In 45 years I have found that giving guitars away is less painful than selling them every guitar that I’ve ever owned I felt I couldn’t part with but when I give them to someone who I know will play them I feel very good about my decision call me weird but that’s my experience

The one thing I've realized about buying guitars over the years is that the ones that vibe with you the most, regardless of the value, are the ones to keep. We shouldnt buy guitars for future buyers; Buy guitars for us. Musical instruments are personal objects that make us feel happy, no matter what the monetary value is and that feeling is very personal to you and not anyone else. Anyway I absolutely regret selling my baja telecaster :'(

I have modified and painted a few Squier basses that I much prefer over my older Fender p’s (73 and 75). I purchased the 75 p brand new so it has tons of mojo. I transformed the Squiers into what I really like, without the guilt of modifying a classic bass. The paint colors are totally custom colors so the basses are one of a kind. No regrets there. I do regret selling an old Univox fretless violin bass which was a Gibson knock off….

I 100% agree with this statement, I spent over two years trading up from a USA special strat I got at a pawn shop to a 1994 Paul reed smith custom 24. The guitar by far the most beautiful and best feeling I’ve ever used. But the sound is meh. And I kinda preferred the strat 😂

Good post, Phillip. Although I don't regret it, I had to sell my Peresson violin to provide care for my wife's final days of cancer. My history with that violin went back to the mid 70's. Having no children, that fiddle was my baby.

My biggest regret of gear I let go is an original ADA Viper 1X12 (75 watt) all tube combo amp. It sounded amazing!!! Killer over drive channel and built in noise gate. An absolute metal machine!! Can’t even find one to look at online these days.

I recently discovered the Explorer shape 2 years ago with an 80s Ibanez destoyer....honestly..the shape makes it easier to play than other traditional guitar shapes. Sitting or Standing its just so easy to do anything.

Great video! The gear i regret getting rid of are the Walrus Audio Slo(too lazy to turn the knobs and switches) and the Fender Engager Boost (didnt know what mid boost meant at that time). Will probably buy both of these next year.

I had an '82 Gibson Spirit that my mom bought for me when I graduated from Army basic training. She was a single mom and didn't make alot of money so I know how hard she had to work to get the money for it. Fast forward about 20 years I had a sewage backup into the finished basement of my house that cost me alot of money to get sorted out. I had to sell some gear to get some of the money and that Spirit was one of the things that had to go. I sold it to a store I have a good relationship with and they gave almost what it was worth. A few days later I figured out a way to get the work on the house done cheaper and called the store to buy the guitar back. They had already sold it. I haven't been able to find anything close as far as playability or mojo since. I sometimes don't even want to play anymore because when I do I reminisce about it and get disappointed with whatever guitar I'm playing.

I get what you mean about that 594, tried one on my local SamAsh, and loved it. Ended up getting a used one which looked awesome but didn’t feel the same at all. Ended up selling it, the SamAsh still has the other one there, which looks basically like a used guitar from the many times people have demoed it, but they won’t take one dollar off the price. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I once owned a Maton Phil Manning custom Stereo guitar, I bought it second-hand for a ridiculously low price, It sounded great and had the best neck that I can recall playing. A friend wanted it and offered me a straight swap deal on his Ibanez Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Copy. The Ibanez looked killer so I went for it. I still have nightmares regretting losing that Maton, it was special.

I finally found my first regret guitar. I had traded a Jackson Dominion Mark Morton series for a Schecter Apocalypse with a floyd. I really didnt want a floyd but I loved the finish. Shortly after our water heater took a dump and I had to sell it to Sam Ash. That guitar was a cold sweat at night afterwards till I finally ordered a replacement from AMS with a hardtail, its not the same but Columbus Sam Ash sold mine before I could buy it back. Its still listed under that store for curiosity sake on the finish. but thats the part that will bug me. the finish was just right. Not to green not to brown. But it is what it is. The new one is killer and I'm glad I have a hipshot coming from a hellraiser with a tonepro. And I have a set of the apocalypse p/u's on the way for my hellraiser to replace the EMG's but I'll always be watching my local market to see if the first one ever comes up for sale.

Great regrets video Phil, that's probably the wrong way to put it lol, we often say our hearts rule our heads, maybe sometimes we should go with it and stop over thinking the situation. Is that what we do with affordable guitars? we play it we love it but we convince ourselves it can't be that good because it didn't cost enough or it has the wrong name on the headstock? food for thought.

I may be crazy... But, I've considered selling my favorite guitar for some I don't have and it's middle price. Every time I pick it up I see I love it. It's a gretsch 5422. Nothing special but... I can't get rid of it. I sold everything I had to get on a sail boat for 3 years and I've missed some of it. Truth is. I still remember all of them. And that's what matters to me. No regrets, just fond memories. That's okay right. I think so.

