One of the things you have just reminded me of Phil, is how genuine you are when you do reviews. There is no fake, car salesman attitude, just straight up honesty. I wish more people did their reviews like this. Nothing too elaborate, just one musician telling another guitarist what-is-what. Awesome video as always. Cheers

All you need for a top of the line sounding electric guitar is new (or relatively new) strings, a good tight neck to body connection (screws a la Fender or otherwise), a solid, strong wood (the species of wood is irrelevant), and a good pickup. The rest is just window dressing. So to me, it's no surprise that the guitar sounds good!

I went ahead and bought one out of curiosity, arrived today. Honestly, I've played worse or at least comparable guitars at 3x the price. It ain't perfect but it won't cost me more than about $75 or so to get it in good shape (less if I did any of that stuff myself) and it plays and sounds pretty good. I'd gig with it but also wouldn't be afraid to travel with it.

So, after seeing this video I bought one and have been playing it for three days now. My impressions: 1. the action arrived super high and will need a setup--100% expected. 2. This is the heaviest guitar I've ever owned or even tried out. It is significantly heavier than my Les Paul. It honestly feels like it is made from a wet 2x6 at Home Depot. The pickups, hardware and electronics are all as good as you can buy at any price. I'd say these tuners are easily 2x as nice as Grovers. This is an axe for a working, traveling musician. It is built like a tank to last and stay in tune. Compared to an Affinity Tele, the pickups are far more clean with no mud. I'd put the pickups at the level of an American Tele or better--depends on your taste. This is likely the best $200 ($240 with shipping) you can spend on a guitar right now, and I will happily collect their other models. I think they could add to their margins by using lighter wood and no one would complain--seriously it is ridiculously heavy. If I could shave 3/8" off the thickness I certainly would.

Check out the video by Zach Broyles on YT comparing a SL59 vs a Gibson Les Paul, Jr. The Slick owns it tonewise, imo. The Gibson sounds tighter and "cleaner", but I love the nasty, dirty swagger of the Slick by far. Slick guitars just ooze attitude. They can still do "pretty" when backed off volume wise. But they excel at cranked, mean, sweaty, sexy R&R and Blues. They also feel super responsive to subtleties of picking, fingering, bending, pinched harmonics etc...

Replacing body is a good option if it is just too heavy for you. I just think there is something to the weight and the super light finish on them. Even my wife remarked when I was playing it while not plugged in that "this guitar is very resonant".

I like the angled headstock. I don't always like them, and they don't usually work on Fender-style guitars, but it's a good fit here both visually and functionally. No string trees, and no expensive staggered tuners.

Yes, I agree 1000% I have an SL-50 as well, and its an amazing guitar, at any price. The tune o matic overwrap bridge, and back route is incredibly unique, and works extremely well on a Tele. Its also wired with good cloth pushback wire, a great pot and switch. The black headstock doesnt quite match, and the "new" neck , but so what, its an amazing guitar. It is a bit heavy , but thats because its swamp ash, not regular ash. It is well balanced however, and I like the weight. As far as fret sprout, mine was perfect as well. I would say considering the attention to detail put in Slick guitars overall, its not likely an exception. Mine is a rosewood fretboard that is extremely well made, and the fretboard is polished (no finish, just polished wood), and plays amazing. Any guitar that sits in a box on a shelf may have to have the strings and frets wiped down. Not a big deal.

I have the ubiquitous Epiphone Les Paul Junior. Single cutaway - single humbucking pickup. Their bottom line starter guitar. $125. Stock lightning bolt bridge is fine. Replaced the pickup with a Duncan '59 ($75) and a installed a set of GFS sealed generic tuners ($25). Nice cherry poly finish (none of that satin relic nonsense). Total investment $225 and it's one of the best sounding and best playing guitars that I own or have ever owned, for that matter. Just a real joy to play. We live in the age of great quality inexpensive guitars... and music that no longer has guitar solos.

I bought two of these GFS Slick guitars: the SL52 for me (Les Paul shape, two humbuckers) and an SL 59 for my wife (two cutaways, P90 pickup.) They are fantastic guitars. Sort of like a "working man's guitar" or something- - devoid of "flashy" elements. Just rock solid components, like the solid brass bridge, swamp ash body, and killer "aged" humbucking pickups. In fact, I like those Slick Humbucker pickups so much, when I bought a 2014 Les Paul Studio, I yanked out the stock pickups and wiring (which used a circuit board- - UGH!) and put in Slick Humbuckers, and Old School wiring and potentiometers... all of which I got from guitarfetish. The "relic" aspect of the finish turns out to convey a huge advantage: because the guitar looks a little beat up already, you won't baby it! You can just play the hell out if it without worrying about scuffing it up or whatever. You can just leave it lying around the living room, to pick up and play whenever inspiration strikes, rather than putting it away in its case (where it's a hassle to get at when that inspiration shows up.) Great guitars!

