Hahnel pro Combi TF Remote Control Review

Phillip, I just wanted to say thank you very much for your video. I dug out my Hahnel Pro Combi TF after a couple of years with it being in a cupboard; to use it to fire a Canon 580 EX speedlite for a commercial job. It didn't and I struggled to work out why. The answer came about 3 minutes in to your video, when you discussed the transmission code pins. At first I thought there would be no point in checking to see if the pins were set differently, as I distinctly remembered the flash firing the last time I used it. But they were. On the transmitter all pins were set to "down" (in the "off" position)but the first pin was set to "on" in the receiver! A quick push on the first pin in the transmitter, with a pencil got it working perfectly again! Thank you (4 years later) for a really helpful video. This comment may also be useful to another viewer (below) who wants to know if the Combi TF still works after a few years. Mine is at least 5 years old and it's still going strong - so long as the pins aren't moved by poltergeist!

The camera works in every way , it's exacly the same as not using it, all it does is fire the shutter or the flash from a distance.

You can get any shutter speed without flash, but with flash you will be restricted due to the synchronization between camera and flash, it's nothing to do with the trigger.

The product seem so authentic as described. One question i had in my mind however is, can receiver and external flash be put together on the camera hot shoe so that we can trigger through the transmitter from distance? Can it fire the both??

I've just set mine up, and it works fine , make sure that the receiver ( the big one is set to II and the smaller on the transmitter in this case is set to landscape, with the flash on top of the big one when pressing the button on the small one it should work, if not it seems the hot shoe on the flash or the receiver has a problem. One other thing that happened to me was when changing batteries , I hit the code buttons by accident,that might be worth checking they are the same I'm sorry

I have the Nikon variant, only difference is that there are 3 connecting cables instead of 2. Works great. Just for information the receivers are sold as individual units as well (approx £30).

Very enjoyable, a certain camera shop beginning with J, gave me incorrect info about the Nikon Giga T saying it would be suitable to use with studio lighting, and it wasn't, so they can have it back. I would have liked to see the connections to your studio lights clearer (not the flashguns), to help me out, but still very interesting indeed.

Try with the rear curtain sync , it must be the delay of the radio signal.

amazing full review, but does it support high speed of camera flash? I don't think so, I think only TTl triggers do that.

Hi Philip, i'd like to ask a simple question : i have a hahnel combi tf for canon and i just want fire a flash (Metz metz 50 af-1) with it, it's well configured, trigger on the landscape mode and receiver on 1 or two, both goes green, but it doesn't work, no flash... please i need some help. :)

Can i ask another question, when you take a picture, at what % can you say thats as good as it gets with your picture. if i zoom into the picture at 50% i find thats really the best picture, but if i zoom into the picture at 100% its very soft and not sharp. Do you have a canon camera?

Thank you for providing this video. I want to use this system with my Pentax K-3 (yes it will work with this) but I just getting into flash photography and can't afford a proper TTL flash just yet. So, I want to link the the flash trigger to an old but reliable Vivitar 283 on manual. Do you think that arrangement would work?

Hi i have a hahnel remove trigger, my questions is can you get a high shutter speed, using this trigger, i have a 5d mark 2 with this trigger it dosnt seem to allow me to go any higher than 1/250 speed. if i use a shutter speed say 1/1000 of sec. the picture comes out black. Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

HI Phillip, great video.. I recently purchased the Hahnel Combi TF Remote Control & Flash Trigger Canon but was unsuccesful in getting the flash to work. The flash unit used was a Canon speedlite 430exii . with a Canon 5d mkii . The trigger and receiver both worked in sync as both led colours red/green worked when you pressed the transmit button. Yes i can get high shutter speeds with flash on the camera, using high sync mode on flash, but when i take the flash off the camera and set-up with remote trigger it wont allow me go any higher than 1/250.

@marilyn: this is not a High Sync Speed triggers, so.. it'll not sync at your 1/1000 or higher than 1/320s. try the new ones.. "tuff"

with my 580EXII sitting on the hot shoe of my 5D mk II, the 2nd curtain sync works fine. However, when I use the combi TF and the speedlight off-camera, it fails to recognise the 2nd curtain sync mode and goes off normally. I have not read anywhere that this is an issue, but wondered whether I just have faulty gear. Your video with the ballet dancer inspired me to try 2nd sync and its very frustrating I cant get it to work, Thanks.

How can you change the battery of the transmitter? The one which already has the battery in it before use.

I 'never had to change it but under one of the labels there a screw if I remember but as I said I use it a lot and never needed to change it.
