I was taught to fry some bacon, rinse the cabbage, salt to taste add black pepper and let the cabbage cook to the desired tenderness. The cabbage will cook down without adding liquid. But i might try your way it looked pretty good.

With more liquid it makes it more soft. I think sometimes even cooked cabbage thats been almost steaming in a bit of liquid for a long time is still hard. I think I prefer it this way.
