1987 - Mr. Gary was in the showroom at Cactus Pete's in Jackpot, Nevada. One of the most magnificent voices I had ever heard. I was performing at the showbar in the casino. It was not a good gig for him. On my breaks I would sit through as many parts of his shows as I could, then run back to my beer-drinking, cig-smoking regulars at the bar. Throughout the week, his room was virtually empty. At 4AM, on his closing night, we sat alone in the darkened theater. Almost tearfully I said compared to him, I was embarrassed to call myself a singer. John was very kind and certainly generous when he quietly said, "Never compare. Always do what YOU do."

Thank you for your story. I met him as a kid and he was kind and friendly person. My mom who just passed was a very great fan of him. He was a great person!

A lovely tribute to John Gary and his wonderful voice and to the beautiful actress Rita Moreno. Oh, the childhood memories! I'm 67 now, but I remember listening to Gary's album "Spanish Moonlight" on my parents' Hi-Fi. This song was one of my favorites. Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane!

I first heard John Gary singing on the radio in about 1973 when doing an architectural design assignment on a Sunday afternoon in Brisbane Australia. I did not know who the singer was then so I rang the ABC Radio Station and got the information then and went and found the LP of the Carnegie Hall Concert.

You know that he had two miniature air tanks inserted in his back and attached to his lungs, that's how he could hold those loooong notes
