I’m happy to inform you that you have earned a special award from the “Venerable Order of European Tube Radio Restorers”, the medal for bravery awarded to those who dare to open up the FM front-end. In fact, you will get two of these medals as you actually replaced an inductor, with no regard for your own safety (sanity), and therefore deserve a special place of honour in our Order. LOL, yes, I'm also struggling with the FM front-ends, as I try to re-align them from the Eastern-European OIRT FM band (65-74MHz), to the regular CCIR band. It's usually not hard with solid state tuners, but these tube FM front-ends with variometer tuning are really painful to realign, because it needs drastic change in the number of turns on the coil formers of the variometer, and the original wire is usually melted into the brittle plastic coil former with solvent. I kinda gave up with some models, and just use converters on the antenna input, but it's not perfect because the 20MHz wide CCIR band obviously doesn't fit into the 9MHz wide OIRT band...

Very nice compliment coming from one of my favorite radio repair channels, the other would be the man your complimenting. You both take a lot of pride in your work and both have superb knowledge. There are so many radio destruction channels on here it’s always a treat when you two do repairs and restoration the right way. You guys, Mr. Carlson, W2aew, Glasslinger and Shango066 are about the only people I watch that have given good educational videos on radio repairs. I mainly restore and rebuild old tube guitar amps but do a radio now and then. When I am not sure I turn on one of your channels and usually find what I need. Thanks to all of you guys!

David has been a great job. Thanks. My father paid his four months' salary to buy PHILIPS radio in 1963. These are very valuable. For that money today you can buy five or six LED TVs. This radio is my age. and adorn my house.

Hello David. Another great restoration that looks and sounds superb. Philips made some great radios back in the day. A very good repair on the FM tuner. I have heard of Rose metal before( used years ago by plumbers to assist with bending of metal pipes) but I've no practical experience with it myself. The cabinet came out well and looks superb. You seem to have a couple of "Oldies" stations there in Australia. Most of our US AM is either talk radio or religious. I miss the top 40 AM and FM stations we used to have. Now streaming seems to be the only way to get that kind of music. Impressive job! You never cease to amaze me with your restoration skills.

Ended up looking and sounding superb! The wood refinishing was well worth the extra effort. Very brave and resourceful save of the FM front end, a repair that would send many running for the hills, screaming! This sort of work is made all the more impressive when you say you've not been restoring radios for very long. All I can say is you've taken to it like a duck to water!

Beautiful! And the radio looks good too! Good to know that rose metal solder is not made of the same metals used in rose gold wedding bands. My favorite part is always the cabinet restoration and she looks fantastic. The automotive clear brought it up a perla. And she sounds really good for just being a mono set with two speakers. I'm always amazed that these objects survive for so long and then find themselves in the hands of a restorer. I've got a very early Sanyo Betacord in my wardrobe, still in pristine and working condition. I mean, who the heck would want a Beta VCR ? But I can't bear to chuck it. Who knows, one day it might end up in someone's hands as a valuable antique. Well, maybe not. But I guess that's how some of these things manage to survive for decades.

Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant Dave. What more can I say other than, “An outstandingly stupendous job!” Seeing you recreate the mains transformer thermal protection brought back a memory of a time sometime during 1972 (I’d have been aged 18 at the very end of that year). Televisions, especially colour, incorporated a number of ‘fuseable’ power resistors. Being the wire wound types, they had a spring contact that was held in the contact position with Rose’s alloy. Being a young lad at the time learning radio and television servicing, I had repaired a colour television and was about to refit its rear cover when an older qualified service tech stopped me. He’d seen me re-solder the open contact on a ‘fuseable’ resistor with ordinary solder. It was that moment I learned about the existence of Rose’s alloy, its constituent metals, and how to apply it. He went on to inform me there was a strong possibility the television would not make a full evening’s viewing for the customer before the soldered joint would melt, therefore re-opening the resistor’s spring contact. That of course would have necessitated the TV be brought back into the workshop for retention. It was then I was handed a chunky coil of Rose’s alloy, and then asked to remove the ordinary solder from the resistor spring contact, and replace it with Rose’s alloy. The joint is slightly darker than ordinary solder. Doubtful many Vintage Radio restorers, and electronics service techs of these days will have heard of Rose’s alloy. Nonetheless it adds another interesting aspect to the hobby of antique radio restoration. All the best from Phil.

Hi Phil, thank you. That's an interesting story of experience being passed on to the younger generation. Been there and done that from both aspects. I don't quite understand why the solder would melt before the Rose's alloy, I would have thought the solder would have a higher melting point than the Rose's alloy which melts at about 100C. Either way the overheat switch was an interesting mini project in this radios repair, I think a lot of us learnt something that might be of use in the future. Rose metal is new for me too, likely new to many of your followers. I have run across the fiberglass resin finish on the wood dashboard of sports cars back years ago, as well as the wooden door panels on American luxury cars of about the same period. Neat how you figured it out, i think i had to learn the hard way, sanding and sanding to finally get to the wood.

