It made me happy that you mentioned the phalanx formation. While this is not a true phalanx as that would have the spears in a somewhat forward porcupine looking formation. The front spears point straight, the next line points upwards a little higher, 3rd points a little higher than the 2nd. This extends 10-20 rows back until the spears literally point straight up. This is to deflect or slow down arrow volleys while also protecting your front lines with the shield/pike wall. Also, the pike is called a Sarissa in Greek hoplite formations and they're usually 7-9 meters long depending on which formation/culture you're talking about. A phalanx also is only vulnerable from the sides so they made a good tactical move posting up on the other side of a bridge to bottleneck them and not allow them to outflank them. The only turd in the punch bowl was Inarius himself as his tactical move to put his most precious resources (his holy light) in jeopardy to move past his own defensive lines was stupid af. It's like spending 10 years building a castle with full granaries, fully garrisoned and attacking a besieging army thats 5 times your size by sallying out the front gate.

Diablo's design of angels has always been my favorite depiction of them. You get both feelings of holiness but also horror. They tend to have fancy, shining armor, but then a black void for a face. They have wings of blinding, pure light, but they're terrifying tendrils. And I like that, not only bc in the story the angels are flawed characters, but bc the visual language of it communicates: "holy, dramatic, and powerful, but also harrowing, foreboding, harbinger of destruction."

One thing you might have missed, but Hell is actively trying to repel Inarius. And you can see that as he lands. He anchors his wings into the ground, which he then used to pull himself down to land. The ground cracks under the pressure of two forces pushing against each other. It's a very powerfull scene.

Inarius and Lilith rebelled against the Heavens and the Burning Hells. They created Sanctuary and after some changes to their other creations, humans, which is why she is referred to the mother of Sanctuary. Inarius began to doubt they were on the right path, and he proceeds to kills everything they created to get back to the Heavens. Rathma, their son, was killed as Inarius sought to redeem himself.

Hi Phil, I'm not a huge loremaster on Diablo Lore. You probably got better answers in your stream. As far as I remember, Inarius was one of the angels who got imprisoned in hell and was tortured for many thousands of years. Not sure how he and Lillith met, but at some point they fell in love and decided to flee. They stole the worldstone (I think thats the name) and created Sanctuary, (some pocket dimension) the world where the game is located. Their son, Rathma, was killed in Diablo 4.
@brandonsmith24594 ай бұрын
They met because they (as well as several others on both sides) were tired of the endless war between heaven and hell, and as they conversed they discovered they had a fair amount of things in common. They knew that both sides were not going to stop fighting , thus they stole the world stone (also called the eye of anu) and used it to create sanctuary. Things happened and they had babies among them being rathma. Eventually both sides discovered the world and both tried to covet it, and inarius was eventually captured, where he was given to Mephisto as a trade for peace, where mephisto tortured him for a very long time. It’s unknown as of yet how he escaped.

for story i can say inarius was one of Soldiers of Heaven...he wanted to end eternal conflict(between hell and heaven) and at some point He find some Demons(lilith and her followers) from hell that have purpose like him...they created a safe place from War name it "sanctuary" and they fell in love with each other what was born from Demons and Angel was humanity...Inarius once stood as father and defend his family and son(he even banished lilith to void) but after humanity and Inarius lost war to heaven and hell..heaven send inarius to hell(mephisto's domain one of seven prime evil of hell)as a punishment for his betrayel against heaven and after so many years somehow he escaped Hell and returned to "Sanctuary"...he is now a broken shell of himself and the only thing he want is to return to his home(heaven)...he then find a prophecy and want to set things right but the prophecy was not about him... Demons could corrupt Angels but inarius was a rare case that not corrupted.
@D2Mephisto5 ай бұрын
yes exactly. inarius was not corrupted, he just lost his mind in grief over the bad choices he continued to make time and time again. inarius isn't really a fallen angel, he's more of an angel who went mad internally

I think each one of those warriors is a Knight Penitent. Their armor is fitted with cruel spikes that point inward, so with every strike the wearer makes, these spikes pierce their flesh. This is intentional, however, as their faith powers the suit. How this works is known only to a privileged few within the Church. The excruciating pain is a price worth paying for inhumanly extreme levels of strength, durability, and protection from external damage. The downside is that any dwindle in faith may make the user lose any benefit the armor gives, to the point where it can't even support itself.

30:35 Not to take away from the fact that it is an INCREDIBLE shot, but it made me laugh how I suddenly felt like I was watching a telenovela. 'Lilith, I've been cheating on you with... your sister.' I mean, nobody has a conversation facing away like that, but it is undeniably effective for the camera. Especially here, where Lilith viscerally feels the death of her son, and Inarius is emotional distant from it, represented by their proximity to the camera.

