This is a semi-review of the Sigma fp. One of the most interesting and perplexing cameras to come out in years. I say semi-review as compared to my usual reviews this is pretty short and I don't go into everything that it does. This is much more focused on the pros and cons of the camera. Make sure you watch till the end as the final edit of the cinema DNG footage is utterly gorgeous. This camera is capable of one hell of a great image!

I find that SlimRAW is excellent for saving space in post with the DNG files. I shoot 12-bit and always offload as 10-bit log with SlimRAW. This produces lossless compressed files that are usually less than 1/3 of the original size and it is blazing fast, it takes the same time as straight copy from the SSD. And I know others compress to 5:1 lossy or even smaller on offload, which lowers footprint further. Due to the RED patent issues I am fairly certain we are not getting compressed DNG in the future, but an improvement Sigma can easily make is to provide 10-bit uncompressed log footage instead or in addition to the 12-bit linear. This will shave 1/6 of the SSD storage space without any noticeable quality loss. I recall both Canon and Panasonic do this with their raw capable cameras.

I would really appreciate a video by a top class, like Phillip Bloom, to shot some kind of an ultimate video on best cameras that are not dealing well with autofocus. What are benefits of using these. And a gear for those. There are tons of people that don't know a thing about manual focusing, manual focus lens, advantages in price and control of frame that comes with manual focus. Because all they do, is watching vloggers talking about cameras. And a vlogger starts any camera review with autofocus...and then throws out a 7000$ g-master autofocus lens, and is still incapable of using it the way it should be used. The point of the video for all the boys and girls that like filming anything to be: -teach us basics of manual (many people don't now does manual focus works based on left/right position, or based on distance); -encourage people to at least try using manual; -explanation, that people don't need a full frame if they don't have a money for one; -a person with non full frame camera is not retarded or defected in any way. A bunch of motion pictures are recorded with super 35mm, that vloggers are calling "croped lens", and people that are doing this for a long time, like Mr.Bloom, are calling it super 35 or APS-c. That is the difference between a master and a vlogger yelling WHAT'S UUUUP at the start of every video. Unfortunately, many talented people with cameras, think that Philip Bloom is same what Peter McAnything is. -what are we getting in price and image quality by taking lenses without manual focus and what are a good options to combine with cameras such as Blackmagic4k/6k, Fuji x-t3/4, Panasonic GH5; - few words on cameras that are dealing with poor autofocus, and what they are giving us as a compensation; ... Don't want this channel to become a start up guide for someone that will use camera for a week and throw it away when it gets bored. But, I just think that words that come out out of someone that has been on SKY and dedicated a life to this craft, and went to every corner of the planet with a camera, would have a greater impact on talented people.

I currently use a BMPCC 4k, which is great and I don't want to compromise on the 12bit RAW. But even the slow autofocus of Sigma FP is surely better than the 4k that doesn't have continuous autofocus at all. Add in the smaller size, larger sensor, and the amazing warm colours the fp seems to chuck out and I'm feeling pretty tempted to add the fp to my arsenal. Does anyone have any views. Many seem to think the 4k makes the fp redundant, but is there a merit to having both?

Low light similar to Sony a7s3 (but better colour science at night). Colour science is beautiful similar to Fuji XT3. And price, wow, half of Sony a7s3. If you are an inspired cinematographer this is the camera for you. I was able to fit my Nikon and Sony A-mount lenses to my Sigma FP using a special adaptors (less $50 each): Imagine Sony Zeiss 135mm F1.8 A-mount lens on Sigma FP, gorgeously beautiful creamy bokeh beyond imagination. I was able to get cheap SSD (less than $100) to work with it. AND I was able get unlimited external power source to attached to it via a dummy battery (less than $40). It has a director's view for Arri and RED cameras. What more do you want for a pocket-sized cinema camera with less than $2k price tag? If this is not the camera, then I don't think there will be a cinema camera at this price point in any foreseeable future, Philip.
@philipbloom
@philipbloom 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t get your reply. I was very positive about a lot of the camera but pointed out that I am 100% certain they will fix in a mk ii. You talk about it being a pocket camera but you are adding all that stuff onto it! Is it really a “pocket camera” and does being a “pocket camera” really matter. You clearly aren’t using it out the box where it is small. So that point makes no sense. It needs an EVF. It needs a tilting screen. Great it records to huge cdng. Quality is great. File sizes are horrendous. So you don’t agree with me that the internal recording isn’t good enough? How is that even possible to disagree with? It’s not. Great you have wonderful manual focus with 3rd party lenses. How is that any different to other mirrorless cameras? £2000 isn’t that cheap. If you look at the new Blackmagic pocket cinema 6K pro that is a superior camera for £500 more. The sigma sits in an awkward spot. It’s small but you can’t really use it like that so you need to build it up but being a small base makes it harder. Anyway I said it all in the video. Don’t be defensive about the camera. It’s my opinion and this is based on everything that’s out there. This is a first generation model and it shows what needs to be done. sigma’s CEO messaged me to thank me for the detailed feedback as it was very useful for them. You can work round some of it limitations but wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t have to?

