I’m 78 years old and I have been listening to this song since my college days in 1963. At that time some commented that the lyrics from the 22 year (?) old Dylan seemed timeless. Here you are in 2023 with your thoughtful reaction which seems to justify those “timeless” comments from decades ago. I enjoy your channel.

We've yet to heed to warning, although the warning here is quite evident. One of my all time favorite Dylan songs (they're all my all time favorites lol).

This is in my top 5 songs from Dylan. It’s hard to beat his genius. I think my favorite song from Dylan is “It’s alright Ma”. If you haven’t checked it out… put on your seatbelt. It’s a ride. His music can change you as a person.

I used to think that Bob Dylan didn’t have much of a singing voice, and that he should stick to songwriting, lol. But then I heard him sing this song, and for whatever reason his voice just really meshed with the melody and lyrics and I changed my mind. 👍👍

Amazing to think he wrote this when he was just 21! I first heard it when I was 14, more than 50 years ago, and it still hits hard. (By the way, do you know Fritz Baffour? He was my singing partner many many years ago.)

I noticed you didn't attempt an interpretation of the lyrics! Probably a wise move... IIRC, this was written in his early twenties in a period when the music and lyrics were just flowing through him, and he was just typing them madly (on his little portable manual typewriter!) just trying to keep up... He said he didn't know where they came from. Later in life, he was still writing songs, but has said it takes much more hard work! Different things tend to jump out for me and they take me in different ways, each time I hear some Dylan songs; this time I especially noticed the line about the man who was wounded in love, and then the man who was wounded in hatred. A theme, still, for today, with politics in the US and globally often so bitterly divided with such terribly wounding effects, for all concerned.. And this time for some reason I laughed because he included in the long list of things he's going to do - having seen, heard, etc all this crazy stuff going on in the world - that he'll be sure and 'know my song well, before I start singing"... Seems like a good plan for a performer... and on another level, maybe, it's suggesting that with all the complexities and ambiguities of life, you'd better be damned sure you understand your subject thoroughly, before you start spouting off to the world your miniscule bit of wisdom on the issue! Anyway, just my two cents' worth for today, on a giant of an artist. He's one of those special few I'm just glad to have had the good luck to have been living here on Planet Earth at the same time as they were.

Oh, ¿dónde has estado, mi hijo de ojos azules? Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son ¿Y dónde has estado, mi querido joven? And where have you been, my darling young one Me he topado con la ladera de doce montañas brumosas I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains He caminado y me he arrastrado por seis caminos torcidos I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways He pisado en medio de siete bosques tristes I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests He estado frente a una docena de océanos muertos I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans He estado diez mil millas en la boca de un cementerio I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard Y es difícil, y es difícil, es difícil, y es difícil And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard Es una lluvia fuerte que va a caer It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall Ay, ¿qué viste, hijo mío de ojos azules? Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son ¿Y qué viste, mi joven querido? And what did you see, my darling young one Vi un bebé recién nacido con lobos salvajes a su alrededor. I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it Vi una carretera de diamantes sin nadie en ella. I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it Vi una rama negra con sangre que seguía goteando I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin' Vi una habitación llena de hombres con sus martillos sangrando I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin' Vi una escalera blanca toda cubierta de agua. I saw a white ladder all covered with water Vi diez mil hablantes cuyas lenguas estaban todas rotas I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken Vi pistolas y espadas afiladas en manos de niños pequeños. I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children Y es difícil, y es difícil, es difícil, es difícil And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard Es una lluvia fuerte que va a caer It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall ¿Y qué escuchaste, hijo mío de ojos azules? And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son? ¿Y qué escuchaste, mi querido joven? And what did you hear, my darling young one? Escuché el sonido de un trueno que rugió como advertencia I heard the sound of a thunder that roared out a warnin' Escuché el rugido de una ola que podría ahogar al mundo entero. Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world Escuché a cien bateristas cuyas manos estaban en llamas Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin' Escuché diez mil susurros y nadie escucha Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin' Escuché a una persona morir de hambre, escuché a mucha gente reírse Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin' Escuché la canción de un poeta que murió en la cuneta. Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter Escuché el sonido de un payaso que lloraba en el callejón. Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley Y es difícil, y es difícil, es difícil, es difícil And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard Es una lluvia fuerte que va a caer It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall Oh, ¿qué conociste, mi hijo de ojos azules? Oh, what did you meet, my blue-eyed son? ¿A quién conociste, mi querido joven? Who did you meet, my darling young one? Conocí a un niño pequeño al lado de un pony muerto. I met a young child beside a dead pony Conocí a un hombre blanco que paseaba a un perro negro. I met a white man who walked a black dog Conocí a una joven cuyo cuerpo ardía I met a young woman whose body was burning Conocí a una joven, ella me regaló un arcoiris. I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow Conocí a un hombre que estaba herido en el amor. I met one man who was wounded in love Conocí a otro hombre que estaba herido de odio. I met another man who was wounded with hatred Y es difícil, es difícil, es difícil, es difícil And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard Es una lluvia fuerte que va a caer It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall ¿Y qué harás ahora, hijo mío de ojos azules? And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son? ¿Y qué harás ahora, mi querido joven? And what'll you do now, my darling young one? Voy a volver a salir antes de que empiece a llover I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin' Caminaré hasta lo más profundo del bosque negro más profundo I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest Donde la gente es mucha y sus manos están todas vacías Where the people are many and their hands are all empty Donde los perdigones de veneno inundan sus aguas Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters Donde el hogar en el valle se encuentra con la prisión sucia y húmeda Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison Y el rostro del verdugo siempre está bien escondido. And the executioner's face is always well hidden Donde el hambre es fea, donde las almas son olvidadas Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten Donde el negro es el color, donde ninguno es el número Where black is the color, where none is the number Y lo diré, lo pensaré, lo hablaré y lo respiraré. And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it Y reflejarlo desde la montaña para que todas las almas puedan verlo. And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it Entonces estaré en el océano hasta que empiece a hundirme Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin' Pero conoceré bien mi canción antes de empezar a cantar. But I'll know my song well before I start singin' Y es difícil, es difícil, es difícil, es difícil And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard Es una lluvia fuerte que va a caer It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall
