The amount of crime that went on that site makes the sentence rather fair. Plus no plea deal. Though I wonder how he coped with running such a website, did he keep his conscious since it’s just over the internet and not real?

I also party think how harsh the punishment feels but at the same time, his site was used by other nefarious groups/person to distribute drugs which destroy lives. He happens to be the head, CEO, creator - the kingpin. Examples needed to be made. Seems like an ok guy especially how he spent time in prison. But still, he's a huge enabler of crimes/addictions just simply from creating the site.

Thanks again for the well done documentation. I recently read the book 'Empire of Pain' regarding the Sackler family and the opium epidemic in America. He didn't do what the Sacklers did, but got a mind bending sentence. I am all for personal surveillance and proclivities, if you are not hurting someone then go for it. Hard for me to take in the fact that an epidemic thoughtfully brought on by drug companies are still not brought to justice.

They are 1 billions times more responsible for addiction than this man. Most people who bought drugs there, used them responsibly. When I was at the worst of my addiction, there is no way I would go through the trouble of learning multiple programs and hiding bitcoin transactions, only to hopefully get drugs in the mail within the week. @@ThomasxBlack I whole heartedly doubt it, you gotta pick your battles, and he chose to die on that hill for nothing. All it was, was his overinflated ego and poor decisions he had made that screwed his life. He could have walked out and stayed out of the spotlight and done a better push to improve the libertarian movement.

really respect the inclusion of his political beliefs and how that motivated his creation of the silk road - it wasn’t really a kingpin who founded this, it was an idealist, one who got too wrapped up in the excitement of gaining real power and influence. excellent work as always phil!

Man, the shutdown of Silkroad caused such a mess similar to the war on drugs. Scamsites and scamvendors were proliferating and I as a simple law student got implicated in an local police/Europol case concerning a person active on such a marketplace who happened to have my number in his contacts. Suffice to say the whole thing was waaay overblown and I got off without charges (duh) but it tells me how badly law enforcement was handling this shit.

I would be willing to "forgive" Ross, or at least not judge him too harshly were it not for the hits. Sure, his hits didn't kill anyone....but he believed they did. He tried roleplaying a mafioso boss, ordering hits like in the movies, and to him this fantasy was a reality. If I stabbed you in the face with intent to kill, and you survived, I am still guilty of murder by proxy of being willing to go through with it. It does not matter whether the murders actually happened, what is important is the intent. Ross deserves most of the sentence he got. That being said there are worse criminals than him that get of lighter.

@@robrick9361 bro, that doesn’t make any better, he still hired hit man to kill people. That’s not morality, that’s his ego, he was upset that they took from his criminal enterprise. The criminal enterprise that ruined thousands of lives. His attempt to murder them was way out of proportion to what they did. Idk why people like you romanticize this guy, he’s no different than any other gang leader. He still tried kill people, he allowed illegal firearms to be sold on the site, he allowed illegal and dangerous drugs to be on the site, he allowed hitmen to be on the site. This guy wasn’t good, hes an egotistical greedy scumbag and y’all fell for his nonsense.