@@philipbloom Philip, thanks for your opinion but you need to respect mine as well. Remember, this is a full frame pocket cinema. Firmware is now at 2.03. Sigma and fujifilm are known to continue to improve their same camera overtime. That is very responsible and honorable thing. This is what customers' need. That is being respectable and loyal to their customer; the ancient Japanese's way. I don't see that in Sony and I own several of them (a7r3, a6100 and fs700r). Sony has lost their Japanese traditional values; they have not earn my respect (except for their fs700r which they did honour and follow through). When Japanese CEO emailed you, it is out of respect. It is something honourable men do even when they disagree with you. This characteristic so rare now a day. Sorry, for side tracking... For a photographer I always thought the FP should go 'boutique' on this and give us a full-frame Pentax Q. Video specs that match Philip's requests, small EVF accessory, on body hot shoe for flash, and contacts for proprietary lenses with built-in leaf shutter. It's a pity flange distance does not provide too much hope of a lens adapter with aperture ring / leaf shutter built-in for any lens make, esp, Leica M. I'd pay £600 for the latter accessory to avoid red dot snobbery and the masking of such with black tape.

Having said that I just sent sigma an email literally seconds before I saw your video (funny that) asking sigma to introduce a compressed raw, so I echo your call. Also would like to find a easier way to listen to sound whilst recording. That’s a pain. However I find the internal mics are some of the best I have ever come across but outside the wind makes it very hit and miss. Inside or in calm conditions the internal mics are really surprising. Also agree on AF but I just go manual and forget about but it would be good to have better face detection. Overall I really like the camera and it’s versatility. Good on gibs too. Keep the pressure on Sigma, I believe they will respond either wise they are wasting their time, imo. Thanks.

I had that camera for a week to test it for photography. I love the imagequality but i wish it would be about 40 MP not 24. What i missed was a EVF, a tilt display and a bigger grip with a bigger battery. Although it do not eat batteries like my Merrills, it would be good to have a bigger one in a needed grip. I did not like the attachable Viefinder. It turns the camera into a telescope and does not help shooting at low positions or over head in a crowd… I do not care about the not perfect AF. I would not need it for my kind of photography. There is a rumored FP-L. I hope it has the wanted features plus an IBIS and a mechanical shutter to avoid banding at flourescend light.

The Sigma LVF comes with a new baseplate, identical to the body, the thing you attach the LVF to with the two Allen screws. It's a one time thing. The baseplate with LVF attaches to the FP body with a single large tripod style screw. When you want to remove the LVF you just unscrew the one large screw. same when you want to reattach it. I put the Allen key away and have never needed to use it more than once.

You can't use on professionals set it because the ergonomics is a nightmare but the image quality is unbeatable even for much much more expensive cameras. Not quite the smallest full frame mirrorless. I just bought the Sony RX1 & converted to full spectrum (which might interest you). It have very good IR perforance btw. The RX1 is smaller and lighter than the Sigma with its smallest lens, which is also a stop slower and nowhere near as sharp. Of course the RX1 video is pretty lame by comparison. The RX1R II has a built-in viewfinder but don't be tempted to convert that to IR.

So can someone explain to me how the rolling shutter has impact on the micro jitters?
@TacticalCactusMedia
@TacticalCactusMedia 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of people hear the term rolling shutter and think of all the YT reviews where the camera is whipped back and forth horizontally. This is done in order to see if the lines in their shot stay straight. If they warp and appear curved, this is an indication of rolling shutter. However, rolling shutter is not exclusive to side-to-side movement, it also occurs during quick vertical movements, which our hands do naturally to varying degrees (at a small scale), hence the phrase micro jitters. How bad the rolling shutter is on a camera depends upon the speed in which each frame is scanned and captured by the sensor. If you've ever heard of global shutter, that means a camera is capturing the entire frame all at once. A rolling shutter camera doesn't do this, as it scans the frame from top to bottom instead of all at once, which unfortunately can produce visual artifacting. This is where I find a lot of misinformation on the FP, with so many reviewers claiming that it features the same sensor as the Sony A7iii. Having owned both cameras, I have extensively tested this exact feature. On the A7iii, rolling shutter is a rather significant issue. On the FP, not nearly as much. This has led to my belief that these two cameras do not share the same sensor, although it really is speculation since the details of Sigma's sensor have not been made public (at least that I'm aware of). Hopefully this helped!

It doesn't have a future. What has kept them afloat (as opposed to their dedicated stills camera lines which have dropped like a lead balloon) are that until recently the big boys hadn't really made "semi-professional" video cameras that bridge into the cinema camera territory. This segment has been worth it because of the lack of competition to the niche user base that want a "proper" cinema camera but at a lower budget than an entry level "real professional" cinema camera like the Red Komodo, Sony FX6 or equivalent (i.e. smaller "new media" - i.e. social media - entities and independents/contractors). But Sigma won't be able to compete now that established players have caught the scent of blood and have entered the same segment. With the likes of the sony FX3 and FX30 entering the same market segment, Sigma can't really keep this part of the business profitable whilst staying competitive on technology. You also have video camera getting so good that they can pretty compete directly with Sigma's "Cinema Cameras" without specifically being cinema cameras - a la Sony A7S, Canon 80d, Nikodn D750 etc. The reality is that cameras have become a small niche Sigma makes a little bit of extra money on the side rather than a key contributor to their bottom line. Sigma makes much better revenue and profit margins through their lens sales. If the business rationale for their cinema cameras disappears because the market leads invade their niche, they are much more likely to take the hit and redouble focus on their more profitable businesses rather than sink more good money after bad money trying to stay competitive on cinema cameras.

Well I think your idea for this camera is that you're expecting too much from this camera which is not supposed to do all those things. I find your review very conservative you are expecting it to perform like old cameras while the industry has changed a lot. Even if it doesn't have the image stabilization, you can always hop on this camera on Stabilizers. Or Shoot like Pros... I know there are some flaws in this camera but it's a bloody beast you can do so much if you know how to use it correctly.
