Great video, as always. I've been fortunate to purchase some high end gear over the years, but I've played what I bought against other brands, and what I own just feels/sounds like home to me. I have a PRS Custom 24 (love the 85/15 pickups!), a DW Collector's Series maple kit, a Warwick Corvette $$, and my newest addition I've wanted for years, a Music Man Stingray 5 Special HH. In my humble opinion, these are some of the best instruments available, and it doesn't hurt that they all look great, too... Thanks, Phil!

huh. a guitar gear reviewer from outside Australia even knows about Cole Clark, let alone how damn good they are? upvote right there. the company was only 2-3 years old when i got mine. it's held up remarkably well considering it's a 12 string. EDIT, oh, and i think the black spirit is the best solid state amp EVER MADE, not just best of the decade, but yeah that price tho. yikes!

Hi Phillip I was lucky enough to be given a present from my daughter and her husband a 2015 Gibson SG special. Now before you poo poo it strangely enough my go to guitar was an ‘85 Fernandes Strat with fender pickups. My present sg had ‘57 humbuckers swapped in and I hated the G force tuning system so had Kluson Tuners put on it. I actually feel I found home with the wide neck! The strings are still the standard width but for bending on the high E string I love the feel of the neck! This is now my go to guitar and I love the fire burst finish on this guitar... absolutely beautiful. Maybe I was just lucky to find a guitar that I absolutely love the feel of. It is a part of me! Much respect to you from Australia mate!

Chase Vønn depends on what it is you do. People hate them because people who buy Gibson generally are blues guitarists who want a 50s or 60s les paul reissue. They NEED to update their guitars and get people excited, and they just keep failing at attracting new fans. They are losing BAD to esp and literally every other brand there is, because they keep doing a shit job with marketing and innovation. It isn’t all their fault, part of it is that the people who are buying Gibson now don’t want a modern guitar, but they are doing a poor job at appealing to both audiences, like fender is

RE: EHX Crying Tone - I've not used one, but the idea of a foot-operated pedal that had no real moving parts, hence no crackle, no repairs, and nothing mechanical to go wrong, was immensely appealing. The pivot-point was that it was largely incompatible with the pedalboard mentality. If it was 1978, and a gig setup consisted of a wah, fuzz, Uni-Vibe or phaser, and maybe an octave pedal on the floor, held together by patch cables, no one would have batted an eye at the Crying Tone's physical format. But that's a complaint from a person who gigs and needs to carry their setup around, plunk the pedalboard on the floor, and have it just work straight away. In a studio, it's a different world for the most part. So, not a BAD pedal or idea, just not fully compatible with the market needs.

I actually loved my Greta. I kind of regret selling it. One, it could plug into a cabinet and would give a really great sound at a lower volume, second, it had a very fun tone when played through the tiny speaker, and three, the mini-jack input sounded really cool for tube toned sound for music playback, four, it has an output where you can use it as pre-amp which was really, really cool. Especially old school jazz and blues sounded really cool through the mini-jack. I think another reason why I liked it so much is that back when I started to play had a small tube radio that my father altered so I could plug my guitar into and it had a really cool bedroom-level tube driven sound. The Greta really captured that experience.

Happy new year to all! I bought this year (2019) a 2015 Gibson Les Paul Studio in MM is a great guitar, I read all the information regarding the G-force tuners, so far even though they are almlst 5 years old, I took them off, cleaned the contacts, and removed all type of dust and they work really great, the more I use them the faster and more accurate they tune the guitar. I have no complains about the guitar itself, however just like modern or vintage people always tend to have different points of view. For me it's a great guitar!

@@metrostatetacticalicecream6945, actually it may snap your strings, one of the things I realized when I took the tuners and cleaned them is that if the strings is hitting the bridge can also give a little buzzing that the tuners (I don´t know why) tend to tighten the string more causing it to snap (not always, but, could happen). My suggestion to all g force users is to always calibrate the tuners when changing strings even if you are using the same strings gauge or different brand. On the other hand, if you do not like tuners take them off and the guitar is still a Les Paul, sounds great, feels great (even with the fretboard) and looks great. At least my LP has a nicely figured top that looks gorgeous.

For me the best guitars of the decade were the 2012-2017 Fender American Vintage series. The attention to detail on these guitars to make them period-correct is absolutely astounding, and you can find them used for $1,500 or less. The best amp of the decade for me was the 2555x Silver Jubilee reissue by Marshall (a reissue that was looonngg overdue). The best pedal was the Death by Audio Fuzz War, the people who use it (John Dwyer, Ty Segall) reinvented the way fuzz was seen and used by an entire generation, including myself.

