I am apart of my local police explorers and they taught us the right and wrong way to pat someone down. A pen is a part of our uniforms for many reasons, one of them being to check the waste band and pockets of a suspect in case there is some thing like a knife or a syringe in there, it is completely unnecessary and pretty inappropriate to use you finger, and to stick it so far down into this young boys waste band. You are also not supposed to slide you hand, you are suppose to pat, that is why it is call a pat down. (but using the back of the hand on his butt was the only right thing he did)

I work at the TSA and I've got to say that shit was unnecessarily thorough. Also, in Sweden, were I work, you're not allowed to touch anyones genitals or the butt, even with the back of your hands. If the kid was hiding something there the metal alarm would indicate that and the TSA could use the handmetaldetector to verify the source. That grouping was not the right way to handle a random check. Like we TSA workers don't get enough shit already. Use fucking common sense, it's just a kid. Do your job but use your head as well.

I kinda agree with you, Rak. I mean, I completely agree that men are and can be objectified as well, but I'm not sure about the sexism part of it. Sexism and objectification are two different things. Just because you have one doesn't mean the other is present as well. With that in mind and based solely upon what is seen in this video, both the women and the man in the video were objectified, but none of them faced sexism. In the wider world, I agree that sexism and objectification against any gender is wrong, but that women are more often the targets of both and that objectification of men is seen as more socially acceptable than the reverse due to our culture.

But yes, they can do everything in their power to make sure you are not concealing something around an area that humans typically do, for obvious reasons. hi, I'm an actual TSA agent at ft.lauderdale ,and I can shed some light on this. see, I had to do a pat down on a kid once. it was a regular every kind of day, when this kids mom asked if her child could forgo the standard pat down,much like the mother in this story. she didn't feel comfortable with her child being searched and didn't see the need for it, but unfortunately we have rules to follow. much to her dismay we had to pay down her child. the woman was in histerics, screaming "YOU FUCKING PIGS" and caused a huge scene at the gate. I personally felt awful, but I had a job to do. Her husband tried calm her down after we told them we'd have to have them removed if they continued like this. they eventually calmed down and we proceeded to conduct a pat down on the 12 year old boy. I felt gross doing it, and I was just trying to get it over with. but when I was patting him down around his upper thighs, I felt something. something long and thick. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY SON? YOU SICK FUCK ILL KILL YOU" his mom yelled as I started stroking this long cylindrical object in the boys pants. the boy started looking nervous, tears in his eyes, but those tears didn't phase me. I knew what I had to do. suddenly I shoved my hand down the boys pants. shock and yelling over took the scene. every one out raged. the parents furious, frothing at the mouth yelling red in the face, my colleagues confused and worried. on Lookers gasped, some yelling "Fuck pigs!" others in tears. suddenly, I remove my hand from the boys pants, and in my hand, a stick of dynamite. a gasp overtakes the crowd. the parents now wide eyed and quite. I then remove the boys mask to reveal, Nosferatu. "not this time Nosferatu, your reign of terror ends now" "drats, curse you TSA and your intuitive security measures! I should have known better than to mess with America's elite security agency!" the parents were appearantly vampire servant slaves that were in on it. we garlic sprayed all three of them just for good measure, and locked them up immediately. every one clapped, and lives were saved. this is just an every day thing for TSA. so as a fellow TSA agent, I don't fault this man, because that small child could totally be a vampire lord with dynamite in his pants.

I live in Canada and let me tell you, it is SO annoying when I'm sitting in Economics trying to learn about actual problems going on in our country, and as soon as Justin Trudeau is brought up even my TEACHER goes off on a tangent about how attractive he is. Any search is uncomfortable for me as well. I only had my front pockets patted because I'd missed a couple of coins when emptying my pockets and it was really weird with that same slow, very gentle bordering on caressing touch from the TSA guy. I honestly think they're trained in that particular motion as it is very disarming and awkward, but in a way that you can't really put your finger on as to why you find it is offensive. Probably because it's unnatural for almost any other situation in life. I don't think he was trying to feel me up, he was just doing his job, and had tons of witnesses right there who would be on my side if he had because the TSA has a horrible reputation. People need to cut the guy some slack and stop calling him a pedo. He'd have to be the worlds stupidest pedo to be actively feeling the kid up while on camera and in front of live witnesses. I get this every time through TSA. why? because I have medication that can't go thru x-ray. they check that, drug screen the items, then pat me down including pulling my pants out to look inside at my under garments, touch around my breasts, run their hands (back, so it's ok -.-) over my nipples, and run it over the front of my vagina.They cup my butt and boobs and I have had them look in between my toes. Then there's my husband who gets thru with 2 lighters and a knife. It's gotten to the point in the past where my HUSBAND has said it makes him uncomfortable and asked them to stop. By the way, this is after I went thru (and passed) the regular and handheld metal detector plus I have 3 different doc notes. It's extremely uncomfortable and for me, more often than not, painful.

