This! THIS is why I send you odd chunks, Phil. You have taught me more about turning weird, whacky, odd shaped off-cuts than any other KZbin turner out there! Thank you for leaving the 'bridge'-- it's what holds the whole piece together and looks totally planned. Backstory: Backstory for this one is kinda skinny. A friend dropped off a very large slice of wood while I was out of town. A text message from him said it was a cherry root slab that had grown above ground at the base of a huge cherry tree, all of which had been taken to the mill. He'd been hired to remove what was left. It was a whole bark-on slab which you saw while you visited the old Portland shop before we moved. You gave me some much-needed-and-appreciated advice for parting it out. Here's the result of that. Gorgeous!

OMG I am in LOVE. as the daughter of a carpenter/ joiner ( he would have been 102 next month) and lived and worked to age 86. I was brought up with the feel and smell of wood. we were also brought up with knowledge of the growing trees, recognising them both in leaf and in winter also the properties of different wood. I am just in awe of your love of the piece you are working on and no wonder. This piece is simply beautiful xxx

Thank you, Dave! Phil, I think you have created a “signature” piece/style that you just may become well known for. If not, I’ll take all three! She was right, the bridge makes the piece. Remember the small “gave up on” piece? I started turning it and that is exactly the form it was taking. Did not get to finish it before my thumb gave out. Shall I send it over for you to put the final touch on it? And yes, the thumb is getting better.

I have another too-large chunk of this one, Valerie. I'll eventually part it in half before turning. If you want to give one a go, send me an email. I've got so much more wood than I'll EVER get to and I will not miss it. Just got a big leaf maple trunk and 2 European birch trunks parted out and am trying to find space for all the half rounds to season. Gorgeous wood!

In same situation here. And a windstorm just dropped even more wood about 10 days ago. Will happily take it if I can reciprocate. Now that we gave Phil so much wood, maybe we can both gift more wood to Oregon Old Timer. Have known him since he was younger and flying airplanes, so I dropped off some nice, dry blanks last trip down the coast. Not “Phil” wood, but good learning to turn wood. 😵💫😜

It would look great in this holder. I thought looking at the start of this you would be needing a lot of CA glue. It appeared there was cracks and deep crevices. The piece stayed together. I love this, Phil! This one is my favorite of the three. Thanks for the inspiration for a "corner" piece of wood that I might otherwise throw in the wood stove! I'm going to give one of these a try, one of these days. My favorite part of this video, though, was when you called your daughter to see what she thought you should do with it. My dad taught me to turn a couple of years ago, and we spend lots of time together in the wood shop, bantering back and forth, discussing what we think we should do with a piece! It's the best! Thanks for another great video...I always look forward to them.

First off, wonderful as always. Love the grain, and the bark, and the way the finish brings out the contrast between them. This one is my favourite of these. I agree you were right to leave the band of bark half way up. Now for a suggestion from a mathematiian with a visual brain. In order to work out where you want your centres, why not cut out several cardboard circles, say with half inch steps in diameter, with a small hole in the centre of each. Then stand the blank on end and try different circles positioned differently to visualise what will be turned away and what will be left natural depending where your centre is and how much you turn, and when you’re happy punch through or mark with a pencil to say “put the centre here”.
@aranka94352 жыл бұрын
What an excellent tip! Thanks
@valeriehenschel15902 жыл бұрын
My simple method is to pick the part or area I want to feature (keep), then move the center point toward that area until the area is shy of the outside cutting diameter (where the cutter will hit everyplace but there). Using circles does help those who do not visualize well in 3D.

I've said it before but every piece of wood has more than a better tilt at life after PHIL WORKS HIS MAGIC. This is the pick of the three in my opinion & undoubtedly it is 'held together' by the "bridge". I liked the shorter of the two 'wax' candles the best. This 'see how it develops' approach that you have, along with your unflappable commentary & sense of humour are a large part of the reason so many of us watch your channel. These attributes along with your undoubted skills on the lathe are the magnets that keep drawing us back time after time. Thank you for the joy you bring, at least to this old broken down guy. I am just stunned by the beauty of the set of 3. The brutal and aggressiveness you used to cut away the unnecessary was masterfully done. The 3 were as 1 never separate them. There is a life lesson here some where. ( 3 in 1…..beautiful from nothing ) anyway..good night Mr Anderson wherever you are

Stephanie was right, Phil. That cross piece makes it special. All beautifully crafted and finished and a joy to look at even if I can't touch them .....!!

We love it too Mr Phil. Quit teasing us-we wish we could touch it too! LoL. And please take care of your hands. I hate seeing boo boos. We care about your well being and happiness! Love Stephanie’s piece of Cherry, but I like the Japanese Maple still ! As always, be blessed and thank you for sharing- hope treatments are going well!❤

Your daughter was right. It looks great! I like it best of the three, though the first two are also beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talents and yourself.

I'm glad you left the small part. Gives it more character and class. As far as the candle, my favorite is the real wax where the top is even with the "left in" part. Beautiful piece.