@drq50024 ай бұрын
Here's the short form explanation: Lilith and Inarius fled the eternal war between angels and demons. They created "Sanctuary" an earth like place to hide, and they bred. This is where humanity started, and some of them had to extraordinary powers, such as their son. Rathma was a necromancer, which is not considered "evil" in Diablo lore. It meant he could balance life and death, and that's extraordinary, even for angels or demons. Many humans had other powers or evolved into the heroes you play in game. These humans were seen as a threat by both Hell and Heaven. Both parties sent agents to remove humanity, and being a good mom, Lilith slaughtered all meaning to hurt her children. Inarius couldn't handle it, and banished her, hopefully to not return (that didn't work). I think what we see in this cinematic is the rise of Diablo's version of Lucifer. Inarius is often called "The Light." It wouldn't be the first time an angel becomes humanity's enemy in the series. You face Izual in both D2 and D3. In D3, Malthael is the actual angel of death. Since humans are half demon, and angels fight demons... he wipes out half of them before being defeated. Hence why D4 is so dark. Humanity still hasn't recovered.
@BritGirlJay5 ай бұрын
Lilith was much more sympathetic than Inarius in game imo. Inarius was so rigid and dictator-like, him and Mother Prava only saw absolutes where Lilith's vision was more nuanced. She wasn't 'good' by any stretch but playing it you do tend to feel Inarius has got things wrong (also he's so self-centered - it's about what HE wants, what benefits HIM).
@XRaidenXxX5 ай бұрын
Mother always knows best after all ...😈
@aaronburdon2212 ай бұрын
If you know her full backstory she becomes considerably less sympathetic. Her goal was to raise the nephilim to be her soldiers to destroy the high heavens and the burning hells. Granted, she did save the nephilim because Inarius and the other refugees from the burning hells and the high heavens were debating killing them all (she saved them) by killing all the refugees instead of the nephilim. She didn't care much about her children except for how they could be used as pawns for her own ends. Then she could be the ruler of the ashes basically.

The paradox here is demon Lilith is a "good" character here. She is broken and betreyed mother who just wanted to have her peace and family with Inarius. That's why they created Sanctuary ( diablo's Main world which was desingned to avoid war between heavens and Bell ) This bastard Inarius, only thinks os himself. He killed their children along Rathma, first necromancer. As can be seen on video, he doesent give a shit about anyone there, he only wanted to get back to heaven what wont work, because heavens dont give a shit about him the same he dont care about anythink but rejoining heavens. Me personally hate angels im diablo world they are as bad as devils, and maybe event worse. All the way team Lilith, a demon tired of fighing and wars who just created world for herself and her family, which eventually became battle arena do endless war. Eh...

@@khaii13 do you understand what "good" in apostrophe means? Shes still a demon form the big 7. But Sanctuary was calm and peaceful at the time of Nephalem, And she maybe would end war if she haden't been beatufiuly played by Mefisto. That's the paradox, and that's why Inarius right before his death was looking like he has demon wings. He took all these people to Hell to fight in his name onły on his egoistic purpose. There are no good and bad here, every one has their own indyvidual agenda. But Lilith was true in her search for a place without endless war. Inarius betreyed her family and broker her, and at time of diablo 4, she's desperate mother, "wife" , beiing that is designed to feel emphatized with a one of the biggest deamons out there cause what she do is right at the moment. I love that scenario when all comes to human factor even in demons or angels.
@khaii135 ай бұрын
@@VTec91852 sanctuary was relatively peaceful during the time when their pocket dimension was not yet discovered by the burning hells or the high heavens. But even before they were discovered, there was already tension as the original angels and demons who joined them were fearful of the original nephalems’ powers and what it could mean if either side got their hands on them. This caused Inarius to slowly diminish their power. But, still perceiving threat to her offspring, Lilith murdered all the angels and demons behind Inarius’ back during his time of reflection; which was the cause of her banishment. And she doesn’t really “dothe right thing”. Rather she only appears to be doing the right thing. Remember what she did to Nyrelle’s mother? Or to Donan and his son? Everyone is still, in the end, a disposable chess piece to her. Her and Inarius are simply two sides of the same coin, in the end.

The thing is, in Diablo 4, Lillith is the 'Good Guy' trying to save the world, while Inarius, the angel, is known to be a liar, manipulator, murderer, who cares only about himself. THe thing about Diablo 4 is, it does everything to setup a choice, to stick with the supposed good guys who aren't really, or her, who while she's doing some bad stuff, is literally trying to save the world and humanity as a species. Only you never get the choice, and in the end, you 'Kill' her for no real reason but 'Demon bad' while you work with her father, who is one of the biggest murderous liars in all of Diablo lore.

I have always loved the story of Inarius and Lilith because it is basically the story of Romeo and Juliete to the setting of a religious metaphysical cosmic backdrop. Knowing the lore / backstory to Inarius and Lilith's history makes this so much better imo. For me at least i feel for Lilith coz she did lose her firstborn at the hands of Inarius. And even if they did make a choice to involve themselves with eachother, resulting in the birth of Rathma, Inarius killing his own offspring could never be accepted by heavenly law.

I highly recommend watching the 4 "Diablo IV | Book of Lorath" animated videos on the official Diablo youtube channel, they explain the most of the deep lore and world building in about 40 minutes.