I took a chance on a SL51 Tele. Cost me $250 shipped. Spent another $80 on a pro set up inc a neck shim. IMO opinion you'd be hard pressed to find better for the money, and new - not at all. Prior to this I was a bit of a snob, buying only 'the real things'. I have a $5k Gibson custom shop 59 VOS that I'm too scared to gig with and don't play that often. I happily throw the Slick around, play it loads and absolutely love it. My only mod was to cover the tacky headstock logo with a strip of black electrical tape. Invisible from afar. I get a lot of positive comments about it; looks and feels like a guitar that costs WAY more than it does.

My first few guitars were from GFS. I honestly have not found a P90 pickup with the same bite and depth as their Dream 90 pickups. The first one I got from them was a flawless "clearance" Thinline P90 T-style unit (XV-600 I believe was the model number) for about $109 bucks at the time. It was in clearance because they were getting rid of the model, not because it was a B-Stock. I use it to this day even though I have Gibson P90s and Yamaha's now.

I've had a Slick SL57 strat for a few years now and LOVE it. I've had 3 Squier strats (Affinity and Standards) and the Slick is a better guitar IMO. It is distressed on the paint and hardware which looks really cool, but even better, it plays great with a comfortable neck, flatter radius and great pickups for all the "quack" you'd ever want. Downside, the ash body is pretty heavy and the upper frets could use some light filing which I'm working on today as a matter of fact. I'd love to try the Tele....thanks for the video Phillip!!!

I don't understand why the Quick Plug system hasn't caught on like wildfire- it's literally an extension of Leo Fender design IMHO- makes it a 100% complete easily swappable component guitar= if they were to use MFD pickups with the adjustable pole pieces they would kick everyone's ass right now in that market.

It is 100% real deal graphite nut when i buy generic ones they cost me 1$ for the amount of 10, Bone cost me free hey i make them alone ☺..Graphite nut is great especially for tremolo guitars and people who like to bend strings. For example i have 1st class nitro painted 2 p alder body for 50$ rutted ! 1st class one peace Canadian hard maple neck with nitro again for 50 $ ☺ - so what you think how much GFS pay and they order large amounts? We live in time of CNC and there is no need for guitars to be so expensive as they are, then people wonder ''how PRS, Suhr, Friedman etc are millioners'' of course they will be super rich when they sell CNC mass produced guitars so expensive + they brainwash musicians with ''you have to pay 2-3000$ for pro guitar''. In late 80's hand made guitar (no cnc) with 1st class wood was like 500-700$ so how then 30 years after with CNC can cost 3000$?!? 500$ in today's money is a bit over 1000$ and to underline it was hand made it takes far more time ..CRAZY ☺

I will second that. I purchased an Oscar Schmidt oe20 with purple sunburst finish about a year ago and was absolutely shocked at the level of quality this 200$ guitar offered. The thing sustains for days, plays and sounds better than guitars I paid 10 times that price. And it looks awesome too. My only previous experience with Oscar Schmidt was an acoustic guitar I bought new in the 90s that was mediocre at best. Cheap guitars have really come along way. Its a shame that when I was coming up, guitars in this price range were all particle board garbage that weren't worthy of being smashed

Well, either they have gotten their act together recently, or it's just hit or miss. You fared better than I did. I was intrigued by the look and price of the guitars especially though black ash body Telecaster, which is what I bought. The finish on the body was awesome. It felt comfortable like your favorite pair of worn-out jeans. Unfortunately, that was offset by all the other problems my guitar had. The cavity for the bridge pickup was routed off center enough that you could see it peeking out from under the bridge plate, which was off center enough so that I could see by looking at the strings in relation to the fingerboard from quite a distance. Screw holes for the neck were crooked and so was the neck plate, which is how I noticed. I might be willing to try again, that is if I can ever catch the black ash Stratocaster when it's in stock.