Had the same experience with a Charvel So Cal in Rocket Red (Road Flare Red). After I sold it....and figured out it was a mistake....it took me over a year to find another one. Charvel discontinued that color and now they can't be found. I will definitely be keeping this one.

Phil, I really enjoy you channel. I purchased a Road Flare Red Charvel a couple years back, and it feels and plays fantastic, so much that I eventually purchased another 4 Charvel pre-owned So-Cal's (2-MIM, 1-MIJ, 1-US). Out of the 5 Charvel's my 2 favorites are the Red San Dimas(MIM) and the Black So-Cal(MIJ).

I have a Mockingbird that I got while flying all over the USA working back in 2005. I have wanted one since the 80's and never could afford one. Naturally you play them when you visit music stores and keep the dream alive. I was in Texas and needed strings for my Washburn RR 11v I drug all over the country with me to play. I checked out the top of the line ones and one of the store monkeys talked me into checking out an NJ classic they just got in. The first chord I fretted told me it was going home with me. Not one of the MANY MANY Mockingbirds I played felt like this one did. So I made arrangements to have it inter store shipped back where I am from and picked it up the next time I got home. Two weeks ago I gave it some much needed love and set the neck up closer to what I like, redressed the frets and for giggles added an FRX that I originally got to put on my entry into the Great Guitar Build Off that didn't quite work out. Still working out those kinks but after the work on the neck it is back to being my best feeling and playing guitar to date. So I know what you mean when you regret sending something that felt great over another more aesthetically valued piece of gear.

I had a Daphne blue American standard strat with a solid rosewood neck. Like the one in the background. I installed an ivory nut, it was killer. Sold it on reverb. Regretted it the instant it old.

Tagimas are great made in Brazil with local wood guitars! They are more accessible to BR musicians than any NA brand

Having just sold my 2 year old white Jem 7v this resonates. One of the last ones made in Japan. It’s sitting in a box waiting for UPS to pick it up and I’m wondering how much I’ll miss it in a few months! Totally not my style in looks or with the locking trem…but I do recognise it’s a great guitar.

Exactly! Sometimes finding the right PRS is the one you need to buy. I actually am not crazy about custom 24s....but I CAN NOT do without my particular Custom 24...and no custom 24 i play sounds, resonates or feels like it. I've had several other CU24s...but sold them all. When you shop for guitars in person...no matter what price point...try everything...even something you may not really be looking for...because if you find that guitar that gives you that "magic" that's the one.

At the time, I was off work due to a medical issue and needed the money. It was my favorite guitar...but family came first. I have 2 biggest gear regrets: Number 1, I removed the 2 single coil pickups from my 1995 Fender Foto Flame MIJ Super Strat so it would be a single humbucker, because my favorite guitarist played single humbucker guitars, and I gave the pickups away. The single coils actually sounded amazing in that guitar, and I feel that guitar has lost some of it's original mojo because of that, so I wish I never did it. Number 2, I bought a really beat up Peavey Classic 50 for around $200, it sounded amazing, but ended up selling it because it was a clean amp, and I wanted an amp with distortion. I didn't think about having multiple amps at the time. That was a really killer amp.

I sold my first Gibson guitar the SGJ 120th anniversary. For an inexpensive Gibson it was so comfortable to play and sounded great. Oh well.

There are a couple. One being a Marshall MG50DFX. I know it's solid state and not expensive, but I loved it. Second was an Epiphone Les Paul custom in Alpine white. I didn't like the weight, so got rid of it. I wish I still had it though. I also sold my Adrian Smith Jackson. After my dad died 9 years back, in a moment of madness I bought one on a credit card. My wife when she found out went mental, and I always felt guilty after that. I wasn't thinking straight, and had nowhere to turn. Maybe if she hadn't been such a cow, I'd still have it. A pedal one was an Ernie Ball Crybaby Jimi Hendrix model, that sounded amazing, and looked cool as hell. I traded it along with some other stuff, and almost instantly regretted it. I contacted the guy, but he had fallen in love with it immediately, so I had no chance. Weird thing was, I tried another one around a year later, but it just didn't sound the same. I know that sounds crazy. Lastly turned out OK. In 2010 I was made redundant, so I sold my beloved 1999 USA Series Stratocaster. Luckily I sold it to my brother in law. A coupe of months back, I was up at my sisters looking at doing some work for them as I'm a Carpenter. We were chatting and I told him, I was considering buying another electric guitar. I have basses and acoustics, but I didn't have a 6 string electric. He replied to say, what about you're old Strat. I nearly passed out as I didn't think he would ever let it go. So a week later we did the deal and she came home. I had to give her a major clean up, fret dress etc... I also changed the scratchplate to a tortoiseshell one. She's never leaving again. It's hands down the best, playing, looking and feeling guitar I've ever owned. So a happy one to end on.

