Can we just appreciate the insane flight skills these pilots had? Wow. To not crumble under pressure and make decisions like turning off the auto-pilot. I hope they got some sort of medal. They saved 200+lives. Also, RIP to Haruki Ikegami. Very sad, nothing there could have been done :(

Definitely. They had a limited control of the aircraft and even had to use the differential engine power technique to control this heavy 747.

Capt. Jaime Herrera has since passed away, a month after this video was made, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Great pilots, all three -- the 2 pilots bearing the weight of crippled controls and the flight engineer having had to kneel behind the throttles to be able to help control the differential thrust maneuvers.

I've messed around with using differential thrust on a 737 in XP11. It's weird, but with some trial and error I managed to get it set down on a runway. It wasn't pretty, but the chance of surviving it would have been pretty good. This would be an interesting thing to have pilots go over in the simulator since control surface failure isn't unheard of.

I'm glad that this disaster was averted. On the other hand, I thought so much has been changed in terms of security since the Lockerbie incident
@OfftheWallTales
@OfftheWallTales 2 жыл бұрын
Some things were, but it was only reflected in the UK. A bombing in 1988 didn't shake the world like 4 planes, part of the Pentagon and two huge 100+ floor towers shook it. I'm not saying it didn't matter, but other countries likely would've said "oh, our standards work well." Plus small bombings or hijackings weren't common but not unheard of. (In regards to hijackings only, most companies even had the rules of "obey hijackers to get to safety" even after multiple people had taken airplanes under their control across the world.) Also, Lockerbie was 1988. This bombing was 1994. Lockerbie only arrested two people and it took until 1999. The only one convicted took place in 2001 and he was released in 2009. Another big thing is that the US kind of controls the skies. If you want to be allowed to fly over the US, let alone land, you must follow FAA screening procedures. And many similar countries followed suit, resulting in many of the biggest countries forcing the entire market to become safer. I don't think the UK had enough swing to really enforce any huge changes across the globe, until 2001 kind of pointed out deficiencies. EDIT: Also just remembered Boeing is USA made. So it's likely countries were turned down for purchases (likely ordered months or years in advance) unless they changed security. I believe Airbus is owned by 2-3 countries and multiple investors so it would require an EU ban, while Boeing would be really easy for the US to control.

Philippines Airlines PR434 was one of the reasons why my late father decided to retire from PAL 4 years later (health is the other). Plots like that leading to 911 were getting dangerous and he didnt want my sick mom to end up a widow taking care of then 2 teenagers. But he said the attack rattled him to consider retiring. PAL fight attendants (and employees) back then were trained in basic First Aid and critical situations, so kudos to them. Just sharing experience flying PAL and meeting the people working there.

Good thing the idiot bomber failed to notice the different seating arrangement of the plane vs other 747s. It could've been a whole lot worse if he knew. I agree. Boeing 747s are one of the coolest planes ever made.

Idk, based on those other incidents it sounds a lot like it was a bad bomb, all his plots out here failing

Hang on, don’t gloss over the “bomb went off prematurely and he was taken to hospital” bit. How was he not taken into custody? Good vid though.

Kind of weird knowing some of the worlds worst criminals are jailed a few hrs drive from where I live. Great, just great.

10:29 ambulance staff do the same rescue pretending so they can clear body from scene rather than wait for doctor’s declaration at site & minimizing spectator scene trauma.
