Glad you put this on youtube. This realy is an excellent comparison. Since I saw this last on Vimeo, I've seen some interesting results of people grading the highlight curve with a new shoulder on the FS100 and it gives the picture a more "F3" appearance as apparently there is some data remaining in the highlights in areas that look to be clipped. Its hidden in a post somewhere on dvxuser, cant seem to find it right now

Hi Philip, here r my own rankings (best to worst): F3 - Superb color reproduction, sharp details on shadow (low light) areas, bright areas are not overly flooded - meaning the sensor is powerful. However, the price of this makes it unfair to test against the rest. AF-100 than FS-100 - SDI/HDSDI output are largest plus point of this 5k-grand camera. Built-in ND filters and perfect 60p capture also help make it score above FS-100. Mk2 - Crush black, unreal colors. DSLR are not meant for videos.

Man, the world before the speedbooster, funnily enough im cross shopping an f3 vs an f5 currently as they're bloody cheap, and just as amazing as always.

I've been making my own films for a year now and I am about to decide whether to make a 30 minute short or buy some decent kit and just go out there and get jobs done. I had to go through some much rubbish written by camera nuts, but your no nonsense approach has taught me loads and informed me greatly. I wish you did lighting kit too.

@JoshuaBeeLoved well you are entitled to your opinion but not sure what you saw in the 5DmkII that was better in those shots that the others...and this is coming from a 5D lover!

@philipbloom I agree with Joshua. The reason I like the Canon more, is because the other camera's all have these fluo blue/cyan edges and fields. It seems as if the camera tries to create a beautifull blue sky in the highlights. As if the camera figures that clipped highlights are 'probably' sky. The Canon doesn't do that or way less. This makes (at least for me) the image of the Canon way more natural. What do you think? Thx in advance for your reply!

I own a 5D Mark II, but the F3 won hands down in the low light cigar test. Very impressive. Only one question Philip, did the fact that you were using a $3900 prime on the F3 vs the L lens worth half the cost on the 5D make a difference? Would the results been closer if the 5D likewise had the same cinema lens?
@onjofilms13 жыл бұрын
Overall the F3 looks pretty impressive, the 5D on the brick wall shot seemed to have the most noise, or grain. On a side note for operation, I had a chance to shoot with a 60D last week (normally I shoot with my 7D) and I loved the flip out viewer. I wish the 7D had that for low or high shots. If you don't have a separate monitor, this flip out option is way cool. Thanks for the tests Philip.

This is a great test, just what I'd want to see... though ideally, the test shots should all be done simultaneously. Do you have the raw SD card files uploaded anywhere?
@JoshuaBeeLoved13 жыл бұрын
@philipbloom I think it may be just because I'm so used to using the 5D and knowing it's capabilities, as well as the quality and affordability of it. I think that if one were to make a video using all of these cameras and not tell anyone which is which, and record in the highest possible quality all around, it would be very hard for alot of people to notice the difference between them to the naked eye! They're all great cameras though!!!
@MattSezer11 жыл бұрын
For setups like this, using external ND filters is fine. However, for documentary and event shooting, it's nice to be able to change ND filters with the simple flip of a switch.
@pstchaseki13 жыл бұрын
In terms of price point, not sure I'd included the F3. The AF100 & FS100 are 2x the price of a 5D. Along with cinestyle and as long as one doesn't mind & able to do post c.c. (via Davinci resolve), the 5D tops them both in terms of value.
@weerock13 жыл бұрын
A question Philip, how do you fare the low-light quality between AF-100 & FS-100? which has less noise and a truer black? Hope for your response soon :)

Philip, what's your opinion on the NEX-EA50 in comparison with the FS100. Technically I mean. There is a fairly substantial price difference, however they appear technically very similar, apart from aesthetics?
@kolajampe12 жыл бұрын
Great comparison! Id love to be able to afford one of these beauties but for now im just starting out with my beloved 600D) with Olympus Zuiko primes. Although this camera is cheap as chips still has a lovely big sensor. The only frustration with DSLRs is finding a way to shoot comfortably handheld that doesn't require extortionately priced rigs.

I don't know a lot about these cameras but I am going to choose the FS 1 for my horror redemption film, I just felt it would give me the cinematic look and overall good quality. I thank you for the explanation on the camera and the breakdowns. As I have been trying to get all the reason why I should get the FS 1,

+Philip Bloom Hey, I know you posted this comparison long time ago, but in your videos appears 25MB/s and 35MB/s but sounds like you talked about Megabits instead of MegaBytes, which are 8 times more. Could you clarify this for me and is that a good amount of information compared to other CinAlta cameras Top of the Line from Sony?

When you say "use pulldown to remove it" in terms of shooting 60i and getting 24p, do you have anything on doing that process in premiere? Thanks.

I have a 7D and really love it, I eventually (by the end of the year) want to add the 5D to my arsenal. I got to use the AG-AF100 and was very impressed with it. Ugly looking camera, a tad bit sharper then it needs to be but it really had a lot going for it. Plus since it can use lenses that I already have for my canon DSLR's it cuts down on the price a bit. Waiting for Zacuto's Great Camera Shootout 2011 for final decisions

Philip Bloom well, that might have been a little strong, but KZbin really doesn't do these cameras justice, especially after having seen the same videos at B&H on their monitor displays, also, I'm not sure if this is just on my device but it would only play in 720p. By the way Phillip I've followed your content since I first got into filmmaking and I gotta say, you're the best. You make the greatest camera reviews out there, thanks for all the great info!
@andinbriwel10927 жыл бұрын
Philip Bloom Yes, the max quality allowed to select is 720P, and even if it were, "full HD," at 1080, YT applies its own compression to the stream based on the download speed. You can see differences between the different cameras, but what we see from YT is not what came out of the camera (or, rather, what came out of your editor's rendering algorithm), unless you download the full-res files.

@superwolf9511 жыл бұрын
just asking, you're always complaining about the lack of an ND filter on cameras in bright situation but... can't you just put an external nd filter on the lens? i mean you've an external monitor wich is connected to an external recorder both connected to the camera and you're complaining about an nd filter? don't blame me but in photography there are only external filter and nobody never died
@TVperson113 жыл бұрын
The F3 looks to be the best, it's sharpest and it's got the best ergonomics, but for the price, you're only really getting a slightly sharper image and 4:4:4 output. The FS100 looks a tiny bit sharper than the AF100, but it's about $1500 more. I can't say I see the point of the 5D, it's not very sharp and it's really not designed for video, the skewing is very bad on this camera, but I suppose it's a cheap means of getting DOF.

If you have an untrained eye and were just looking for the nicest picture it seems the AF100 would win. I would say the FS100 wins but there's that glow in blue, and purple colored objects. 5D2, like all other Canon cameras, have a pastel look in video. And the color, in general, isn't as rich as all the others. OK Canon users start throwing those tomatoes. ----- BTW, thanks for this comparison!!