In the shot where you're cheering with your AZ at 5:50, the guy with the green guitar is Mika Tyyskä, aka. Mr. Fastfinger, holding his green Ruokangas guitar - if you can get your hands on one, try it out. Perfection (and this is reflected in the price :D). My biggest regret is giving in to the GAS about a year ago. I should've kept playing my old cheap guitar and ordered a Ruokangas. Ultimately cheaper and would've ended up with a better guitar.

I borrowed an early Vigier Marilyn for a review once...it had sat around the shop for a while and I had a chance of getting in to reviewing for magazines...so I took it away...and I loved it...and I did not want to give it back....and after a year, the shop had not asked for it back and I was split between thinking I would get away with just keeping it and feeling guilty for thinking I could get away with it......six months later I lost to my moral streak and took it back....I left it another few weeks and revisited the shop to see if I could maybe cut a deal...only to discover that on the day I took it back, it went on a stand in the amp room where an altercation with an actual guitar thief resulted in a Marshal full stack with head being pulled over on top of it....destroying it utterly.....I should have just kept it....fate is a fickle mistress.....

I was buying alot of guitars from pawnshops and budget guitars online to improve my luthier skills. Some I gave to kids that wanted to play but couldn't afford a decent guitar, I regret none of those. There was a '95 squier, tobacco with all black hardware that I picked up for $80 that was a fantastic guitar. I traded it for a Sterling ax20 because I have American and mim strats plus four other squiers. I miss that squier.... it was a really great guitar ! 🎸🤟🍻

Ugh I feel this pain. Back in the day,about 10-12 yrs ago I had a Marshall JMP 1 pre anp. Jeez that thing was sweet. Totally satisfied my "need" for that Steph Carpenter tone. And more. Dang also I remember only paying like $450 ish for it on ebay. Now I see ppl asking $1000 wow. Also at that same time period I had a Candy apple red Jackson DK something with the maple board and black sharkfin inlays and Duncans. Miss that too. Most recently tho a Diezel VH4 2 pedal. But that's not toooo costly to get again. And hey, I thought Sid Vicious said 'regrets i had a few' ... Oh well 😂

I recently traded a lefty Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar as part payment for an lefty Fender American Pro II Telecaster. Love the Tele, but after a few days I realised I really missed the Jaguar. Luckily the shop (Andertons in the UK) took pity and let me buy back the Jaguar for the amount they paid me for the part-ex. So I have my guitar back and haven’t lost out financially. I have also kept the Tele.

regret selling my 70's Kustom tuck and roll 100W amp and 2-10 inch jensen spkrs. ..... it was a sceamer. I bought a new 90's reissue of the same but with 15 inch Celestions. Its nice....just not the same bite.

I am SO glad I still have (nearly) all the guitars I have bought in the 10ish years I have been playing. Only ones I sold are a BC Rich that I got for Christmas during high school, my first "real" guitar, and the First Act that I got just to see if I enjoyed the instrument. Sold the BC Rich to a good friend, so I could buy it back one day if I wanted it. The first nice guitar I bought myself with my part-time job money from high school was a used Ibanez Iceman IC400 with the hardshell case for around 230 bucks; seeing the price of these things going for easily double or triple that price these days is insane! Will never sell it.

I too , don’t really like any other style of guitars other than strat and Les Paul body style, but I do have a 2000 Jackson Kelly stars that for the life of me I cannot put it down , happy Pickens

Been playing close to 40 years now and when I think back there’s so much I wish I still had today….. Biggest regret is letting my 1990 PRS go 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

The only guitar I really, truly regret getting rid of is a Gibson SG Jr. I bought on closeout from Musician's Friend for $399 back around 2003/2004 or so. It may have been an MF/GC special run. DAMN it was a great guitar. Great, rock-solid chunky neck (it may have been the guitar that endeared chunky necks to me), "lightning bolt" wrap-around bridge that intonated perfectly, slick playability, killer P-90 that could seemingly do anything, all right out of the box. I never had to touch a thing in term of set-up. To this day I can't remember what motivated me to sell it (probably some other piece of gear that caught my eye), but every once in a while I look around on Reverb to see if I can find one from that same time period.

I can't remember how many subs you were at in 2016, but that's when I first subscribed. I know it was WAY under 100k, possibly around 35k, but you were still doing retail at your store. Every once in awhile, you talked a little about some of the issues you encountered as a smaller dealer, and after you got past a certain monetization threshold, you phased out the retail portion of your business, and concentrated on lessons, and other aspects of the business. I personally think that whatever trades you made that resulted in you being able to keep growing, scale your business, and stay true to what you've been doing all these years, they were wise trades.