I live in the Bay Area and fly down to LA regularly for specialist appointments at UCLA medical neurology. I am in a wheelchair, and cannot go through the scanning process because, ya know, wheelchairs are metal and millimeter waves don't work. I have to go through this EXACT pat down twice every trip, and while I understand that the TSA needs some better protocols for able-bodied individuals, I do believe that pat downs are a necessary. People need understand that no one gets a freebie because they pass the eye test. If the TSA officer did anything wrong, it was if he didn't ask the boy and his mom if he would feel more comfortable if he did the pat down in private, where the mom could be with the son.

Michael Makoa the easiest example is Sarah Palin. She said a fair amount of dumb things, but conservatives had no problem with that. Then she wears one dress that is kinda tight, and suddenly the majority of her own political party said, "I just can't take a hussy like that seriously." I've also seen it with many female politicians that run for Senate, Congress or local gov't. If they are under 45 and even SLIGHTLY attractive, their critics claim they are just in politics for attention, the only reason people vote for them is because they're "hot", they obviously didn't earn their position, they have no idea what hard work is because attractive women don't have to work for anything, etc. The current mayor of my hometown is doing a better job than any of the last 3 mayors before her. But she's decent looking for her age (43), so the news papers still run editorials about how she "uses her feminine whiles" to trick the city council into doing things. (Even though she only ever wears these huge, over-sized, boxy, unflattering pantsuits) And I've also seen it first hand in both school and the professional work force. If a woman is even somewhat attractive, there are always a few assholes who assume she got the job/promotion/grade because the boss/teacher wants to bang them. Or if the boss/teacher is also a woman, then the assholes will say that the attractive girl obviously manipulated a man into doing her work for her. And those few assholes just keep spreading the rumors regardless of how they are disproven. TL:DR- there are many examples in politics, work and school.

Michael Makoa​ Well, you can't really dictate what people can or can't say about public figures because it would go against free speech. But you can call people out for spreading BS. And if enough people call it out, then maybe these newspapers/blogs/whatever will lose credibility and business. So maybe the public can enforce accountability where the gov't cannot. But that's just a short term reaction to a long term problem. People don't just suddenly develop double standards the day they turn 18. Those are bad habits that are taught and reinforced throughout childhood. We need to be teaching the new generations about personal responsibility. About acknowledging a person's merits and not using lame excuses (like physical appearance) to invalidate their achievements or potential. And people are always going to disagree on things. But we need to teach kids the difference between a good argument (logic/reason/proof) and the bullshit fallacies that people usually use as arguments. I'm just another person on the Internet, so I can't claim to have all the answers. But maybe these 2 approaches would be a good start.

Dylan It is a disorder not a disease. Look up the difference. That said, it is a very REAL disorder that my child has. It isn't even a "learning difference" as another sated. It is a disorder that affects the processing of sensory stimuli. My son went through over 2 years of occupational therapy and cognitive behavior therapy plus 6 months of social skills class before being discharged from the specialist. This was done through our local children's hospital. Please learn more before claiming something "isn't real". You have no idea the toll this takes on a family as a whole.

IN REGARDS TO THE TSA VIDEO: as someone who doesn't fly very often (i maybe fly at least once maybe twice a year) i didn't really see the cause for that much outrage. while i do not agree with the TSA not modifying their procedure to better accommodate a person with a disability or even an age appropriate modification, i was always under the impression that this kind of pat down was "by the books". i am well aware that when it comes to underage children, you have to be very careful as to what they are subjected to especially if they are your child .i would never want my underage family members to be subjected to anything that is deemed inappropriate. it's just that from the video i have seen, it seemed like the child was calm and the TSA agent conducted himself in a seemingly professional manner. perhaps this is my ignorance to checking in to flights, but this is just something i felt i needed to type. i might get flamed for this so do your worst.

holy shit. my 8 year old has SPD and this hits home so hard. thankfully when we traveled to FL from NJ in September the tsa agent were SO understanding and friendly. that was horrible to watch. when my son is having a bad day he has verbalized that anything touching him feels like electricity and sometimes it is just uncomfortable and other times its painful. My mother recently flew through Dallas and was also harassed and treated very rudely by their TSA agents. She has a stoma, basically an internal colostomy bag, as a result of bladder surgery and carries her medical information on her at all times. Despite this she was forced through multiple pat downs and basically treated like a criminal because the agents were convinced that she doesn't have an artificial bladder, but was instead attempting to smuggle something onto the plane.

