HotS because I love seeing the scale with Terran and Zerg. LotV is definitely a close second. Makes me wish they had done something better with WoL, but it was more an announcement of SC2 than anything. If we're talking all of them, idk. Again, anything that shows scale is awesome. SC1 "Where is the air support" to see the BC overhead is awesome. LotV when the Golden Armada unleashes upon Amon. But also in SC1, the Sergeant just saying "Fire" at the Dragoon, has always stuck with me haha.

Awesome choice! So this is not what's left of them, this is the equivalent of the D-day first wave. They're called "Tip of the Spear". Their main mission is to protect that pylon being built, because that's what enables the bulk of the force to start warping in. Also a small detail I loved: When they were showing how the Khala connects them, the last zealot in the slo mo shot ducks to dodge the Hydralisk strike coming from behind him, because another warrior in the group saw it and instantaneously relayed that information telepathically.

The part with the Archon sacrificing itself is so brilliant. You can hear the charge, you can hear it building. You know that this is going to end in a ear splitting explosion or crash. But. No. It builds and builds and builds and.... nothing. Complete silence. Instead of something, there is nothing. It causes you to mentally stumble when you first experience it. In a way, the silence is so much louder than any explosion could be.
@yaelz6043

It also fits the lore of archons. Every Protoss who dies joins the Khala as a type of living memory, but the two High Templars who become an archon will be gone forever. The building crescendo encapsulates their power well and the silence after is what the rest of the Protoss would experience from the sudden loss.

Probius is the hero of this cinematic. Also, I wouldn't call it a "hive mind", each individual has thoughts of their own. It's more like a "cloud storage", where an individual can access others'(living or not) thoughts and senses and memories and what they see and etc. Edit: I love this cinematic because if you know the lore, you won't be disappointed. 7:39 illustrates this very well. One templar(TA) initiates the ritual while the other one(TB) has a delayed reaction. Using the Khala, TB would already have known what TA wants. Merging in the lore is not a decision the templars take lightly. I say the animators really know their lore as you can see TB looking at TA, hesitating, before finally deciding to proceed.

MY LIFE FOR AIUR!!! (not often I get to use that battlecry these days) So Philip, bit of lore for you, this cinematic is the opening scene for the battle to reclaim Aiur, the Protoss (the blue aliens') homeworld and the first mission for "SC2: Legacy of the Void". The ruined buildings you see, those are Protoss buildings. As for the Khala, yes, that's essentially a hive mind nexus. And that floating pyramid thing, it's called a pylon (and is a major meme in the SC@ community - "you must construct more pylons"), and is why the Protoss could call in that big wave of reinforcements - the pylon basically doubles as a battery and a teleportation beacon, which you see the the reinforcement do big time at the end.

