Better for him or for you? He seemed fairly sure in the last video where he announced the change that he was not improving enough and that this was the way forward.

This is a great explanation. I found it helpful to practice this against the highest level of stockfish on Lichess. Stockfish will make all the moves you are probably thinking about. You can then drill it, or lose it and check and see what you do if x, y or z happens.
@beri41384 жыл бұрын
Good idea. You should also enable tablebases. I have personally seen Stockfish at depth 28 draw some of these WINNING endgame positions, believe it or not! You really, really should enable tablebases which enable Stockfish to play a league or two above its normal endgame level.

@MordimersChessChannel5 жыл бұрын
Good way to start to understand chess - from the endgame. So the endgame technique could also be started with single pawns, then Philidor of course, then others. But good thing there are not so many to master. Then we add some pawns here and there and then the new way of thinking appears in our brain - how to reach known position. And it appears because we know that position, if we don't know these simple position we would just try to make "the best moves" - which usually doesn't work. Then we have more interesting complex positions near the endgame when we know if we are better/worse and we know what has to be played to simplify to - again - simple positions :D Masters in XVIII and XIX century gave us all the theoretical foundations, why not to use them to understand chess. Then middle game... then openings :)

I like endgame series. I'm confident I can hold my own in the middlegame and opening. Endgames are where I struggle.
@alvaro39mg305 жыл бұрын
Maybe you struggle at endgames because you messed up the middle game
@iMarc895 жыл бұрын
@@alvaro39mg30 Thanks for your concern over my middlegame play. Occasionally, yes, I might have a losing position with equal material and not recognise it. Rarely, though. I can usually tell if I'm dead lost. And obviously I'm not really playing the endgame if I'm down a rook or something and with no serious counterplay. Not in classical time formats, anyway. Maybe in rapid or blitz games where I'm way up on the clock, but that's different. If I'm down a rook and we enter the endgame, I'll usually resign as soon as I see that my opponent knows how to convert it. What I'm talking about is endgames where I'm up a pawn and we both have a pair of rooks, or a queen against two rooks with an equal number of pawns. Or queen and pawn endings where I start with the advantage. And more importantly, I would find tips useful on how to draw positions instead of losing them where it's possible. I knew Philidor's defence before this video and enjoyed the refresher nonetheless. Likewise I can draw king and pawn vs king from any position it's possible to do so. I'm not struggling in every endgames, but endgames ARE hard, and one mistake or one missed threat can often be there difference between a win and a draw, or a draw and a loss. Believe me when I say my rating would be at least a couple of dozen points higher if my endgame play was better. And ultimately, yes, my middlegame and opening could use some work. Everyone can improve everything. But my biggest concern with my game at the moment is losing games I should be drawing and occasionally drawing games I should win.

Henry Chess Patience my boy, he will get there in time. Start simple. Build on that.
@kochevar995 жыл бұрын
Silman’s endgame course book is handy, but almost all of the chapters are with very few pawns on the board. You have to master the basics, as they are theoretical. All endgames with like 4(?) pieces are solved. Any more and it gets infinitely more complicated. However, Silman does talk about them, but it is in the section for 2200+ players. But like he mentioned in the video, getting back to a known position is handy, as you can plan how to play an endgame with seven pawns knowing where you need to end up to get an endgame like this one (or the Lucena position).
