About what to charge for your time there is a great analogy in car mechanics, the story says that some guy broke down his car and when the mechanic comes, takes a look at the car, takes a screwdriver, tightens a bolt and say to the driver to start it up, the car starts perfectly, the driver says how much do I owed you to the mechanic and he says 200 dollars, the driver can not believe it and says “ 200 dollars for 1 minute of work? “ and the mechanic reply: 1 dollar to tighten the screw, 199 for knowing what screw to tight!

Hey Phil. Thanks for your service. I'm also a veteran. Didn't know about Guitars for Vets. Every month, each person in our house including the kids takes a turn choosing a charity to donate to. I told the family about Guitars for Vets based on you talking about it here, and our oldest son decided to use his "turn" for this charity. I'll be doing the same when my month comes up. Cheers. That neck notion is sooo on point. There is no reason you’ll play a guitar if it looks good and the neck doesn’t suit you. Doesn’t matter the price. Guitar is a very tactile instrument.

I have Gibson and Epiphones and I agree with the playability points you make. One you didn’t mention is the neck finish, Epiphone has a poly finish while the Gibson uses lacquer. I find the Stock Epi neck sticky and I solve that with a light polishing with brass wool. The new Epiphone guitars are great and when properly set up and the defects corrected can play every bit as well as it’s parents equivalent.

As a guy who buys and sells a few guitars each year, I don't look for artist guitars unless there is something that appeals to me either in looks or function. If it is something I have never had in my hands before, I can't know how it feels until I get one usually buying it. My wife said that is such a waste, but I replied how much do you spend on fishing each year with your Dad and brothers. They are all catch and release for the most part. So my guitars are catch and release as well I play it a while and take pictures of me having landed it but in the end, I then release it, back into the wild for somebody else to land the big one.

Josh himself admits that he learned a lot by working with Boss and a lot of Josh's innovations came from that collaboration. With the MXR + Analogman collaboration, you should see it as Mike Pierra and Jeorge Tripps collaborating, two of the most legendary pedal builders out there, and you're getting that collaboration and legacy at a reasonable price. Similar to when Paul Cochrane and MXR collaborated for the MXR Timmy. I have a Timmy V3 and I have also played both previous versions of the Timmy and the MXR version. The MXR version deserves it's spot and does the Paul Cochrane version justice.

I'm one of those people who had a Les Paul and sold it, and I don't want another one. In this case it was a mid-70's Deluxe. So I guess I'm a rarity. But on the other hand I'm a PRS fan, and I own a couple of McCartys. So maybe those count? And I would be open to a Heritage, or a very old (Think 1950s) LP with P-90s if I could afford it.

I live in an older house. I think dirty power effects the Tonemaster quite a bit. I have a tonemaster Twin as well and I got the same white noise and slight radio signals before I changed the outlets in my house. Also use a surge protector. I don’t get any unwanted noise anymore. Hope that helps.
@markmcdonald5711
@markmcdonald5711 10 ай бұрын
A lot of older houses have the outlets changed out to 3 prong outlets but when you test the outlets they read open ground and when you check the wiring you find out the house has the older 2 conductor wiring with no grounded conductor. Surge supressors don't work properly without the ground conductor and the open ground will add hum and noise to your guitar amp, EMF and RFI. The grounded conductor makes a big difference.

"You don't choose the strings, the guitar does." Very true for me. I bought a SG standard in 2018, and it was sold to me from Gibson with 9's on it. That's the gauge I'd always played previously, and the 2018 SGs have very thin fast necks. Even with an expert setup, the neck was far too unstable to keep 9s in tune. I put 10s on and now it stays in tune (as good as anything will) and plays and feels really nice. It's the only guitar I have with 10s yet, but now that I'm used to them, I could see putting them on others.

