When I saw you cut out that cabbage core, I laughed cause it reminded me of when we were kids and we would fight over who would get to eat it first. Sometimes the four of us would irritate momma some much she would stop and go upside our heads with a magazine. Then she would cut the cores into four pieces, put salt and pepper on them, and we would think we were in heaven. This would happen every time she cooked cabbage. Funny how food brings up happy memories from childhood. I love your videos. Keep them coming♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️!

Here's to all the Moms who taught us how to cook, cause I know my Mom was absolutely the best cook there was! 🏆
@duskahenry7913 жыл бұрын
I agree! My Mom and I had a terrible relationship in most senses of the world - but the woman could cook, and I took in everything she taught me. My younger sister never hung around for all those conversations - and she had a really good relationship with her. She once asked me why she taught me everything, not her. Well, she never was there for the "lessons" cuz she did not love cooking and never listened. I could do an instruction video just like this (if I had the desire) and y'all would put on some pounds. I also have most of her ŕecipe cards (well, ingredient lists), but if you did not watch her they are useless as they don't tell you how to get from here to "eatin" time! Those are all in my head also. Trying to remember and write those down now for my youngest!! She doesn't just want to do it, she tries. I can pass that on, no problem!!!! Maybe one day she will pass it on to one or both her girls!!

Love the channel! My parents were deep southerners from North and South Carolina. When it came to cooking cabbage it was simple. Bacon fat or some kind of pork fat, cut up cabbage, salt and pepper and depending on how my mother felt that day, maybe a "pinch" of sugar. Like her homemade cornbread she didn't add sugar to her yellow or white corn meal mix. In her already heated cast iron skillet along with her fat she'd place in the seasoning first on low heat to make those flavors come out, then add her cabbage. After a bit she'd stir her cabbage and let them fry for a bit allowing the goodness of the cabbage water to render out as the cabbage wilted. Then she would remove the fat meat (placing them on a plate for us kids to make a sandwich later )and add a little water. Lord have mercy, I can still hear the sizzle and smell the cabbage. She'd lower her heat to a simmer place a lid ontop and all us kids had to do was wait. Cornbread, Lake trout fish, cabbage and ice tea or Kool Aide . Memories! Tip. After cutting up or slicing her cabbage she always separated each cabbage layer. This made much more than leaving them in chunks or thick slices.

I had a small cabbage that had to be cooked. I went looking for a method, and found this video. I transcribed the ingredients and the instructions for your edification: Ingredients: 1/2 cup broth or water 1 small-med onion 1/2 bell pepper 1 small head of cabbage Salt Pepper Garlic powder Onion Powder Red Pepper Flakes Goya Jamon Seasoning packet Sugar (2 spoonfuls) Dollop of Bacon Fat Instructions: Add broth to pan and heat on low-medium. Remove outer leaves from Cabbage, cut it in half, then remove the core section Cut each Cabbage halves in 4 pieces each, then slice crosswise to make strips Wash strips in a colander, then add to skillet with the sliced Onion and Pepper Add the seasonings, Sugar and Bacon Fat Cover and simmer at medium heat ("5" on an electric range) for 10 minutes Remove cover and toss the Cabbage in the skillet Cover and simmer for 5 minutes, then serve I left out the sugar, Goya seasoning, and the bacon fat. As it so happens I have the exact same brand broth concentrate as Donna, except I have the "Roasted Chicken Base" flavor. In addition to Garlic Powder, I also used other seasonings from my spice rack. Additionally, I had browned and seasoned some chop meat (to which I added some shredded gruyere cheese) before cooking the cabbage. Adding the hot cabbage to the cooled chop meat/cheese mixture melted the cheese and warmed the meat. This combo dish was great (using Donna's Mom's method of preparing the cabbage) and I'll be enjoying the rest of it another day . . . !

I love cabbage cooked like this. I like to add a little extra “la-de-da”, whole pods of okra laid on top during the steaming. Serve it with some “chow-chow” relish.

You are just a joy! You brought back memories of being in my Gram’s farm kitchen, with the cabbage she just cut in “ the patch” ( what she called the vegetable garden). She sometimes made it in a buttery cream sauce. That was also delicious. Thank you so much

Yes. Sometimes I add creamed soups to mine. Adds another level of flavor to it..

Well you are an excellent teacher and your food really looks amazing. However we grew up using a utensil to cook the food with and one to taste it with but placed in a separate container. My mom used to make the best cabbage that was similar to yours. Be blessed!

I'm going to make my cabbage just like this from now on! I just have a real problem trying to cut it. That's why I don't cook it that often. I loved how you added the sausage for your Dude #1. Yummy!!! 😋❤❤❤❤❤

Hey Cynthia, I feel the same way about cutting the cabbage. When I don't feel like cutting, I purchase 2 bags of the shredded cabbage. The one used for Cole slaw.

I feel so validated after watching this. Often I will make a mean out of just cabbage and add a protein to it. A lot of times I do sausage and brown it a bit and remove it, then I do basically everything you did. Same seasonings, same method, even the same texture. Not too crunchy, not too soft and not soupy. Then just add the meat back in at the end and simmer until done. Thank you!!! ❤❤❤
