A well-written Symphony that surely deserves to be played much more often in modern times! I very much enjoyed the quality of the playing here. The conductor & musicians seem to be really tuned in to the spirit of this music & convey it with firm conviction & sensitivity throughout. The tonal qualities of this orchestra & recording strike me as being very appropriate. It is also notable that Franck's writing keeps a superb thread of coherence through a long work, always giving the impression of knowing where he is going, so that the listener is never lost in meandering: an elusive quality that many more celebrated works don't equal. Great to listen to this today. Thank you very much for this fine transfer! 😊

Thanks. A symphony that some dislike but one that I have enjoyed since I first heard it around half a century ago.

As my friend The Organised Pianist says, this has complete coherence, and as VS says, 'A symphony that some dislike." Well I find it a challenge, and waited till I could give it a proper listen. I have played in it twice, and it rewarded me playing it, and I can see its value [not least from thoroughly rehearsing it], but it still not something I find easy to like, just listening! My loss, for sure. On the other hand the performance, recording [in such a really well considered transfer], and wonderfully supple conducting make a great case for it! The transfer is astonishingly fine. Best wishes from George

Thank you George. Yes, this is a work that often divides people. I first encountered it long ago and in my teens acquired an LP version by Barbirolli and the Czech Philharmonic. At a time when I owned very few LPs and CD hadn't been thought of, it got quite a few plays and I became very familiar with the work. It was my first experience of Franck and it certainly prepared me for his organ works. (Many of course say that he had only one tune!)