Hi Phil. At 42:24, Duesenberg does this on the Starplayer Special. I have one. Regarding to the butique pedals on mass market it seems that we do not see elephant in the room. Last year chineese producers began to make exact clones of rare and expensive pedals. And this is not that crappy $20 copies they have even few years ago but exact point to point versions for the reasonable money. It's not a big deal to assemble and solder dosen electronic components. Actually it's a XX-th century technologies. Plus these "magic diods" of course :) I'm not talking about the ethics but only about the market reactions by the way. Hope this makes sence.

Phil you're 100% right on the gear head assessment. I have a friend who's a recording artist and he plays guitar on a weekly basis but he doesn't pay attention to gear at all. He has a digital solution he uses for everything. If he were to buy a new pedal he's the kind of guy who's going to walk into a store and see what they have on display and buy whatever they have there. For those of us in the YT bubble there's a tendency to think this pedal or that one is the BEST and the other options you have well you must not be a serious guitar player. There's tons of players out there that pick a pedal based on price and "yeah it sounds good to me". I think the MXR pedal is going to be a huge seller for them. Most people are gonna walk into a store, and maybe they've heard some good things about that duke king pedal thing, so that's the one they go with cuz analogman who?

I have 3 warmoth basses and aside from the fact that they tend to be heavy (they either have steel as the standard reinforcment or carbon fiber rods as the upgraded reinforcment) the necks are straight and the fretwork is very good. Yes a luthier can polish the frets further and round the ends nicely but they are very playable out of the box.

Because of the inherent minimum bed radius of a string, when the break angle of the string exposed between the bridge and the "stop" of that string the bridge causes that minimum to be neared. That increases tension in that portion of the sting to increase with the decreasing radius of the bend over the bridge. Therefore minimizing the difference in height between the bridge and the stop tailpiece relieves tension. This differential must be adjusted according to playing force imparted to minimize negative effects of introduction of force to produce string vibration.

As for Analogman - I don't think they need more recognition if they can't deliver You a product in two years , because they have so long list of orders... But they may have a profit from Mxr sale . If it is too close to Prince Of Tone then it may harm the sale of POT , as it is already produced in Asia and is more expensive. They may though not want to produce POT anymore in future, and that may be the reason for Mxr partnership... Look what happened to Timmy after releasing Mxr Timmy . It is now harder to get the real deal .

So Phil, just figured I would throw this out there to you. The Floyd Rose Blocks. If you would like another opinion I would volunteer. So I have been a subscriber since 2017, also remember the know your beers and gear back in 2020 my idea. So I am a loyal fan. I definitely try to not do you wrong. Why would I volunteer? I have been playing Floyds since the 80's. It is my bridge, it is what I play and what I love. I also do my own setups so changing a block for me is no biggy. I am an active musician and play live. I have roughly 35 guitars with 80% that are not floyds. the 20% include Ibanez, cause they have the various edge trems, or hard tail. You also may remember a couple weeks ago I super chatted New Guitar day Les Paul Access with a Floyd. I have a PRS 10 top with a floyd. I have a Suhr Custom Modern with a floyd. I have USA Kramer with Floyd, I have ESP with Floyd and Schechter with floyd. Floyd is what I do. Which is why I was so excited about this announcement. I feel really odd like I am applying for a job with my floyd rose knowledge. Now I am no youtuber, so yes you would be taking a chance. However, I too have been super curious for years on all the different blocks. Years, long years. I would be more than willing to try and swap several blocks in several guitars and record samples, uploaded to soundcloud or what ever. I am fully set up for sound recording. Then if you would like to chat about it over zoom when done you can record it, edit it. what ever. I want no reimbursement, I want to know. It always seemed gimmicky. Anyway, I know you have worked on floyd for decades, I played on floyd for decades. You have my contact info. I have bought from you on reverb, bought blackstock pickups, Oh and I have a KYG hat rare. If you think about it and interested lets chat. If not well i certain look forward to the video

I can attest to the harder playing guitars versus softer, and as Philip suggested it is usually the nut they are cut deep and you just have to wear that thing in a little bit man for the strings to loosen up or switch to lighter strings.. usually you don’t only feel the difference in tension but your fingers will also tell you because it will hurt more from playing the harder guitar😆

