I have to go with #2, because I prefer the cleaner articulation of notes. I think that it would cut through better in a mix. Both are good, but do slightly different things. To be honest, a blend of both of them would be perfect.
@Space_pulse Жыл бұрын
I feel that. I preferred the tone control and clarity of #2 at times. Seems like the EQ is really nice, and great to have if your amp doesn’t have a lot of tone control, especially. It does not break up like #1, though. The overdrive on number one sounds way better. There’s some really nasty, unmusical distortion when you push #2 with a hot input. I mean, not terrible, but very different from the first pedal. But that doesn’t matter to some players.

Awesome Video. Really Confirmed my thoughts on the B15 tone from the SGT-DI pedal. Video idea: Can you do a comparison of the Bassrig 64 / Bassrig Super Vintage / SGT-DI SVT / SGT-DI B15 - same riff - just leveling with weaving in between with music and just bass like this video? I think these would get some use and be a fun way to acquire folks to your channel. But keep it going as you add more and more stuff in the preamp category of things.

Yes, I also use the Tech21 VT Bass (in my case in the Bass Fly Rig 1) at the moment. I never played the Origin so far, but guess this could be the first pedal that would be a real competitor to the VT Bass and maybe make me replace my Tech21 gear that I use for so many years. The Origin Pedals sound so much more amp like compared to all the other stuff out there.

From just listening, as you said, both sound different but really good, but where #1 really stood out, was the edge of break up and driven sound, way more natural and warm and pleasing sounding, than #2. For the SVT thing the Origin is the clear winner for me… The B15 on the Ampeg sounds really awesome though… 💫 Cheers from Hamburg👋🏼😀

The B15 and added features sell me on the SGT. The OE is a one trick pony though a very good one. But not for what you get for the money compared to the SGT. I already have an SVT Classic and I have the advantage of picking my own back line rigs on tour so can get the original SVT if I want it. The B15 is a bit harder to find on the road so nice to have such a perfect replica in the pedal.

Thanks so much for this comparison, which I wished for. With the third "aggressive" sound, it was absolutely clear what Origin and what Ampeg is. The Origin pedals just sound so much like "real" amps, while the Ampeg's distorted sound (scrambler) is simply mixed into it. The black Origin (Fender type) is certainly a competitor for a B-15-like sound. And I'm sure that the Origin would probably win there too.

For me there's one important feature the bass rig has and the sgt doesn't: that's the blend control. Especially with overdriven sounds I really want to have some clean signal in the mix for punch and definition. This gets even more important as the sgt's overdrive sounds way warmer and creamier and doesn't cut through in the mix as well imo. It'also uses digital modelling, which has much more potential for getting into runtime/phase cancelling issues if you try to mix it with a clean d.i. signal, I suspect. I had these problems with my HX-Stomp trying to mix an SVT with IR with a dry, unprocessed signal path. Can really be a pain in the ass, I think.

I bought the Ampeg about a month after it came out. I run a Markbass 12” combo with the 12” extension. Out of all the preamp pedals I’ve ran, I haven’t found one that sounds better than just running into the MB rig. The Ampeg was a game changer. I like how I can dial slight grit into m sound now. And it sounds legit. I have not tried the origin effects. I’ll be honest when you were doing the blind test I was hoping #1 was the Ampeg. 😂

Great comparison. Interesting - very little price difference between the two on this side of the pond. I also preferrred the #1 Origin sound, and you could see from the scope that it was fuller throughout the range while the Ampeg had an uppermid scoop , biting upper frequencies and seemed a little fizzy in the upper frequencies. Still, the eq can probably tame that. Everything Origin build is market leading in terms of quality, but that Ampeg just does sooooo much and the option of running it as a practice unit with headphones is significant for me too. Tough call. I think someone like me who has very little gear will go Ampeg, while a player who a ready has a lot of the Ampeg’s functionality will go for Bassrig. Ie it’s only about the finer points of the sound if you have the other bases (basses?) covered.

In the first, "Clean and Warm" round (and, yes, I've paused in the middle), I preferred #1 -- seemed more even and the notes seemed to have better support through the register. The overall vibe, though, I thought was pretty similar. In the second and third rounds, with varying degrees of breakup, I thought they were pretty different. In the second round, I thought #2 brought out the pick attack a lot better in the mix -- you might or might not want this -- though #1 was still a little more full and even sounding. Still, my immediate instinct was to go for #2. In the third round, I'd go with #1 again, because I felt the lows were a little better supported as you went down the E-string. That could be my (very modest) monitors, though, or the way I'm listening. In the soloed clips (appreciate their inclusion, btw) the character of the breakup in the top of the range was more buzzy (for me, in a not entirely pleasant way) with #2. I wonder if #1 might be set to get a similar degree of breakup and attack as #2, while keeping the evenness and fullness I liked (and wonder if #2 could be set to get a little less buzz up top and some of the more full, even quality I heard with #1). You probably made efforts that way, already, though, and I haven't played either of these. Note envelope struck me as a little rounder with #1, FWIW (which is another thing one might or might not prefer, depending on context). I think I'll come back and give this a more thorough listen, with decent headphones, but if I had to pick one right now, it'd be #1. Now to listen to the rest of the video... EDIT (after finishing video): 1) Noted, on the flat/noon EQ on each, for the test. 2) As recorded here, the Ampeg pedal does sound pretty close to your actual B-15! I wonder how that'd hold with more aggressive settings of the B-15.

I totally agree with your summation. I bought the SGT for the B15 sound and was just hoping for a good SVT as a bonus. It does a pretty good job, but the Origin SV sounds fatter and punchier. It does the aggressive tones way better. So here's my question, can you tone match the SGT to the SV or vice versa? I'd like to know if they're capable of producing the same sounds and how much compensation is needed on the tone control. Maybe even another video now that we're 8 or 9 months out?

Haha I called it. #1 was clearly trying to be the most SVT in each sample. Makes sense - it’s what most people think of as a bass amp sound, it’s what the market its. It does it very well. But also that’s how I knew it wouldn’t be the ampeg lol. I don’t know if it’s to protect the sales/mythology of the full SVT head, or what it is, but ampeg’s transistor stuff just never sounds like an SVT compared to the competition.

I felt like both sounded good but in different ways. The first one was really consistent and sounded like it was a finished track on a record. The second one I felt like you could hear more of the nuances and dynamics of the playing come through. The biggest difference to me is in the upper mids, plus the first one sounded like there was a compressor on. They are likely voiced slightly differently, but I'm guessing that you could get them to sound the same if you played with the EQ a little bit.