@@lueysixty-six7300 Sorry, I realize I was quite vague. From a clean channel perspective, I think the vintage Fender fans will prefer the 6L6s (to agree with you)... but, this really isn't the amp for them, as not many people buy these amps for the clean channel. I was referring to channels 2 and 3 - the dirty channels. Channel 2 in particular has that classic 80s Marshall crunch that I grew up with (been playing since 1983). The midrange too, which I find better for leads versus the 6L6s (just seems to make my leads pop through more). To your point, 6L6s are known to be a bit cleaner sounding, with less break up. That would be appealing to the Fender crowd for sure (especially those that stick to the clean channel), but the 6L6 models also seem to be preferred by the modern metal guys (especially those that down-tune).

@@lueysixty-six7300 6L6 is a beam tetrode an EL34 is a Pentode. Generally a 6L6 will have a more rounded sound and an EL34 emphasises the midrange. I absolutely disagree with this statement, but everyone has different ears. 80s Metal sound is not something I consider „vintage“. solid state amps in general have improved tremendously in the last decade. @@shaft9000 The 5150 you're talking about was a Peavey, and was later renamed the 6505 (after Peavey's year of foundation, 1965, and their 40th anniversary, 2005) when Eddie Van Halen's contract with Peavey ran out. Eddie later partnered with Fender Musical Instrument Company and released the EVH branded 5150, which was the one referenced in the video. 5150 is a reference to the Van Halen album of the same name, which was itself named after a common psych ward code for "restrain the patient", or something like that.

Fender Pawnshop amps are awesome! They’re not branded Fender because they’re a different flavor. The Excelsior and Vaporizer are perfect for gigging. The best tone for roots to rock and inexpensive. I think they’re just too retro for Phil’s taste even though he likes basic Fender amps. It makes sense that if you like the way Kiesel guitars look that the pawnshop series wouldn’t be for you.

A tremolo circuit in a crybaby case, where trem speed was controlled by the foot.. a dual OCD/Klon in one box.. I then had asked him to make me a Big muff, with a rotary switch to cycle through all the different muff circuits.. he liked the idea but said it would be a lot of work so we shelved it.. glad to see GHS finally came up with that one.

@brendenbaughman662
@brendenbaughman662 4 жыл бұрын
Amen. There’s a reason the Boden became a modern classic almost immediately. It’s a game changer. Everybody talks about the design and feel, which is understandable because it’s wacky and striking. But it also sounds goddamn ridiculous. I have the double humbucker model and it’s the most sonically versatile guitar I’ve ever touched. The strandberg stock pickups are fantastic. I switched to a Boden from a really fantastic american deluxe telecaster, and it was a really intuitive transition because the Boden sounds so snappy and bright. It’s not a typical super hot and dark sounding metal guitar. I can’t say enough about the thing, I could go on. My only complaints are 1) the angled output jack, and 2) on the 6 string the parallel fret is at 0 which makes tight chord shapes high up on the neck difficult to finger even for my small nimble fingers. This would be mitigated had they put the parallel fret at 5, 6, or 7.

Another great video Phil. I have to say the absolute best solid state amps I’ve played, as pedal platforms that is, are the DV Mark Eric Gales and Greg Howe heads. They are relatively inexpensive and have enough headroom to keep up with anything you throw at them. Paired with a great cab (DV Mark Frank Gambale 2x12 for example) put them in the same league as many classics. Just for reference I also own a Marshall 62 Bluesbreaker, 59 Fender Bassman and a Vox AC30. With the amp only weighing about 5 pounds and the cab around 20 pounds I find myself using the DV Mark head and cab more than my beautiful sounding combos. Not just because of their back saving qualities, but because they sound great and fill a room with ease. Definitely try out the DV Mark Rawdawg with a DV Mark Frank Gambale cab as a super clean, high headroom pedal platform and you’ll see what I mean. Oh and I’m a humbucker guy, so anything out there about over compressing is truly nonsense. Thanks and keep up the good work my friend.

To attenuate loud amplifier speaker cabinets, I built a speaker booth with 4x8 styrofoam. The booth is 4'x4'x8' and inside has sound proofing, rugs and ceiling tiles. 4am jams don't alert the neighbors. Of course, I am not in an apartment. This allowed me to ignore all the IR and attenuators and in turn spend money on microphones and microphones preamps. After a few years watching Glenn Fricker and Warren Huart describe how they record guitar amps, with honorable mention to Eric Valentine, my old 70s and 80s amplifiers are returning to service on a home hobbyist level. Stay home, and rip it up at any hour. Of course, all thanks to Home Depot & Lowes and about $120. KZbin as a community and a platform for music releases has been the #1 most inventive achievement, and still serves as a great way to meet new musicians and collaborate on new music. Happy New Year Phil and Family and Friends.
