If I was a zillionaire with unlimited money, I can't imagine bothering to get an A380 for exactly this reason. You can only go to a handful of major airports that are already super well served by regularly scheduled flights. You really have to be spending an insane amount of time in the air going between big hubs to have any interest. And just like, spend some more time on the ground, or get a fax machine or something. Frankly, the most practical use for such a private plane would just be in being able to tell people you are the only person with a private plane that big for bragging rights. You never even need to set foot in it.

Weakening structural integrity because you want a chandalier will then result in a new fuselage being redesigned, which will cost billions if not tens of billions -- and that's a hassle/cost that not even rich people want to have the 'pleasure' of dealing with. If they really did have that lax of an attitude when it came to not giving a sh*t about their money, they'd already have luxurious swimming pools, trampoline parks, sports courts, concert halls, and garages in their triple or quadruple-deck airplanes. @hantms3 жыл бұрын
Wait.. the A380's limitation on flying into many airports are primarily because of gate space, multi-level boarding, and also basic economics: a whole lot of passengers wanting to go between the points it serves. That does not apply to private or government use: as long as it has a runway that's long enough then you get to park the thing anywhere way out on left field, you don't need a passenger gate anyway. So that leaves only airports that are truly cramped for space as problematic, but most places you could fly to. (The A380 needs a shorter runway length than the 747) And someone who buys an A380 probably already has a couple smaller business jets for shorter hops into small airports with fewer people.

More parts too...
@markdoldon88523 жыл бұрын
I'm amused by the analysts that look at "why did the 380 fail" but who fail to understand that FROM THE START Boeing realized they needed a freight version, so designed a plane to be easily convertible. I dont think it was prescience on their part, they just didn't believe they'd sell enough pure passenger jumbo. This has allowed an active freight (both built for use and secondary) for the 747, a significant driver of 747 sales over the years. By choosing to NOT offer an A380-F, even as an efficient retrofit, Airbus crippled the planes resale value, which just adds one more nail in the coffin. Why buy a 380 with almost no resale, when you can buy a 747 that can easily be sold on to cargo use? Airbus didn't JUST misread the passenger market, they grossly misread what was already a massively growing cargo market.
@jeebus62633 жыл бұрын
@@markdoldon8852 you're probably right about resale value, I'm not sure that was obvious 10yr ago. I've often thought they need 777 wings on both 747 and 380s... dual large engine folding wingtips etc. It's still possible someone will do some useful mods to them. The 747 was originally designed exclusively as a freighter, back when they expected the sst to be the future of passenger transport.
@markdoldon88523 жыл бұрын
@@jeebus6263 no, the 747 in its eventual format was originally designed specifically for Pan Am. Did Boeing have freight concepts kicking around that gave them a starting point? Probably, but the project went nowhere until Pan Am said "build us a jumbo and we'll buy it" Boeing DID consider that they needed a freight version if they wanted it to be successful. It drove a lot of their design decisions, such as placing the cockpit on the upper level, leaving room for a ground level loading door. But everything I've ever seen published emphasizes that the design was originated as a passenger plane. As for refitting either of todays jumbos with different wings and twin engines, that is effectively a complete redesign. It's not something any conversion company can handle, it's a new design starting virtually from scratch. Boeing or Airbus woukd need to dedicate tens of billions, most of a decade on a new aircraft. It wouldn't make any sense in marketing terms unless there is a demand. In terms of Airbus, it wouldn't solve any of the existing reasons why their plane is not optimized for cargo. Might Boeing find a market argument for a 747 sized twin? They already looked at that, and the first 777-9 will start rolling out in the next years or so. They have slightly less passenger capacity, significantly MORE cargo space although without the front loading door of the 747-F which the largest cargo users like.