I know what you mean the PRS 594 being the right one ☝️ This shows that all guitars that should be more or less the same as they are the exact same model can be so different. I wanted a Casino for years but couldn’t really afford or justify paying for one ( as I had enough guitars). I made my mind up to get one and tried loads of new ones, I was just so disappointed they were terrible. One day I walked into my local Guitar shop in Ringwood ( England) on the back wall there was a second had cherry red Epi Casino for as much as a new one, I said to the guy in the shop “I could buy a new one for that price” he replied “okay do it but it won’t be the same as that one, try it” I picked it up and played it OMG it was a guitar made in heaven (well actually in the Samick factory Korea) no hesitation I bought it and that was 5 or 6 years ago this guitar is stuck with me for life. What a guitar! Well worth the money every penny.

Two regrets I had a "92" Les Paul Classic 60 gold top and a early 70's Martin 00018 I sold them both for various reasons At the time it seemed to be the right thing to I miss them both.

I've always been the guy with the quirky stuff. Not the norm. Anyway I got a Steinberger GM4T for $550 at Dan's (this was 1998 or so and I collect Steinys) I ran into some money trouble and pawn it for $150. Well I lost it and to replace my white GM4T (thanks Vito) it's around $2500 to $3000. Transtrem is amazing if you learn to dial it in right! THANKS PHILLIP FOR ALL THE GREATNESS

I have several gear regrets as well... but the greatest loss was my first guitar and amp that were both stolen at different times... my first electric guitar, the Charvel designed Super Strat the Gibson WRC SR-71 in white with black parts (it's Authentic right?) ... and an early 70s Fender Silverface Twin Reverb I found in my grandparents garage (they have been holding it for a musician who moved back to the home country... it had been sitting there for decades. I was 17 and asked them can I have this? They contacted the guy and he said I could use it as well as the guitar that's there, an early 70s natural ash Strat.. it weighed a lot so I didn't play it much compared to my Super Strat Gibson which also had a really good Kahler floating bridge (The Spyder). Of course the Strat through the Twin did not sound like heavy metal and I didn't know much about how to make it sound better with pedals since I was more into the keyboards and synths then anyway... boy do I wish I had them now! The guy visited one year and took back for the guitar but let me Jane the amp (to heavy to ship home to Hungary at that time). Unfortunately, a few years later my brother Andrew was borrowing the amp and it was stolen a few days after they had a party. I also once sold a '96 spec built USA Strat Plus Deluxe in vintage white, vintage colored maple neck, 3 Gold Lace Sensors, 2 point trem, roller ball nut with the Schallers... and actually bought it back, then sold it again! Crazy...I know... and I miss that guitar....A LOT!! There are also many Keyboards I regret selling... but this comment is already too long as it is! 😎🎸🤘🎹

“I regret getting rid of …..” The anthem of all guitarists. This video hits home. I’ve been playing, selling & trading guitars for 40 years. Here’s a partial list of my regrets: ‘72 Les Paul Custom ‘62 Strat 1st year Squire Strat ‘’71 Princeton ‘77 Twin (bought new) ‘78 Marshall 4140 (bought new) ‘65 Gretsch Tennessean Mutrin Biphase Memory Man (orig 70’s) Dan Armstrong Lucite guitar & Bass Martin D28 & 18 Despite my regrets, I’m thankful for the priceless conversations and friendships guitars have given me. Learning how to play a guitar is one of the best things I’ve ever done. Those “regrets” aren’t so bad so bad after all. But dang! I wish……. !

So true on the MIM Strats. They now cost a lot more used and usually( for the money) on par with the MIA . That’s the old standards. I no longer am interested in Fender with all the changes. Too confusing. Love Squiers more!!!

Lol one of my regrets is when I sold my pink Charvel SoCal. I remember watching your video for the red San Dimas as I was waiting for it to arrive (also was my first purchase from Sweetwater). I sold it after a few months thinking I could buy another one whenever I wanted but they were gone from everywhere... Been waiting for another one to pop up but the few that have more thjan I would want to pay. I'm not sure what is the deal with those first run of 5 pack of colors but they were better guitars than some of the other SoCals I've picked up since.

I was obsessed with the Music Man Saber Bass for many years & finally scored 1 of the reissues for a reasonable price. Here’s the problem: the thing is the most beautiful boat anchor I’ve ever seen & because of its value I would never want it to leave the house & because of its weight I can’t really comfortably play it for more than about a 1/2 hour. I feel like I should sell it as it’s certainly not something I need but I am very concerned about the potential regret factor.