A lot of wealthy touring people are buying up Dumble amps & ripping out the original EV 12L speakers, & replacing them with Celestion G12100K speakers, so guess what? It's not a Dumble amp anymore. Soldano used different cold clipping resistors & a different bright cap than Marshall. It's not rocket surgery. PRS jumped two Marshall channels together. Again, not rocket surgery. Alex Dumble would do the McIntosh thing by individually pre-checking every component part before using it. Not rocket surgery either, but that is a part of rocket surgery. Parts drift with age and McIntosh had clinics where they would restore your McIntosh amp back to factory specs for free-ish. You had to travel to get to that Mc Intosh clinic and schlep all of your Mc Intosh equipment along for the ride.

The guitar that eludes me is an ESP LTD viper 1000 deluxe with Olympic white, gold hardware, and SD pickups. I am ether a day late and a dollar short or the condition is not what I want or it is not Olympic white. There is one on reverb allegedly owned by a famous guitarist but I am not paying 15 hundred bucks just because somebody famous played it.

My first business, I tried to to everything "right". It was a disaster. I should have grown into "right". I didn't even know what "right" was, and the only way I could have found out was to operate for a while. But I'm in NJ so the regularity environment is a mess. Also I was exempt from sales tax. You got to be 'right' when it comes to sales tax.

I have variable coil split on my HSS strat. I wanted cool split and master tone so it worked in keeping the original look. The variable split with a regular pot isn’t as much fun as I imagined - maybe other have played around with other pots or other components to make it more compelling

Variable coil split can be done easily, but the transition positions aren't very useful or satisfying. The nice thing about the Peavey style coil split is that it's integrated into a normal tone potentiometer, no additional switch or special pot needed. That said, the reason it's never been all that popular is that most players don't understand what it does, and the transitional positions just aren't very useful or dramatic.

Well, about how many guitars, I have two humbucker guitars (one Warrior with floyd rose and one SG with fixed bridge), a single coil tele and a P90 LP Junior, plus an acoustic. That looks for me like a good and sufficient solution. But I think a high quality HSS with split coil should be enaugh.

Robben Ford is known to use vintage Celestion G12-65's in his cabinets and that's definitely a major part of his tone, Just wondering if the Celestion Heritage G-12-65's are the real deal or different. ???

We have an amazing Luthier's Tool maker here in the UK it's not that softly spoken geezer with the Tat's covering his canister, he's very expensive. I buy my Tools from Chris Alsop Guitar bits. He can be Googled. His Tools are just as good as Crimson's but not as pricey.

The area of most often perceived string tension is in the upper half of the neck in the fretting hand and near the bridge in the picking hand. Lesser sensations are perceived within the lower pitches on the neck and string flow over frets can influence this perception by adding friction resistance to the actual sting tension.

In the case of MXR / AnalogMan, it's even a better thing than Boss / JHS because of the huge waiting list 4 years) to get a King of Tone. So AnalogMan was not able to deliver more of them anyway.

Ease of playing can reduce tactile feedback during playing to the extent of impeding enjoyment. No two players are exactly alike. One must know both self and instrument.

The internet thing: They sell more internet bandwidth then they actually have, but only a certain percentage of people actually notice that the internet is slower then it should be. They have a priority list, and when you call, you get put at the top of the list. Slowly throughout the year you work your way down the list until you hit the point where they start throttling your internet again. Call back, get put back at the top of the list, rinse and repeat.

If you want to wait for a hand built King of Tone like i did for 2 years then you can, If a mass manufactured product that works the same for less money works for you then there is no problem. Some people would still pay for the original or to get one wired with the custom options like fully split in and out or a hotter chipset or power in and out or custom case colors. Anyway MXR only makes the Prince of Tone, (half a KOT) not the King of Tone which is the bigger seller and is much more customizable.
