Philippine Airlines has a Manila to Vancouver route, so I'm surprised it took Air Canada this long to set their own flight up between the two cities.

There’s no debate for me. On trips back to 🇵🇭 , I’d rather invest a little extra time and take one of the other Asian carriers , including a stop over to break up the long flights. The Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, Singapore airlines are all a CLEAR step above the aforementioned carriers .

This is the comment. North American carriers are GARBAGE. It couldn’t be more black and white. I’ve recently flown on CX after years and was very disappointed. But it was still better than flying AC, AA or UA, all of whom are embarrassments.

I agree to some extent. I will say there is one thing truly unique to Philippine Airlines and that is their people. Every time I step on on PAL flight, I already feel like I've arrived in the Philippines. The warm hospitality from its flight attendants is something I can't find elsewhere. What PAL lacks from its competitors is definitly its hard product. It would be nice to have private business class pods/suites, improve bedding, more robust wifi, and food could also be improved.

We do not usually use PAL because of its subpar service unless there are no other choice. Thanks to United Airlines and Air Canada. we now have more choices.

PAL has a habit of cancelling planes more often. One time PAL postponed my flight due to overbooking. They did not give me any rewards for the inconvenience. But whenever I would make changes in my flight, they charged $200. Never will I fly PAL for my transpacific flights. Also, PAL's business class on their 777 is way below far compared to other Asian airlines.

Air France 🇫🇷 has recently returned to the Philippines last December 08 with 3 weekly direct nonstop flights between Manila and Paris Charles de Gaulle, PAL doesn't have a flights to Europe 🇪🇺.

Air Canada should improve their On-time flight departures,mostly delayed flight, and change of plane.My sister's flight YYZ to LAX, was delayed then change of plane, they have to go from Term.1 to 3.

Air Canada flights are always delayed. Due to this delay, I almost missed my connecting flight to Manila because it was already the final boarding call. I made it just in time, however upon disembarking at my destination, and just about to get my checked in luggages, I found out that they were left behind in Vancouver. What a nightmare...

I remember talking to Air Canada executive 4 years ago, I was asking why don't have a direct flight from Toronto to Manila. The response was, that's actually a good idea, but it may take time to come into fruition.

The problem here is straightforward Philippine Airlines up against Star Alliance North America UA/AC. FYI Air Canada and United Airlines can actually reroute you onto their Five Star top 10 Skytrax East Asian partners SQ BR NH OZ when needed. That is a disadvantage of Philippine Airlines they are not in an airline alliance but its competitors are in one. During the Spring to early Fall UA189 is operated as the 8:15pm EWR Terminal C to Manila Terminal 3 via SFO. Get the one segment of the delayed the good news is UA will put you on these reroutes BR7/261 NH7/819 SQ33/910 & OZ211/703 or OZ215/701

PR has the codeshare with American for connections via Tokyo for MNL and CEB. Had a recent flight from Tokyo and there was some folks connecting. They need to work with them to enhance that partnership.

@FlightsInAsia I see it now and if you were trying to do it on American Airlines most of the foreign Travelers know that Philippine Airlines has a poor service. That's why AA reroute option to MNL puts JL/CX on priority since they are the Oneworld Alliance East Asian Skytrax top 10 rated partners of AA. If your side by side Philippine Airlines and Cathay Mainline models you'll realise that CX version of the same PR planes have the better product and highly prioritized by AA as Oneworld Alliance reroute to MNL. On my earlier comment it's the United Airlines/Air Canada Star Alliance version. If we add DL here it's always KE/CI first and then 🇨🇳 MU/MF 🇻🇳VN for MNL on Skyteam Alliance. Those were based on my parents experience using Star Alliance reroute to MNL from delayed UA flight EWR-LAX-HND-MNL.

@Mel-hm1mj you are correct sadly all three alliances have an airline in East Asia that is a rival to Philippine Airlines Oneworld easy due to CX having the same Fleet as PR and veto them over Proximity to HKG. Despite the Codeshare to AA. Star Alliance TG holds the veto vote despite partnership to NH Skyteam Alliance KE holds the veto vote despite PR codeshares on GA and VN.

I can see Delta returning to the PH. American - not sure how they are doing with their codeshare with PR or any plans to do more trans-Pacific. AA is limited on their Asia services to Japan, China, and Korea.