I travel a LOT, and I've never really experienced any weird pat down stuff, anytime I've been randomly selected it's always some super quick thing cause clearly it's weird to the TSA agent who is just doin his job. As a woman, I hate how much buzzfeed objectifies men. But when it comes generally to Justin Trudeau, a lot of articles were written because individual people were talking about how 'hot' he was, and a lot of focus on that was his muscles when he was not wearing clothing. When it's individual people making these statements, I'm not really against it. But the daily mail is an organisation (I live in the uk and I hate that they're still on the shelves, they're RIDICULOUSLY sexist) and they were commenting on something COMPLETELY unrelated to the massive issue at hand, the Scottish referendum. These two women are our leaders in the UK, they deserve respect and after so much systematic sexism in our country I can't believe that in 2017 this still happens. I remember my father (in his 70s), who is a Navy Seal Vietnam vet with 4 purple hearts and PTSD, was going to take a flight for the first time in years with my mother. He had a hip replacement done a while before. Well, they get to the metal detectors and they go off, because of his hips. My mother can see the stress on my father as they do a pat down on him in the open so she pulls one TSA agent aside and tells him about his hips and asks if that could be why the detector went off. Well, the person said, yes, that's probably what did it. They continued patting down my father, making my mom and dad more and more uncomfortable. Well, once everything was done my father was so upset and done with the situation they didn't get on their plane and cancelled their plans. My mother was in tears. My father was a man that fought for our country and here he was being insulted, embarrassed, and disrespected. He refuses to fly ever again. The thought that the TSA doesn't take personal, medical, issues into account, even when mentioned to them is insane. People shouldn't be put in degrading situations in general, but to not find alternative ways of searching them when presented with someone's 'handicaps' but instead doubling down is disgusting.

I think Phil really did a good job hitting on both of these examples of sexism/objectification in the media. They are two extremely similar situations but only one is getting attention or being attacked. Thanks for pointing out an internal bias. I really didn't think "WTF?!" after seeing the second headlines, but it is the exact same situation. This is something I'll need to stop and think about before siding with someone in these situations. If equality is the goal, we can't have double standards - either it is acceptable to sexualize/objectify a person or it is not.

The TSA is definitely a waste. They are frustrating and annoying because they take forever to do anything, and yet they do not accomplish anything. And the fact that they have a 5% success rate, nope nope nope. My grandfather literally left his pocket knife in his carry on, and they didn't find it. And this pocket knife was very big, not some tiny little thing. If the TSA actually accomplished something and helped us, then I wouldn't be angry. But the fact that they are invading the privacy of other people without actually saving us from dangers, no no nope. This is so ridiculous.

My Mother was visiting her Sister in Florida(she was Canadian). They both got in a car accident and my Mother broke her hip, she was over 60 at the time. Because the healthcare system is so expensive in the USA, they sent a nurse to bring her back to Canada. On her way through customs, the TSA made her stand for half her pat down and then made her walk through the metal detector along with everyone else. The nurse demanded to assist her through but they would not allow it since there were handrails she could hold on to... He literally had to catch her on the other side as she could no longer hold her own weight. GG TSA! PS Trudeau is a douche.

want to know my thoughts on the TSA? In 2015 I flew to Alaska and had a layover in Seattle. Being it was 5 hours, I stepped outside with my then 5 month old son to walk and get some fresh air. We went back through TSA and I was selected for a pat down. They gave me a very condescending attitude when they found out my son and I were flying solo (husband was already at the destination) and I was given a VERY touchy pat down. My son was in his carrier and crying while that happened. I don't think I need to describe how humiliated I felt walking out of a secluded room fixing my outfit and struggling with a baby and rushing to grab my luggage and be on my way. TSA is bullshit and if that had been my son getting such an invasive pat down, I'd be tackling someone.

Because SPD does NOT just mean you have "difficulties processing information" ... because those difficulties typically animate/result in pain, confusion, even nausea and delirium. As someone who has studied the full body scanners that TSA uses (BTW they can save your photos hence why i refuse to go through the scanners) I request pat downs every time i go through security. And even though I disagree with the TSA policies nothing that man did was out of norm, first they slide their hands down your back and front and yes they have to check the genital area. Is it weird to see an old man perform this on a child? Yes, but this man is just doing his job and i bet that 2 min was probably more uncomfortable for him than anyone else.

Hey Phil, I really agree with you on the whole equality for both sexes in terms of objectification. Being from Scotland, I can say that when Nicola Sturgeon lost a little weight and changed her appearance it was all that UK media wanted to talk about her for. Her predecessor, Alex Salmond, didn't face nearly this amount of sexism. While you say "we shouldn't take the Daily Mail seriously" I totally agree but I can say that there are many people across the UK who pick up the Sun or the Daily Mail newspaper and read it as their legitimate news source. From my point of view, women are far more subject to this sexism in politics but I agree that we have to fight the battle for both sexes. I am proud that in Scotland 3/5 main party political leaders are women and that 4/5 consider themselves LGBT. Tackling sexism in the media is essential to tackling sexism overall.

I am a professional truck driver. When TSA was created, we had to go thru a TSA background check, mind you at a 1 time 85 dollar fee. After they realized how much money they were getting, they changed the rules and now made it a mandatory background check every 5yrs when you have to renew your Class A license! At a new fee of 95 dollars and again go thru a waiting period of up to 2 months before you are cleared! What a joke