Hi Jeff, I found the Rose metal intriguing and it wasn't plentiful either. I did a lot of searching to find low melt solders but none were 100C like Rose metal. The Ukraine was the only place I could get some. Resin on car dashboards and door panels, that makes sense. I would have thought normal fibreglass resin would have a greenish tinge, there are resins used for casting which are clear but I think that was a later development. As soon as I started sanding it I knew it was resin or I would still be sanding 😀

I now have the big brother of that one . Philips Reverbeo . Fantastic radio but a nightmare to restore . They use the weird 800 ohm speakers. Had to replace one with a normal type and alter the circuit and OPT .

Hi Mack, I was very flattered that Manuel was so kind, he is a radio god in my view. BBQ sauce recipe: 1 cup tomato ketchup 2 tbs maple syrup or honey 2 tsp chilli and garlic sauce Place ingredients into a small saucepan and simmer for two minutes and allow to cool. Excellent, educational, and entertaining!. In the US, timber means wood used for construction - like the word lumber. Lumberjacks also purportedly yell Timber! as a cut tree is falling. In my experience timber is used in reference to large pieces of wood - like a beam or a rafter. We would never use the word timber to refer to small pieces of wood - at least in the area where I live - Michigan\Wisconsin. I'm always amused how English varies throughout the world.

Thanks Nickolas, I was lucky with the coil that it worked first time. The dial light reflector is aluminium, I cleaned it but no need to polish it, it wouldn't have been polished originally 🙂

Good work on a nice unit. One comment though. Those tube capacitors you pulled out are extremely reliable and often hand picked. No need to replace them unless you are sure they have failed. If you do replace them you might have to go back and check how the substitutes perform. Mr Carlson has a video about them if you want more detail.

As for the diffusion plastic, Have a look at a defunct lcd television as they have several sheets built in to the panel behind the lcd structure to even out the light it may come in handy one day. Hi again Dave. It happens that I am working right now on a Telefunken "Undine" (similar to a "Zeesen" model) from 1938. It has, I think, the original thermal protection (maybe from that Rose Metal) on the power transformer. It was called Thermosicherung on the parts list. If you want, I can send some pictures of it. Beautiful job, and lovely-looking (and sounding) radio. I'd never heard of "Rose / Rose's metal." Interesting uses (when I looked it up) like filling a copper plumbing pipe with it and then being able to bend the pipe without the pipe crimping (and without using a pipe-bending tool). Always something new to learn. Surprising you had to go to Ukraine to find some! The only downside . . . the apocalyptically-depressing news beaming out on every radio channel . . . although it sounded as though at least the cricket was on track with India collapsing. Really entertaining, David. Thank you. Oh, and loved the video "coda" . . . . !

Thanks Mike. I had to do a lot of investigating to get info on the transformer link and then to Rose metal which I had never heard of. The Ukraine was the only place I could find selling it. You are right about the news and India beat us in the end 🙄😀

As always, a great restoration and opportunity to learn. With regard to that white plastic backer, you might give look at Plasticard sheet styrene. It comes in various thicknesses and might also be useful for making up small bits as it is often used by model makers.

Thanks 1959Berre. I hadn't heard of Rose metal either, I saw a passing reference to it a few weeks before on another channel and investigated it a bit further. I was told as a kid wood is what you use to make timber or throw on the fire. Timber is used to craft furniture, I guess it stuck 😄 Interesting timmerman means woodworker 🙂

It's probably the same root as the German "Zimmermann", which specifically means "framing carpenter". Writing that makes me wonder how the German "Zimmer" (room) is related to that or whether it's just a coincidence. Some languages really like to differentiate between various grades of cut-down trees, others don't. In German, it's "Holz", regardless of whether it's still growing, cut down on the ground in big logs, split into firewood or cut into boards, beams or veneers. Any further specification is by compounding, e.g. "Brennholz" (firewood) or "Bauholz" (framing timber).

Can't say I've ever come across fibreglass resin as a finish on a radio. Very nice work on the fusible link. Apart from the touch hazard, such links are a better idea than a regular fuse in the primary as you can run a secondary red in the face without necessary drawing sufficient current through the primary to blow a fuse -- hence today's thermal fuses, albeit not as easily replaced.

Roll Royce have been using on their dashboards for a long time. It can be flattened and polished to a mirror finish which doesn't sink into the grain over time. It turns up in many places as a finish.

I always find it amazing how different the radios look after your restoration. Looks beautiful and sounds smashing :-D It reminds me of the grundig valve radios with the piano keys. It's a shame that grundig is no more, it's also a shame that companys use the good name of grundig to sell crap :-(

Thanks Wayne. The top came up very well. Different standard for grading the sandpaper between the two. They are about the same up to about 240 grit before the European starts to move ahead of the US. I think 1000 grit US is about 2000 in the European standard. European paper has a 'P' in front of the number, so P 240, P800 etc. Who knows why 🙄 The next project is an ordinary Aussie radio 😏
