You mentioned dropping the engine twice when referencing timing chain/balance shaft. There is no need to do that. I know because I just did a timing chain replacement on my 2012 Terrain. I did remove the engine mount from that side of the engine. The previous owner of my Terrain paid $1400 for a timing chain replacement just 10K miles before I bought it from him. The shop completely ripped him off. I'm not poor but I don't live in NY state where I can go see Eric O. at South Main Auto, so I decided to tackle this myself. It went pretty smooth but I did hit a snag on the tensioner. It was really stuck hard and I had to get an Astro Pneumatic Nano impact to break it. Once that was done it was smooth sailing and my ECU cleared the timing fault code after the third engine crank.
@PhillipBailey4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible to do the chain and tensioner in the vehicle but not very pleasant. I would definitely attempt it in the vehicle if I needed to do it but at the dealership they drop the engine/transmission out of the vehicle. With the lifting and holding fixtures the whole engine/transmission and sub frame come out pretty easy but usually the vehicle is not very old and things are not that rusted. Thanks for the comment.

I have a 2011 Equinox. I replaced the exhaust manifold because it was cracked and caused a code for catalyst efficiency below threshold. Luckily I noticed the crack before I replaced the cats. That eliminated the problem and the code. A real pain in the ass to change that manifold, since you can't see any of the bolts. Hard to install. I hope I don't ever have to replace the water pump or the timing chains, but it probably will happen some day. Before winter, I have to remove the intake manifold and clear out the PCV passage because those will clog up and blow out the rear seal, then oil gushes out like a geyser. Had that happen once already and it cost like $1200 to get that fixed. Lucky it didn't destroy the engine. Hope to avoid that again. This 2.4L in this car also has an excessive oil burning problem that never ends due to the bad piston ring design. Of course, the dealership said that the consumption wasn't bad enough to warrant replacing the engine. I truly curse the day that I decided to buy this piece of junk. Never again GM, you only get to screw me over once.
@PhillipBailey3 жыл бұрын
I hear you. Problem is what to buy now? The other manufacturers are not much better. Too much technology in these engines makes them difficult to repair and complicated.
@fastbusiness3 жыл бұрын
@@PhillipBailey I honestly don't know. I have been leaning toward Toyota or Honda but I have read that they have had their problems as well. It seems that most manufacturers have, for years now, made engines and transmissions so that it is all but impossible for the average owner to repair them.