The only advantage that Philippine airlines and air Canada is the non stop flight. Canadian personnel are horrible. Philippine airlines cabins are too packed and they are always late. I prefer the other Asian airlines but the only disadvantage is the long layover before the final flight to Manila.

Once NMIA opens, I think this will lead to more international airports worldwide getting non-stop flights serving the Philippines. I also think Philippine Airlines should have at least one non-stop flight with a further non-stop distance than New York JFK. I think Washington Dulles and Atlanta would most likely be the contenders for non-stop Philippine Airlines flights with the longer non-stop flight distance than JFK.

They say Toronto has a larger pool of pinoys than Vancouver, something that surprises me given that the US West Coast has a larger pool of pinoys than the US East Coast. Yet there is enough traffic to mount multiple flights a week to Toronto and New York (or Chicago). I feel that with PAL cutting its A359s by 2/3s, it was a strategic mistake and we are seeing the consequences of it pan out today with their failure to expand ultra long-haul frequencies. Therefore, United and Air Canada have an opportunity fill that vacuum and fly to the East Coast. They don't have to do it everyday. What could they be waiting for?

I am assuming UA and AC have higher priority market especially trans-Atlantic where the aircraft needed for MNL from say Toronto could be used on a route to say London or Paris. PR's orders for the A350-1000s can't come soon enough.

I would too. I mean I heard (though not sure if it is true) that more pinoys live in the Toronto metro than Vancouver metro. Plus with PAL's shortage of ultra long-haul aircraft, they have left a vacuum that Air Canada needs to fill.

Or Air Canada flight should be Toronto via Vancouver to Manila then Manila Vancouver via Toronto. Before the Covid Philippine Airlines have a direct flight Toronto direct to Manila every day and always fully booked,They also have that Toronto via Vancouver to Manila before Covid. Cathay Facific has a flight Toronto via Alaska to Hongkong then Manila.

As someone who does fly PR regularly, even I would say it since the interiors on their aircraft are inconsistent. I do appreciate their food and the wi-fi entertainment system they have on the A321s. Contrast to the likes of JAL, ANA, or Singapore Air - a consistent cabin product especially in Economy - is what PR needs to become a 5-star carrier.

Competition is a positive thing. I am both an Aeroplan & Mabuhay Miles rewards holder. Good Luck to Air Canada with all their baggage fees while PAL has generous baggage allowance so we will see, but my mom is set to just fly via PAL 😉To have option as to departure days & time is a plus. Also AC has so many issues about luggage misplaced, missing, delayed, lost etc hopefully with this direct flight that would be avoided.

That’s exactly what I am thinking about - baggage fees. I hope they studied how Filipinos travel before launching their expansion flights to Manila. Filipinos will choose the carrier that allows them to maximize the two-23kgs luggage + a carry-on allowance inclusive of their ticket. Air Canada, on the other hand, will squeeze every penny from passengers in terms of baggage fees. Let’s hope CA will survive the competition.

@NayNay-i9z get one of the Pacific flights canceled the good news is that AC/UA will reroute you using Star Alliance partners like BR,NH,CA,OZ,SQ for most they'll ask for the 5 star top 10 rated BR,NH & SQ reroute to MNL from YVR/SFO. AC17 YYZ-MNL via YVR YVR-MNL leg can be BR9/271 via TPE. SFO versions are NH107/869 成田国際空港 NH7/819 BR17/27/7 to 271/261 via TPE OZ211/215 to OZ703/701 via ICN.

Air Canada Cons based on my experience: Their ground stewards most of the time are not fully informed of the operations of their Airline. When my wife went to San Francisco the AC ground stewards said that she has to get her check in baggage from Vancouver while United Airlines said she will get her check in baggage from her final destination. Guess who is telling the truth? United Airlines. Flight stewardess of AC are usually old, fat and rude. I asked for help one time to put my carry in luggage bin. She just ignored me. Their food is bland. The content of my check in luggage was damage in spite of the fragile sticker attached on it. Air Canada did not compensate me on the damage item. Air Canada is not really good in treating visible minorities. Philippine Air Lines con: Their ground stewards has no system in attending the giving of boarding pass. In September I boarded Philippine Airlines it was stated that 2 meals and a snack will be given to passenger. Only 2 meals where given no snacks were served. Their service is so limited because they don't belong to any alliance airlines. Only one check in bag is allowed and they are also very strict in their carry in bag. Let us see who will dominate on these two not so respectable Airlines.