So for anyone curious this is an rts game made by blizzard and was originally released back in 2010 as starcraft 2 wings of liberty. This is the opening cinematic for its second and final expansion made in 2015 called Legacy of the Void. It follows the exploits of the Protoss and their Hierarch Artanis who is narrating this cinematic while trying to retake their homeworld of Aiur back from the Zerg Swarm that was lost during the previous game. The cinematic features mostly gameplay accurate depictions of roughly how all the units work in game for example the amount of time that crystal structure called the pylon took to finish construction was accurate to gameplay. The units represented on the protoss side featured in video at 1:15 are Center, center left, and far right the zealot the most basic protoss combat unit with dual melee attacks and the ability to rapidly charge at a target from rage to engage them. Far left and center right are high templar a powerful spell casting unit that can conjure electrical storms that deal heavy damage over time, can turn the stored energies of other casters into a feedback loop causing them to lose all stored energy and take famage per energy lost, and can merge i to an archon (depicted later in the cinematic) with either another high templar or a dark templar who isnt shown in the video but is an invisible melee unit that deals extremely high damage. Finally in the very back the robot is called a probe it is the protoss basic worker unit harvests resources and constructs protoss prefabricated buildings by opening rifts in space-time and summoning them from elsewhere to the battlefield the pylon it constructed provided access to the psionic matrix that powers other protoss structures and in the cinematic allows protoss warpgates the basic production structure to warp in units to any location covered by a power field. The zerg units shown are the Zergling the small nimble creatures are fast and cheap melee units and serve as the first available combat unit for the zerg faction. While the zealot is powerful the zergling is numerous and is created in pairs for half the price of a zealot (50 minerals as opposed to the zealots 100) effectively meaning you can have 4 zerglings for the same resource investment as a single zealot. The next unit is the baneling the green ball things are living acid bombs that suicidally explode when contacting an enemy or when killed by enemy fire. They deal cery high damage to units that are considered "light" armored such as zealots and high templar and despite exploding they never deal damage to friendly forces. Banelings are also mutated directly from zerglings where zerglings and most other zerg units hatch from a larval state back at their hatcheries. The tall snake like creatures eith the large scythe arms are called Hydralisks the cinematic doesnt do the best representation of this unit as it is primarily a ranged fighter by launching needle spines out of their carapaces at speeds faster than bullets though they do have an alternative melee animation ehen attacking at melee distance. They are also the only unit besides the archon in the cinematic capable of attacking air units Lastly the teo big boys the protoss Archon which earlier i mentioned is created by two high templar merging together is rather poorly represented from a gameplay standpoint. Its shockeave attack does not have anywhere near the range depicted nor does it deal damage in a line it insteaddeals damage in a radius around the archons primary target and the archon deals bonus damage to targets with the "biological" armor tag which includes every single zerg unit. The archon is very unique among all units in the game as it has the lowest hp of all combat units at 10 but all protoss units have a psionic shield protecting them and the archon has a massive 350 shield points which for comparison the zealot has 50 shield points but 100 health points. Archons also sadly do not have that implosion ability in game they are purely an attacking unit with a very good total effective health pool for its cost. The Zerg Kaiju is called an Ultralisk and it is thethird tankiest unit in the entire game. It is another melee unit but its quite expensive to make and zerglings have far more damage density but the ultralisk makes up for that with a cleaving attack that can hit multiple enemies and the third highest hp pool and highest armor in the game. It is also the fastest large unit in the game. Beats the archon in a head on fight. Some other fun facts. Merging into an archon is a suicide pact as the archon cannot prevent itself from burning through all its psionic energy that sustains whats left of the templars physical form the Khala mentioned in the cinematic is a sacred union of memories and emotions of the protoss race and lets any protoss who trains themselves into controlling it view any memory and emotions of any protoss in the khala living or dead and merging into an archon on top of killing onesself also cuts you out of the Khala. There is also another form of archon called the Dark Archon that can only be merged by two dark templar though this unit is not in the games multiplayer mode you can create them in the campaign. The Dark Archon channels the energies of the Void to manipulate both minds and computers around them. In the campaign they have access to two abilities 1. Confusion which targets an area and forces enemy units in the targetted area to attack friendly units for 10 seconds and 2. Mind Control which permanently gives you control of a targetted enemy unit instantly. It was originally introduced in the original starcrafts expansion brood war where it had access to mind control and feedback but also an ability called maelstrom which would stun any biological units in an area for several seconds. The Dark templar also known as the Nerazim are a tribe of protoss who decided to reject the Khala as they feared loss of individuality and were persecuted for this and forced to flee Aiur. Later on when the zerg conquered Aiur and displaced the Khalai protoss the Nerazim took them in and the two groups have united into the Daelaam which Artanis leads. Dark templat channel void energies which grant them the powers to manipulate the battlefield the main representatives in the multiplayer are the dark templar unit and the oracle which is a fast flying caster unit capable of deploying traps that freeze targets in time and revealing the area ahead of themselves. They also have a unique mechanic where their attack must be activated and drains energy while its active. Other nerazim abilities seen in the campaign include a modification of the typical zealot charge in which the nerazim zealot (called the centurion) briefly becomes stealthed and can charge through other units to reach its target and emits a stunning pulse on contact, the dark templat in the campaigncan quickly teleport between several targets dealing heavy damage and becoming invulnerable during the attack, and they can stop time for all hostile forces across the entire map for 20 seconds letting you do anything you want for that period.

Hands down, the best game trailer ever made. Just so much detail and emotion, showing perfectly protoss, their bond, their sacrifice. This is the StarCraft 2 version of D-Day, where that small party had to establish a beach head for their entire invasion army. The small droid (Probe) was building a Pylon to act as a beacon for their reinforcements to come through. As for the kaiju battle, the fusion monster is called the Archon, and they're the last gambit of all the High (and Dark) Templar. Essentially they're setting their power to overdrive and breaking their brakes in the process, and they wouldn't be able to stop until they burn out or explode. The enemy kaiju is called the Ultralisk, and canonically a human-sized being doesn't even reach its knees, let alone its huge overall height (just look at the Heart of the Swarm intro). If you want to do more LotV, Alone (Shakuras ending) is another great cinematic that's like this. I personally think that it's even better.

The brilliant part of this piece is how grounded it is in the mechanics on the game. This race, the protoss, can teleport units anywhere they have a pylon, or source. The star of the show is that little gold eyeball guy, a probe, a builder unit that can't fight at all. At 1:42 he sweeps around and starts summoning a pylon inconspicuously while the flashier characters fight, and apart from the narrator those characters are all sacrificed to a man giving cover to that work so that the last surviving unit can receive reinforcements. This is EXACTLY how a small vanguard might try to take a foothold against an entrenched position in the game itself. It's not just visual worldbuilding, its visually establishing gameplay as well and cementing a connection in the viewers mind between the exact gameplay rotations they're going to experience and an epic narrative of sacrifice for a larger goal.

