It was time to put the Philips Airfryer and T-fal ActiFry to the test. I made chicken wings in both Air Fryers to see which one would come out on top + Bonus Sauce Included!

Two different air fryers came with two different instructions on temp and time. I followed the instruction for each respectively. If I bought one, I would follow the instructions for that one. I don’t think it would be a fair comparison cooking the wings at the same temp and time for both air fryers. What do you think?

Phillips has a rack that you can put in the basket. It allows you to cook two layers at the same time. I've found that it helps crisp things up, because the contents aren't stacked right on top of each other.

Great video, as always! Something I don’t get, though: early on in the video you mention that neither of these two machines contains instructions for cooking chicken wings. But then you emphasize that “you follow the instructions” for each machine. Where did you find those instructions?

Something doesn’t seem right. When comparing two (or more) products, shouldn’t everything be equal in order to see which one is better. You had one at 400° for 25 minutes and one at 350° for 15 minutes. I wouldn’t think they would come out the same at all.

I bought the Tefal ActiFry model featured in this video, UK price £179.00, and use it more than I do my oven. To clarify a couple of points here; The paddle can be removed for cooking however the food will not rotate, that said using it this way is perfect for crisping baked potatoes (once they have been in the steamer). The paddle does need to be inserted if you intend to use the top shelf in the model featured in this video. The two buttons to release the lid don't need to be pressed simultaneously to open the lid, just press one button. I have no regrets in buying mine, its been an absolute godsend!! We cook a variety of food in it, chicken breasts, burgers, you can even make pasta dishes in the bottom bowl!! Oh and when cooking boned chicken don't forget to perform a doneness test....!!!

I have been watching a lot of air fryer video's and I find that I am liking the Delonghi air fryer and multicooker. I am thinking about purchasing it because of all the things that you can do with it. it also comes with the paddle which can be removed and you then have a flat surface to use if you want to bake cinnamon rolls or make a pizza etc. adjustable tempature also. I do enjoy your video;s.

Hello, once again. I'm not big on chicken wings however, I have prepared chicken fingers in my Philips AF. May I suggest that after seasoning your chicken and adding the coating, whether it's cornstarch, flour, or egg washed and coated with Panko breadcrumbs, that you give it a light spritz of olive oil, just to lightly coat the chicken before air frying. Also, when I cooked my chicken fingers with the Panko breading, I started the temp off at 350 for the first half, paused the AF to check my chicken, and then cranked up the temp to 375 or maybe 400 just to get some nice browning all around. Also, you may want to toss your chicken wings in the basket midway through the cooking process and cranking up the heat, as I did, to ensure more even and darker browning. Enjoyed watching this interesting comparison AF test you conducted here, and BTW, the chicken wings really looked good. Love the sauce you prepared for your wings--that's a "keeper" recipe for me. Keep up the great videos. Good work!

The air fryer have a rack where you can put more food in it without stacking it like that which will allow proper cooking.you put one later of wings , put the rack, then put another layer of wings. My mom used it the other day, the wings turn out super delicious and moist. Almost if she had bbq grill the wings. I think you should test them again.

I always do my wings for 16mins in the Te-fal and they come out very juicy but cooked. I've also tried done 20mins and they were noticeably tougher. It could also depend on if they've been marinaded/seasoned to how the meat turns out.

You can use only bottom pan on T-fal to cook directly, but you must then turn midway, like you need to do with drawer type air fryers. Pizza reheats excellently too, but you can't have big slices, must cut them to size, which is more inconvenient than on drawer air fryers..

I do my wings for at least 20 minutes in the Philips. Usually 22, at 350. I don't stack em, and I flip em at, like 10 minutes.This is kinda apples and oranges with the time/temps, I think you just said that, ha. I haven't heard that the Tfal does 400 degrees. More like 360, maybe I have some incorrect info, or the US machine is different. Dunno. Nice to see these machines at work, tho. Thanks!

I don't know about cornstarch as a chicken coating. It does get more crispy but it doesn't stick right (no gluten). Try 3 parts all purpose wheat flour to I part fine rice flour. You get a perfect combo of adhesion and crispiness.

Some Sombal Olek would probably do well in that sauce for some heat. I just received a Rosewill brand XL Air Fryer not more than 2 hours ago from mail order. It is a Philips knock off. My guess is they are even made in the same plant in China. The Philips are ~$200 USD and up. The Rosewill was less. The Philips you show has digital controls while the Rosewill has knobs and an analog timer for the power. Let's see how durable these are. Many products these days are designed to fail so another is purchased. Please keep doing recipes so I can compare end result quality against the Rosewill. I plan on testing mine using frozen tater tots without additional oil since they are par-fried at the manufacture. Also some home made tortilla chips using Mission brand yellow corn tortillas. I will lightly brush the tortillas with some vegetable oil for the fry. I will also be using a stainless steel modular rack system I bought for Sous Vide to space layers of tortillas to see if it can increase the volume cooked. I use the rack system in my pressure cooker, electric smoker, and again the Sous Vide. It's a multi-tasker. I won't link the rack system because it's bad form to post shopping links in other people's YT comment sections. But if you follows Flo's Amazon links and copy/paste below in the Amazon search bar I assume she will still get credit for it. LIPAVI Sous Vide Rack-Model L10- Marine Quality 316L Stainless Steel

I am an engineer that loves to cook. To make tge Tfal equal to the Philips you need to find out the air flow for each from tbeir specs. So tge equation Airflow x Temperature x Time must be equal for both.Else you are spending different cooking energies and the comparison is not valid.

