Louinator59 I was born and raised in Orange County. I went to Canyon High. I moved to LA to Venice Beach in 1999 to work for a startup called Razorfish. I worked in the big Binocular building in Venice Beach. That was awesome. I left LA in 2015. Back then I had an apartment on Barry and Idaho next to Santa Monica Blvd. Next to a place called Cafe 50’s. My one bedroom apartment was $725 a month!! Those days are over. Living in LA and OC in the 70’s and 80’s was awesome. Traffic was only rush hour and only on the freeway! House prices are through the roof and it’s over populated. Trust me, there is life after California. People ask if I miss LA, I say I would if I owned a Flux Capacitor and a Delorian. I don’t miss the current California. I miss what it was. It’s not the same anymore. I have great memories of those times and what it was like living there back then. Take care man.

Good Vibez So those actually were banana peppers? That’s usual as a side with a sandwich, but from his reaction I thought surely they were some pepper I’m not familiar with. He just nibbled a bit off the end. They’re about the hottest pepper I’d be willing to bite into, but that’s partially because they’re the mildest ones short of bells and because my stomach doesn’t appreciate anything spicy. :(

Those are not banana peppers. They are picked cascabella peppers and depending on the size the heat can vary. It’s a California thing. They have them at in n out and many small burger places. My poor Dad now lives in TX and has to load up on them when he visits.

My favorite type of boiled eggs are "tea eggs" which are a Chinese thing, the folks at my local 99 Ranch are always surprised that I like them. You boil eggs then simmer them in a mixture of strong black tea and soy sauce, and a few seasoning, and also you crack the shell - don't remove the shells just crack them, so when you peel them they have a neat pattern on them.

Never been there before, thanks for the review, certainly an iconic L.A. restaurant. The Coca-cola in the bottles is bottled at the San Cristobal Plant, in Chiapas, Mexico and is reminiscint of the original Coke. The canned Coke has high fructose corn syrup in it. I prefer the "original."

wow Adam, you guys ate at one of my absolute favorite places!!! I was there last in late Summer or early Fall. I used to travel with other seniors on trips into Los Angeles on the Metro Rail once a month but all that stopped. I miss it. I would love to go to Union Station and then over to Philippe's. I am craving it so much. My go to order is a beef double dipped (I like it with lots of the au jus and it depends on the person serving you - some don't dip long enough), cole slaw, a custard, and a cup of coffee. It looks like from the sign they may have changed their coffee provider. I really loved their coffee. Another big change - they have remodeled due to the virus!!! The way you line up now and that seating area is all totally different. It's kind of lost it''s old school feel. But that doesn't change how good the food is.

OH YES! This is the one I've been waiting for! I absolutely ADORE Philippe's. It is probably my all-time favorite food. I always either go with the beef or the pork dip. They are so incredible. I love French Dips from pretty much anywhere but nothing beats Phillipe's. For all the awesome delis that we have in L.A. (Canter's, Jerry's, Brent's, etc...) nobody makes a better French Dip than the original. Plus, Phillipe's has much better prices than those others. I've been going to this place ever since I was a kid and every time I finish my meal, I start counting the days until my next one. One of the things that we to sometimes is go to Olvera Street, walk around a bit, then go eat at Phillipe's. Or we may go eat there after a Dodger game (if it's a day game). The atmosphere in there gets really awesome. Whenever I'm anywhe near downtown, I'll make my way to Phillipe's for lunch. Lots of memories attatched to this restaurant. A Los Angeles institution to be sure.

Micycles The food looked absolutely amazing, but I’m reall wary of Los Angeles. I grew up in rural Louisiana and live in Orange County so LA scares me. Is it an okay place in the daytime, then? That particular area? I wanted to see Olvera St too though I dunno how it would be currently, maybe not much going on.

Adam, the next time you go, order your sandwich "wet" (it's a menu option) and they will completely submerge your sandwich in the pan of au jus, which is just a fancy French term meaning "with sauce." Au jus is the reduced and seasoned pan drippings from roasting the beef. Great video...glad to see folks eating indoors again!

You should go to Jerry's Deli, a historic and classic deli/restaurant in Studio City. There are other locations, but that's the original. It has been in countless movies and comedians are known to hang out there. The hubby and I go whenever we're at Universal since it's close by. I met Don Rickles there before his passing. What a great guy! It's a jewish deli with the best pastrami and jewish pastries. You should look it up. It's fascinating. I’ve been to Philippe only once but it was great. You had a Single which is a single dip, not the amount of meat. They are Single, one bread dipped, Double both breads dipped and Wet which is essentially submerged. I got double dipped, it was perfect. Also the banana peppers aren’t really that hot. To get through one, take a good bite of the sandwich then include a pepper in the mouthful. It spreads out the hotness. Yum! It’s like the mustard, don’t just squirt it in your mouth, enhance the sandwich. Great show as always. I agree with The Original Pantry suggestion. Not sure how Covid is affecting them. They were also displaced by the 110 freeway. Maybe a hearty breakfast there? Or a steak, if they are open. Thanks Adam!