well, from gameplay perspective - Protos Zealots (aliens with with glowing wrist blades) are really good melee fighters, and like all Protos units (and buildings) have energy shields , note energy shield breaking when first rolling Zerg Baneling (dangerous suicide land unit, in this case upgraded to roll instead of just crawling) impacts Zealot and its shield shatters and second Baneling kills Zealot. hovering aliens (two of the initial group) are High Templars , kinda magicians but not a close combat unit, note one got downed by Zergling (most basic Zerg land unit), they sacrifice themselves to join into High Archon. by lore there are no old Archons as only as last resort they resort to merging. Archon has really strong shield and is quite strong ground unit but there is not much matter under that shield (notice energy connecting parts of it) got cornered by Zerg Utlralisk (one of strongest Zerg land units). while i don't think Archon going down takes close units with it. that small Drone with one eye that makes that blackhole looking thing rebotic worker/"builder" unit, it set up portal to warp-in a Pylon (local energy generator) , and presence of Pylon allows warping-in troops

It's not a hive mind for protoss. They simply communicate telepathically and do not have mouths. Verbal communication is considered primitive and savage to them. When they called in back-up, it was using in-game rules too. The probe started warping in the psi pylon at the start of the fight, which is how protoss build structures in the game and it finished warping in near the end. Protoss can also warp in units from the production buildings to any place that has a psi pylon. Terran trains their ground units from a barracks while Protoss warps them in from a gateway(in-game). If you haven't done the Heart of the Swarm opening, that one is better imo. Not just how epic it is in scale but also the animations and sense of doom.

I for the life of me can't find where you watched any other starcraft cinematics...unless it was part of a live stream that you didn't cut for a second video. Anybody know what it would be titled under? I looked through 3 years and crtl+F searched starcraft, but this is the only video.

If that Archon had said, "My life for Aiur" when it was charging up to warp the Brutalisk out, I wonder if that would've turned out epic or not.

Something that's not explicitly stated but is obvious if you've followed the marketing for Starcraft 2, is that Blizzard is..... not exactly mirroring, but certainly playing off the concept of the original SC2 trailer, which shows nothing else but the creation of the most basic Terran unit (a marine) being suited up for battle. This trailer has a battle between many different aliens, but the heroes and the focus are: 1) A Zealot, the most basic Protoss infantry unit 2) A single Drone, the builder unit that has almost zero combat ability but can summon a Protoss structure anywhere on the map 3) A single Pylon, which in game generates energy in a radius around itself, powering further warp-ins and structures. These are literally *the most basic* things in the Protoss army, but when the Pylon completes it's warp-in, the immediate reaction for anyone who knows is "Oh, you're _FUCKED_ ." Because in SC2 you can warp in troops to anywhere on the map that has pylon power. If you rewatch it, the warp rift can be seen in the background multiple times, and the Protoss aren't just fighting because the Zerg are there, they're intercepting them and protecting the rift at all costs. They're buying time to allow it to finish it's construction, because it's the foothold that opens the floodgates for the true Protoss force to arrive.

@@chrayez Co-op Artanis Prestige 1 (the caster prestige) High Archons feel a bit more like how an Archon should feel in-game. They chuck out huge psi-storms that basically make all your units immortal (they heal your shields like 200 points over 5 seconds), and that just shred anything weaker than a hybrid. The shield regen on their massive shield pool, with the double-damage improved storms just really fills in the power fantasy that they don't have in PvP or even the singleplayer campaign.

What always struck me as incredibly world building, is how both the Zerg (the monsters being fought in the video) and the Protoss both have their own different variety of hivemind, and how this plays out in the story. Spoilers incoming. The Zerg themselves are not evil, but rather their hivemind was used against them to enslave them and use them as weapons. Which the Protoss have used to justify the belief that the Protoss hivemind is inherently superior to the Zerg hivemind. Saying stuff like, "Protoss unity is stronger than those feable-minded Zerg," and generally being confident that the Protoss hivemind is pure and uncorruptable. But the plot of Starcraft 2 revolves around the Zerg, after having broken free from their enslavement, rediscovering their culture and identity. And in turn, the Protoss themselves have their hivemind turned against them to enslave them in service the Big Bad Villain. And the Zerg, the race that decimated the Protoss race, goes on to help save the Protoss from the same sort of enslavement the Zerg used to be victims of. A completely reversal of perspective that eventually leads the Protoss to sever their nerve cords, killing the Protoss hivemind so it could never again be used to enslave them. The Protoss thought they were different, superior, better lifeforms. And then they wound up in the same situation the Zerg used to be in. Has a bit of a, "you are not immune to propaganda" vibe. The Protoss thought they were too good to be vulnerable, and they were not. Fantastic storytelling.

Blizzard used to be so amazing with their world-building, voice actor, lore, characters, and everything. WoW was also a master piece. Now we look at Blizzard and Overwatch 2... Overwatch when first introduced with its trailers held so much promise with its animations and lore/world-building. Game comes out, lore becomes non-existent. Why? Diablo 4 was even more hilarious. I went through the campaign and I quite enjoyed it. Then at the end, I asked if there would be more story. Nope. That's it. What? I love StarCraft. Amazing masterpiece of its time.

This cinematic got me hyped for Legacy of the void after the Heart of the Swarm disappointed me with girlboss and complete revamping of the Zerg lore. I was all in on reclaiming Aiur and going deep into Protoss telepathy... And the game turned out to be exact opposite of that.