There may be a problem changing the strings with a lowered bridge as the access holes go below the body on the bridge. My guitar's frets had no spout also. The toggle switch has a low quality plastic internal shaft, brass tip is all show. Full sized volume pot came lose within the first hour, removed control cavity cover to hold pot when tightening the volume pot. The Volume knob's core is plastic it's not solid brass. So if your going to do serious gigging with this guitar I'd replace that toggle switch before it fails at a live performance on you. The full sized pot has no brand naming that I can see. The pot feels OK for now but I don't think it's up to snuff for long term serious use; replace it if you have the now how with a HQ known brand and a solid metal knob. Chinese made guitars always seem to have lose pots, They seem to be always be finger tightened and the controls are always low grade. Only a few bucks more to use the good stuff in the first place. Yes brand name guitar company's don't want them as good as there top dollar models, that's obvious why they do it. So why are brands like Slick, Monoprice and others allowing the Chinese Manufactures to use low grade controls is beyond me the cost would be minimal to use HQ parts. The finish and fit has improved over the years on this stuff; it's about time they stop cutting corners on the controls.

You should tell that to Earl Slicks face.Maybe he'll refund you... for always being dissatisfied with everything you touch and ruin ,then bitch about it on KZbin . Why, ruin it for the rest of us who want to buy this guitar and play it, right. Try treating the guitar with respect...Maybe you'll learn to be happy.

Huge Xavier fan here guys, I also own a SL-52, LP style. I sing the praise of Xavier all the time, one good setup and fret filling and you've got a great guitar for the money, nothing can touch them for the price in my opinion, use them for recording and live all the time, cheers.

The 3 G bend seems like you are are really stretching the strings. Strings need to be stretched in order to keep a stable tuning. If they sit to long, like on a new guitar in a box, then they will need to be stretched again. You should probably apply your 3 G bend to E, A, D, B and e as well. Everyone should know this as it really does help with staying in tune. So, stretch those strings. Cheers😀

These Slick guitars remind me of the “student” models that were popular in the 50’s and 60’s, like the Les Paul Jr and Fender Jaguar, or the off brands like Univox. You know, stripped down, simple and affordable.

Thanks Phillip. I bought a Tele copy with humbuckers, basswood body, maple neck, decent electronics, tuners and bridge assembly, fully set-up, intoned and polished from Bargain Musicians for $179.95 shipping free. I haven't found anything that can touch it for that price, nothing. There were fret "sprouts"that needed attention and the bridge needed some re-adjustment. I cannot imagine how they can sell and ship such a great guitar for so little money. The humbuckers sound incredible BTW and really can rock the house. Amazing. No, I don't work for Bargain Musician :-)

I'm sold. If only Guitar Fetish had any in stock. I found a Marshall amp in my local dump and was able to get it working, so the cosmic message is, "You shall learn the electric guitar." I looked at a ton of beautiful looking guitars with fancy wood grain and finishes, but realized I would spend more time looking at them and polishing the finish than actually playing. I want to buy a tool that I'm not afraid to use and scratch up, but has quality parts. It seems like the Slick guitars focus on sound, quality parts and playing experience, and they found a way to bring the instrument in at a great price by going minimal on the finish. I think it's awesome that Guitar Fetish and Earl Slick worked so hard to make a great playing guitar available to more people at a sane price. I'm guessing they are so popular that they're not able to keep up with the demand.

My SLVC-54 (Slick Hard Tail Strat style/no longer made) is one of my go-to guitars. I love the single bridge position overwound humbucker & although I appreciate the oversized control panel for a potential tone control upgrade, all the tones I need can be achieved with only the volume control and the picking attack. Don't bother with a case & just toss it in the passenger seat while going to jam. It is always still in tune when I arrive. Satin Finished Neck, Bone Nut, Brass Bridge, Overwound Humbucker, Jumbo Frets & a finish only its Mother could love, what's not to like?

About 2 weeks ago i received a SL60 and 3 hours later I played a gig with it out of the box. I loved it sooo much I came home and ordered a SL50 which I received 2 days ago. They are both friggin' great! They are graphite nuts and brass strap pins. I am glad Phillip said the same thing I have been saying "There is nothing that needs to be swapped out on these guitars..." for $200 bucks?!?... oh yeah and you get a discount on their really sweet cases when ordered with the guitar. I also put myself on the list to be notified when the SL57 I want comes in. Hell, at these prices and quality I might get one of each...

Not having tone knobs is a deal breaker for some, but for me was another advantage as I have had tone knobs soldered out on other guitars. The tuners are great, the pickups are great, necks are great (on the thin side, but I like them), brass hardware, angled headstock, swamp ash body, graphite nut... RIDICULOUS!!!

I like it. Mine had no fret sprout. The frets were nicely finished. The neck fits the body nice and tight. (I did see a few people that said theirs had excessive gap). The finish on the neck is matte and the scarf joint for the headstock is well done. Overall I'd say its a bargain. I'd buy it again.