Oh man this takes me back. When I was a kid my Dad would always take us to dinner or lunch at Philippe's before a Dodger game. Such great times. BTW, Adam Its been long debated over who invented the French Dip. Some say it was Philippe's, some say it was Cole's which was established in 1908 and resides in the old Pacific Electric Railway building downtown, it's where all the street cars used to be stored. (A important theme to the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit.) Its apparently got a speakeasy in the back and on the list of Los Angeles Historical Monuments. Might be worth trying them too, lots of history there.

Nice vid. I love eating at Philippe's. I have been many times. I get the turkey French dip and ask for it "wet". This means while normally they dip the bread into the dipping sauce, asking for it wet, they dip it twice. But I also ask for it " very wet". I love it. She double dips the bread, then pours the 1/2 cup or more over the entire sandwich. Then you pour their hot horseradish mustard on the sandwich. Its great! I also get their potato salad which is also amazing. Their brownies are good, but their pies are perfect. Especially their fresh boysenberry pie. I have not been there since the pandemic, but hopefully one day soon. Ask for it wet or very wet, and when eating it, dip it more in the sauce, then add their hot mustard horseradish sauce over it. OMG (its the best)! Once day I noticed that their prices keep going up like in many places. But I was told my management that all workers at Philippe's get full healthcare and retirement benefits, so that is where most of their cost goes too. Thanks for filming and reviewing Philippe's.

Nice video Adam! Philippes French Dip Sandwiches are really good. I've been there plenty. Though the actual oldest public house in L.A. is at their rival Cole's French Dip in downtown on 6th street. Cole's has been in the same building since 1908, they never moved locations.

Philppe is way better than Cole's in my opinion.

My Grand Parents took my brother and I to Philipps in 1972. In those days the meats were all fresh cooked in their kitchen and the ladies at the counter used to slice it of the bone and add it to those french rolls. My uncle took me a few times and it was the same. Today they use deli meat. Already made meats that maybe they slice to order. Not bad and their salads are as amazing as ever but I miss going in there and seeing fresh cooked meats coming out and being sliced for the sandwiches.

The Philippe Original French Dip is amazing being around for so long. That’s my kind of place. It’s great y’all got to eat inside the place. That was nice. Y’all did get there just in time before it got busy. So many great eating places that I never knew about before that we don’t have where I live. I hope you keep the food series going for a long time. Thank you for doing this series. Be safe.

Thanks for covering Phillippe the Original! This is what I think is cool about it, besides the fact that it's historic (and it sounds really good): if you arrive on the Amtrak Sunset Ltd, it is due in LA at around 5:35 am. You're allowed to stay in your room/ette to get more awake, until maybe 6:15-6:30 or so. But if you wait too long, you're in rush hour in downtown LA. So you take a quick shower when you arrive, then dress quickly, leaving your room as neat as possible. Then go get your reserved rental car, and your luggage, and you're good to go. Phillipe is officially 1.5 blocks from Union Station, but since the station is so big, its probably 5 or 6 blocks from your room on the train (i realize I'm talking about the expensive accommodations, and there is coach, and buses and a commuter train system, but I'm getting so old that it's the only way I could probably do it). Anyway, drive your rental car down there, walk in, order your sandwich and wait for it to arrive. It might be nice to eat it there, but you're racing against rush hour traffic, so you probably take it with you, and drive to the park along Ocean Drive in Santa Monica, and eat your breakfast overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Or you go on the pier, if it is open, or to Venice Beach, and eat your breakfast there. It sounds like a great way to arrive, if driving I-10 all the way to Pacific Coast Highway is not an option for you. By the way, do you know whether the I-10 Santa Monica Freeway is crowded headed westbound during morning rush hour? It's probably more crowded headed in, but a lot of people work out there, too.l And what is the best non-freeway road to take between DTLA and Santa Monica or Venice Beach?

Hey Adam! How about that, you were here in Idaho Falls for the Eclipse! Apparently, the whole town booked up almost a year ahead of time. That was a good episode. I watched it at the Train Locomotive Park on the Hill above the Missouri River in Omaha, NE. It wasn’t as good over there. It didn’t get that dark. A guy brought his family. He had a cool cardboard with glass from a Welder’s Mask. It made the Sun Green. Thnx! CJ

Next stop 5 miles due east, to El Tepeyac Cafe (Manuals) on Evergreen Ave, ELA ... This revered joint is the home of the savory Wet Okie Burrito. Also love their deep fried beef Taco's. This place is packed with nostalgia and not much has changed decor wise since they opened (60's). Don't worry, it's safe there.

@@LAFan I knew Manuel, he also drank in Chinatown. What a great man, helped out the Catholic Church across the street and a lot of people who were down and out. Do you remember waitress Peggy, a beautiful morena who worked there for over a decade. How far back do you go. Regards, JP