I completely understand why you used different temps and times ie you were merely following the directions for each machine but it really made it hard to compare which machine performs better. I feel like you need to do several trials to be more accurate. You should do one where times and temps are the same as well as after getting to know each machine using the time and temp that you felt worked optimally for each one using chicken wings each time.

I think the Phillips at 350 is still more powerful as it circulated the air like convection ovens. And the TFal circulates the food but the air doesn’t seem as powerful, maybe why they cook at different temps?
@joeworden825

You are probably right. I have a induction cook-top with a convection oven, which I hate. When it converts a baking recipe, it lowers the temp. The food just does get as crispy at the reduced temp/time. I end up cooking for a longer period. Grrr!

So, I don’t have an air fryer. I use the oven but I’m sure this applies to both. If you want crispy wings, steam them first. That renders the fat out of them before you fry. Perfect every time.
@magicman421
@magicman421 5 жыл бұрын
I think that the ones sitting in the T-fal are getting soggy from the steam, you have to open them up or dump them out to preserve 'crispiness.' Also, the comments about different times and temps are also valid. There has to be a middle ground with the parameters. Further testing is required. Luckily, it's a delicious task. Lol.

Another thing I found out was on the "base" model you can't shut off the timer when you like how done the food is. I just unplugged the unit instead. Just another draw back of the base unit. Cooking surface is small although deep. And the base model which is analogue. The handle that you lift with is not detachable. So if hand washing it's awkward.
@toner37
@toner37 5 жыл бұрын
I did purchase the Philips one. Tried some frozen chicken apps and I could see how much more juicy they were after the fact. Then tried some frozen chicken and beef patties as well. The base model which is analogue had a very small basket. I wasn't a fan of the mesh grill as the patties would stick to it. You would think for the price point this would be a non-stick cooking area. In the end the one beef patty had a smell/taste that was off. I'm thinking it was from the unit. So in the end it was not worthy of keeping. Small cooking area couldn't allow for more than one burger. And the at that price point the mesh grill could have been of better quality and non-stick. Returning mine sadly. And that mesh grill looks cheap and is not easy to clean as the wires are so thin.

I like the way the T-Fal paddle turns the chicken...no need to stop and mix. Perhaps a few minutes off the time for the T-Fal unit would not be as dry? All about trying and slight modifications for both. The Philips needed more time than indicated in the recipe booklet...plus flipping the wings. The T-Fal needs a couple of minutes less cooking time than indicated in the booklet. That's what I learned from this video. Thanks for posting...

Wasn’t it 2 different temps and times: 400 degrees at 25 min on the T-FAL. 350 degrees at 20 min on the Philips? How about the same test again with the same time and temp. Maybe 350 degrees for 20 min turning chicken 1/2 way thru the cooking time. This time and temp format seemed to produce a juicier yet crispy wing. For the sauce..yum but, soy sauce requires a lot more sweetness to balance all that salt and I do put red pepper flakes in my sauce for a little heat. GOOD JOB!

Regardless of the instructions. 400 degrees should be the same temperature for any oven. So I would think you would use the same temp and time for both Key to a good chicken wing is fry the hell out of them then toss with sauce immediately

I have the tefal actifry original with 1 kg capacity. Here in Egypt the tefal is cheaper than the philips which has 800 gms of capacity. It's "wider" than the philips which is "deeper", & that makes it better when frying chicken tenders for instance (without the paddle), yet you cannot roast a whole chicken in it because of that wider design & the center opening as well. Also tefal is easier to clean. Tefal is not as versatile as philips of course. You cannot adjust temperature so you won't be able to bake in it like the Philips. It's just an on/off button, but that (& the paddle of course) make it easier for my hubby to use especially when it comes to french fries 😎

"if I was baking them in the oven I would use flour" you are baking them in the oven, an air fryer is just a small convection oven, exactly the same technology

I understand the concept of you following the instructions on the manuals in terms of temp and time, but that is not exactly comparable. Also the Phillips seemed much more overcrowded (with no turning as the instructions in the manual) meaning the overall temperature per wing is also not comparable. THEN you turned on the Phillips for 15 mins after turning on the T-fal for 25 mins, leaving the Phillips to cool down inside the confines of the fryer to ruin the crispy skin.

Cilantro tastes like soap to me. I think to have a fair test both machines should be set to the same temp for the same amount of time. The T-Fal probably dried out because of the higher temp/longer cook time. Maybe take off 5 min. JMHO.

I think the wing from the Phillips would have been crisper if you would have cooked it longer than 15 minutes.

Flo, it's important to turn your food half way through in the Philips to get consistent cooking/browning. (Shaking doesn't work.) That sauce looks absolutely delicious, but I'm no fan of cilantro. Thanks, looking forward to the next video. :)

The reason why the Philips airfryer didn't work as well you ran it on to Lola powerheat you should have run it for 400 minute 400 degrees for 20 minutes instead of 350 it would have come out crispier and it would have been brown or with less time than the other you ran the other one at 400 degrees for 25 minutes and that's why it was Browner I thought everybody knew that it doesn't matter what air fryer you have everything's better at 400 degrees wow

4:00. 13 minutes at 350 might be about just right. I found my traditional 300+ consistent oil filled pan frying wings to be perfect at 15 to 17 minutes covering all sides to be absolutely perfect. I don't do soggy wings ( Dominos Pizza does though). If they don't have a "crackle" when I poke it with a fork..It's not done and crispy enough. I do mine like the restaurant/bar Buffalo wild Wings...Crispy...THEN sauce them. No baking..no broiling at you won't get them crispy enough. I don't do batter with them either. 10:11. eh..NOPE...not crispy enough and at around 30 minute...sorry..but both of these fail my tests. (sigh)
