@@MRoesterreicher1 Just bought the X1. Treble sounded aggressive and less control mashed up all together in the sound presentation. Bass is more towards the thin punchy side of things with tiny bit roll off while sub bass roll off expected with an open back. Again, signature is aggressive and warm/bassy specific type of sound. Its pretty good for its time and now there are better alternative. However, X1 still good for specific type of people who love the aggressive treble tuning with width staging. It has less metallic timbre compare to the X2 that I prefer. Punchy bass but less control in overall tightness.

Folks in the UK who can't ship VModa cables can buy the Fisual S-Flex Mini from Amazon UK at up to £13 for a 3 metre length. I find it a very nice cable and the build quality is great. very flexible and can be curled and tucked around a desk or chair without snagging or tangling. The jacks are silver and small too so won't get caught in stuff.

I recently got these, and Fidelio X1 is truly impressive for its price. I would maybe put them above both classics from Sennheiser HD 650 and HD 600. Like Tyll, I too enjoy Audeze LCD-2 and LCD-3. I believe X1 will become a huge success! They have so many qualities, and they look hotter than hot! :D

A very helpful review. It's difficult to decide whether headphones reviewed by the Hifi press are to your own taste, and it is also difficult to find dealers with these on display. I will have to search through your videos for reviews on other headphones. Many Thanks !

The V-Moda is more uneven and closed in sounding, but it hits harder in the bass. The X1 is more even, open, and spacious sounding, but is just a little soft in the mid and low bass.

It's been now over 8 years since Tyll made this video...I just want to let all you know i have those X1 for all these years now .. as for the durability and reliability my phones have stood the test of time.. Ear cushions are still in great shape and amazingly so are the phones and its original cable.. is still my fav Phones to use for critical listing.. at times i do prefer the X1 sound signature over my Stax SRM-1 tube amp and the lambda signature headset..Suppose that does says allot for the sound quality of both those X1 and X2 series Philips phones in my book..

I would recommend the Sennheiser hd600 at this price range. They scale up really well and can surprisingly be competable with flagship headphones on a good desk-top setting. The DT880 from Beyerdynamic is dryer more analytical sounding though, with great detail and resolution, if that's what you are looking for, but not as musical as the HD600
@InnerFidelity
@InnerFidelity 11 жыл бұрын
I think the sound quality of the X1 is superior, but it's only for use at home or in the office really. If you're needing a good all around headphone that you can use portable, the M-100 is much better suited.

The X1 is good value for money. Min: Cable conducts mechanical noises like scraping because it has kevlar on the outside. Inside diameter of ear cups is about 6cm. Weight is not an issue. Ear pressure may oppose a problem with large-headed people.

Depends if you have amplification or intend to invest in any. If yes, I would recommend the following: AKG K701 Beyerdynamic DT 880 Sennheiser HD 650 All of these are less than 500$, but if you want something that can be driven easily even with a portable player, the Fidelio X1 will better suit your needs.

Listening to this review on my X1's, got them somewhat cheap (way cheaper than the HD650 though) and they're really really good. I agree with what Tyll said about it, but if you're paying full price and you have a good amp, i must say there are better alternatives. But if you don't have an amp these are also amazing since they are very easily drivin and it just gets better when you amp them.

Thanks for this review. I own these and had high hopes for them. Beautifully made and at the price can hold its head up against almost any other. From a purely personal point of view I find them too bassy. I like an open, neutral 'airy' kind of sound and over time that is the only way headphones don't become fatiguing for me. I also have BeyerDynamic DT 880 (closed back - and too bassy also). My faves are my AGK 701s. They are still my go to headphones for hi-fi listening with a headphone amp (Musical Fidelity X-Cans). I now use the Philips Fidelio X1s on my Yamaha digital piano where their sonic weightiness works quite well and their low impedance makes them an easy drive for the onboard headphone stage in the piano. Off topic I know but one headphone that has (pleasantly) surprised me is the Bang & Olufsen H2 - just a tad bass heavy for my taste but so nearly perfect for the price - ideal for iPad/iPod use. Thanks again for your thorough review! Cheers, Steve

Relatively, they are a little expensive, but no more so than most high end headphones. A good headphone usually costs more than 200 dollars, but the price can extend to $1500, and even higher if price is no object.

Great review as always. The fact that the earpads are not changeable is an absolute KO criterion in my opinion (especially in countries with warmer temperatures where tendency of transpiration is more relevant, like here in Brazil). I think that Philips are on a good way with regard to their headphones line of products, but this is absolutely stupid, can't find a diferent expression.

You don't like the HD598? That's a bit of a surprise to me. I own both and in a direct comparison it has higher fidelity than the X1 for sure. The bass is not very impactfull and lack some controll. They sound is pretty transperant, clear and neutral though and not wolly. I also have the HD600 and these two headphones are sidegrades IMO. To me the HD598 is the best buy in it's price range for everyday use.

still vacillating on whether or not to send these back for a pair of nad visos or focal spirits. While these don't blow away sealed headphones out of the water with excellent soundstage/imaging like a pair of hd800s (as I was hoping they would) the bit of spaciousness that they do have adds a bit of magic to acoustic guitars. On the other hand the treble sounds a bit grainy ant fatiguing, and it's really hard to go back to rolled off bass after hearing a flat bottomless headphone like the denon d2000
@m.g.i2480
@m.g.i2480 10 жыл бұрын
Hm to me the X1 is a lot less grainy and fatiquing then the D2000 and D600, although the Denons do have a bit more bass, but are not nearly as natural and open as the X1s. I also feel like the X1s do reveal more details in the music. But you could watch the TheGamingAudiophile review too, because he has both the NAD HP50 and the X1s and he prefers the X1s by quite a margin, it just doesnt get much better then the X1s in my opinion :D D600 is sent back cause they really were far to unnatural and fatiquing and unbalanced ... The D2000 seems to be a bit more natural though, but not my much. The Sennheiser HD598 is also really great for the money, but they lack the bass and the treble extension that the X1 delivers. The Sony MA900 are a bit more relaxing then the X1s and sound even opener, but they tend to crackle at high volumes, so not great for movies and games, but definitely amazing for music at moderate to semi high volumes. X1 still my favorite, getting my 3rd pair now oO Dont know whats wrong with me xD

@InnerFidelity what would you recommend for a full sized, open headphone for home use that aims for neutrality, at around £300/$500? Tyll, is the bass response on these deep enough in practice to reproduce those sub-sonics in movies satisfyingly? I ask because I'm interested in this but the frequency response shows a strong bass roll-off. I enjoy my Momentum very, very much but I would like a more open sound and i like my LCD-2 but the bass really isn't powerful enough for them to replace my home theatre.