Hi I think another good use for the A 380 is to convert one as a hospital operation to country that don't have medical facilities for serton treatment. Brendan IRL

It’s size makes operations to many airports difficult, for such a task there could be a better fitting aircraft

I could see the possibility of maybe the A380 being button up by a few companies that do international cargo delivery
@spongebubatz3 жыл бұрын
That was already discussed before, unfortunately the A380 is a horrible freighter

The problem is that the 747 was DESIGNED to include a cargo version. That allows a relatively cheap conversion to allow the nose of the plane to open up for excellent access to loading. (That's why the cockpit of the 747 is on the upper deck, the door opens below it) An entire 747 can be emptied and loaded with new containers very rapidly. With the 380, no such provision was made. It's much more expensive to modify for cargo, and while max cargo WEIGHT is higher than a 747, in practical terms only the lower deck would be used which is slightly smaller than the usable space on 747. Less space on a significantly more expensive plane to operate, with limited airport restrictions. Throw in the massive built up infrastructure for 747 cargo, including spare parts etc, and it just doesn't make sense to convert 380s for cargo except maybe in unique situations.. Cheaper, easier, more efficient, more flexible to simply use the industry workhorse.

The A380 is a very good cargo plane. IMHO.

I was trying to think of ways to make larger windows in a pressurized fuselage without compromising the structural integrity. Then I started wondering if it would be easier to create entire sections of fuselage from the lightest transparent plastic or glass or whatever nanotech composite and then use paint to create opaque parts and clear "windows" of any shape, in any configuration along that ring of the fuselage. So, I wonder if that could be a thing or not.

It is now 16.12.2021 and frr what I know BA is still flying the A-380s and is said to do so at least in the summer of 2022. I an tired of these videos shaming and devastating aviation enthusiasts that they are as of this date (now0 fully retired from commerial service around the world that i already have missed out on my chance to fly in one! Please stop trying to draw the future as the present. I hope to fly in one in January of 2022 on Speedbird (Brit Air).

The limited access to airports and the associated facilities would be a deal breaker for me on a private A380, would just be far too much of a hassle and a restriction.

The early 1900's saw equivalent luxury in the transcontinental railroad catering the the rich and powerful minus the hi-tech. Wireless telegrams were the cutting edge of technology.

There actually was one order for an A380 business jet, and it had quite the interior planned. However, the Saudi prince who ordered it sold the plane to Emirates before it was delivered

You can order a taxi and go anywhere mostly. You can order a tuktuk to get to even tighter places. If you’re a private buyer then you’re more interested in getting directly from point to point, you need a taxi or a much smaller, more efficient and more flexible aircraft. The A380 is like a coach for one person to a destination that is has windy hairpin bends. It’s impractical, inefficient, and in most cases simply not possible. Grandeur means nothing when you can’t use it in a practical manner. Smaller in this case is by far better for everyone.

If you can afford to buy and configure an A380, you're also likely to be able to afford to construct the necessary infrastructure on a private island somewhere to accommodate your toy. If you have additional homes or offices in major cities, landing the A380 shouldn't be much of an issue.
@GintaPPE10003 жыл бұрын
Not the private sector, but these low prices might tip the economics of A380 freighters to be more favorable. Especially when you consider the surges in e-commerce and slowdowns at international ports - there may be corridors where even point-to-point cargo volume is sufficient to warrant the use of one.
@spongebubatz3 жыл бұрын
Just because the A380 is big does not mean that the payload it can carry is great. The A380 is a bad freighter. Period. The price to obtain one wasn’t the issue. Also, it lacks features like a big enough loading door and even if the upper deck could be used for cargo, finding a loader that can reach that high while still having the needed stability is hard

Only two potential customers - one is building starships, so not interested. The other is still working on his hollowed out volcano lair, so not interested, but is willing to talk if you can get him some sharks with laser beams on their heads...

Why would you need a plane that big. Even a 777x is huge for a private jet.

There is a private A380 it's owned by a oil shake....."The world's most expensive private jet belongs to Prince Alwaleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia who owns an Airbus A380 with a price tag of over 500 million USD. ... Been there; done that. All of those amenities were available in the early 747s (in the 1970s and 80s) where they even installed a baby grand piano. There's nothing new about these for the A380.
