I think people are misunderstanding the situation. They aren't shutting down like Alitalia or halting operations like in the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, they filed for Chapter 11 to restructure. They're still going to operate while under Chapter 11 unlike 1997.

I think most airlines are on the verge of bankruptcy. It's just PAL decided to act on it as early as possible.

nahh, Philippines just take the brunt of endless lockdowns and god knows how many quarantine classifications there are. Poor governance overall

I have flown with PAL dozens of times they are fantastic airline with 5* customer service even in economy class.

Most companies that have to resort to Chap 11 emerge stronger and survive. It does usually wipe out the stockholders and Debt Holders to some degree. It's probably good news that PAL is still in good enough financial condition to choose that path. I wish them the best.

Yep. My personal opinion is that so many workers have made PAL A world beater only to be dragged down by dirty money to keep the airline solvent. Nothing new as its happening all around the world.

It was bound to happen. The Philippine government keep changing the rules and causing them to reduce or cancel flights. A company can't make any money like that.

In 2019 All Nippon Airways invested $95 million in PAL. As an equity holder in Bankruptcy you get Jack… Newsflash, almost all carriers are technically insolvent. Access to more debt is not a solution. It just kicks the can down the road. One day they are going to kick the can and it’s not going to move.

Cold Winters: So true! I’ve flown them twice (from San Francisco) - the F/As are very helpful (with no English-speaking issues) and the meals are FULL meals (not just sandwiches typical of US airlines).

My main concern is the Manila to Honolulu route. I’m Filipino and we live on the islands. I have only flown with Hawaiian Airlines and Philippine Airlines. We have a lot of family back in the Philippines that we visit somewhat often. Their service is amazing and I hope to see that they recover.

Well I understand about the chapter 11 filling in new York to trim the dept ,reform and aid the recovery of the airline for the future. My main concern was London to Manila PR721 route was rumoured for change to depart from Paris instead. Please can we keep London route alive even if the frequency of flights are less....

That depends on weather profit comes before people. You'll be surprised how vulnerable Emirates are. The whole airline business all round the world stinks and is in trouble its not just PAL.

Philippines airlines is a private company, headed by Lucio Tan, a cigarrete magnate. The company is under a family run business with the head around 80... 90 years old? Bankruptcy is inevitable. But the “Philippines” aviation industry is far from in trouble. You have Cebu Pacific, one of the most ascending airline companies in all Asia.

I think it’s quite common for an airliner to file for bankruptcy specifically during this time because they got hit hard with this pandemic. Bankruptcy is not technically that bad, in some cases like this one-it will help the company stay afloat.

Australia's second major airline Virgin Australia failed in the pandemic and has been relaunched under new owners. PAL has a market to offer to new owners so it will probably survive in some form.

It's a Filipino Company(State) before but it was under a Chinese-Filipino CEO when the company privatized. Filipino managed the company.

Chapter 11 can be a successful re-launching of a business if the objectives and pre-planning is objectively agreed upon by all parties involved. Most failures are due to lack of communication between the company executives and the investor's group. If properly structured, we should see a smaller airlines going forward with the potential to grow in the future.

Any foreign company which has purchased planes made in the USA, with money loaned from USA banks, and flies international routes to and from multiple cities in the USA is protected by USA laws, bankruptcy laws included.

Great to hear the US is helping. I was surprised the State Department rates the Philippines as the number 1 friendly country to the USA. So have we are lending a helping hand as we did many for all of the US airlines.

Very sad to hear. 3 very young A350s now with Lufthansa. Problem is really with Lucio Tan. PAL explains the pandemic really damaged the airline yet even before the pandemic started they are always reporting losses.

The problem with PAL is mismanagement due to Lucio Tan's control over the company's stocks, when San Miguel Corp led by Ramon Ang is in charge, the PAL's profit grew and became a more worthy airline for non-Filipinos also to travel with. But when Lucio Tan took over, it went back to mismanagement. Another factor aside from the pandemic is the country's heavy reliance on Overseas Filipino Workers' remittance and travel for its economy to prosper. Although the lockdown of global borders due to pandemic left airlines into deep profit loss, most of PAL's main bulk of customers are OFWs and Filipino tourists, when all of them were locked down from their host countries and the rest went back home for good, PAL's profit plummeted because very few Filipinos can travel abroad.

RSA made PAL profitable but service didn’t improve. At least for me. During his time, remember he introduced an all economy class A330 which really sucks because the seat configurations are really bad and there are no IFEs. Literally shoulder to shoulder seating. He leased lots of A340s for no good reason which also put them in bad position. Those A340s also don’t have IFEs even in business class. Problem with LT is he can’t find a way to expand the airline and attract European customers. Qatar, Emirates and Etihad are still kings in attracting customers for flights to Europe to the PH v.v.

It's about time. This is long overdue. PAL hasn't been earning profits for quite sometime now. Is this the most logical way to survive the pandemic? I think so. They have to restructure, cut its fleet to a manageable size & evaluate its route network. It's about survival nowadays. Goodluck PR!

the only thing they have to do(The most sad part) is they need to retire all of there 747 fleet and 777 fleet replace it with few latest long ranged Twin engine airliner that you can found in Airbus. jumbo jet and quad engine planes are not sustainable for the airline industry right now.

@RYAN COO3 PAL doesn't have 747's anymore. It was retired years ago FYI. B777 is way better than Airbus. Airbus maintenance is not cost-effective. Cargo and range are way limited compared to B777.

The planespotters info is too accurate. The 25% fleet cut is based on their original ~100 planes.

unlike europe and north america, travelling in asia, south asia will be remained restrictive for at least another year or two. do expect more airlines to go busted...

Hopefully this will be a wake up call to the Philippine government that lockdown, travel restrictions and barring international travel is not how COVID is going to be defeated. Eventually (if not already) this will trickle down to the average citizen. Plain and simply, tourism is a major part of the Philippine economy and all these regulations is having a bigger impact than the actual virus.

When PAL was controlled by San Miguel Corp, it was the heyday again of the airline. Remember that PAL had 6.5B pesos loan from the gov't under Lucio Tan, he is well known to mismanage PAL even back when Asian Financial Crisis left PAL became bankrupt

Any foreign airline which bought planes made in the USA, with money loaned by USA banks, and serves routes with multiple cities in the USA are protected by laws of the USA, bankruptcy laws included.

I used to work for PAL. Let me tell you, that everything about that airline is TOXIC. You name it: toxic training, harassment, bullying, corruption, favoritism, nepotism, messed up seniority privileges, etc. PAL AND IT'S EMPLOYESS BRING OUT THE WORST IN EVERYONE. Once these harassed and bullied newbies become seniors, they'd reciprocate the bad treatment that they experienced to the new hires. I REFUSED TO BE PART OF THIS VISCIOUS CYLE. AFTER YEARS AND YEARS OF TOXICITY, I LEFT AND MIGRATED. I never looked back. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS AIRLINE IS TOXIC. IT'S DEMISE IS A WELCOME OUTCOME. HOPEFULLY, IT'S WINGS WILL FOREVER BE CLIPPED!!!

I hope they ditch their aging 777-300ERs and A340s and go exclusively with the A350-1000 as an international carrier. Selling theor older assets should give them more capital while they can lease some A350s in the meantime.
