This was a big hit during my high school days in the States in the 1970s - heard it on the radio often. Also check out "No, 9 Dream" from this album. It's very different from "Whatever...", but really good too.

John wrote this song and needed harmony. Who better than one of his closest friends, Elton John. Another great collab is John's guitar and backing vocal on the David Bowie classic "Fame".

Great to see your reaction to this song! This was a number one hit for John Lennon in his solo career in collaboration with Elton John. As a result of a bet Elton made with John Lennon on how the song would chart, because the song went to #1 John had to appear on stage with Elton at New York's Madison Square Garden which, in historic fashion Elton was indeed able to introduce John Lennon on stage as they broke into "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" live.

You always manage to get something insightful out of the lyrics in your analysis. Here, speaking of different things in different (and sometimes difficult) situations I find quite insightful, and it just rings true to me.
