, oddball pieces I'm sent by my very generous viewers! But, you know a little something about that, yourself! 😊

Looked like there was going to be trouble with that loose section but sure glad it hung in there because it really did make the piece. Hang on for a second I think I am going to get that root ball my son gave me and put it on the burn pile! LOL Ok I am back...and I left it there and one of these days I will turn it. I have turned pieces of it and they were as hard as a rock. Same Camelia you turned into a beautiful one winged bowl. Another great piece pulled out of the ground and made it to beauty my friend! Good idea to not “stand in line”. Was turning a HUGE piece of pine: as I moved to get a different tool, it flew majestically through the space I vacated. One of the best rules I learned from a good turner: “never chuck up a piece of wood you aren’t willing to eat”.

This is Sunday night and most people have a ritual of watching TV, Mine is to watch SHADY ACRES FARMS Videos ( Better known a the Phil Anderson Macic Show). As far as I am concerned you are the best Teacher of Woodturning today. You are not afraid to tackle even the hardest to turn projects and end up with marvelous results (as usual) I have learned SO much from your videos. When I watch you, I am also watching what tool you are , and why you are using it. Properly grounding the tool. finding the bevel before engaging the wood. Listening what the wood or tool is telling you. They DO talk to you. Just listen to it. I sure love to meet and talk to you some day. ❤ KEEP ON TURNING

Perhaps I missed it, but this is the first time we saw your shop in the background. Looks good. This stump was gnarly. I turn stump wood too. It has some of the best figure and features I've found. Nice work. I watch a lot of your videos. What do you do with your finished bowls? I sell some of mine on Ebay.

I am rewatching this video Phil. I am reminded of cutting some invasive buckthorn with a chainsaw at night and you wouldn't believe the spark show I got. If you are really daring, I'd venture you would get the same were you to turn it in the dark...

Spectacular work, my friend. I’ve been sitting in my local hospital for almost a week waiting for a surgery date when I realized that I could be watching some of my favourite turners using my iPhone and Bluetooth headphones. My bride brought my headphones and phone over and I just spent an enjoyable 31:25 watching you turn this gorgeous bowl. Thanks for sharing, buddy! You sure come through when you’re needed. Have a great weekend, my friend. Happy turning, …..Gord

Really nice, Phil! I KNEW you'd save that limb...and for me, it makes the piece. The bowl is pretty and very bold but then you see that limb...hanging on for dear life and it softens the bowl. The bowl says, "I'm not so bold, look what I'm holding onto by a 1/4 inch!" You amaze and you're also one of, if not the, nicest and most enjoyable turner on KZbin. You're definitely appreciated, my friend.
