Philodendron Burle Marx An ABSOLUTE MUTANT

The Philodendron burle marx has one of the most unique growth styles I have ever seen. My assumption is that this is from some kind of mutation that has stabilized and allows this plant to just keep splitting and putting out additional growth points. The burle marx also comes variegated which is pretty cool!

My Burle Marx has grown so big that I’m overwhelmed to where to start to cut and prune! It’s vining and growing aerial roots like crazy it’s like a mutation upon mutation… 😅

Don't give up! As long as the cutting doesn't rot and the water isn't gross there's hope. I've had some cuttings take MONTHS to finally do something. :)

My green Burle Marx is a beast. It’s grown so big it’s out of control. My variegated one is very slow growing but it’s so pretty. I’m enjoying watching them grow.

I put mine on a moss pole, the weird growing pattern gets even weirder ans easier to see. The plant produced crazy amount of root growth and climbed everywhere. The pole is very bushy thanks to the unic pattern of growth.

That video reassured me, I got a P. Burle Marx variegata cutting last spring from somebody who obviously clones their plant a lot and seeing how it grew made me wonder if the plant was acting up because of high stress or something. I've now repotted it into a 6 inch pot and it's growing like a beast, its leaves are getting bigger and I chose my specimen well as it's almost 50/50 green and yellow and very stable even though it'll pop a 100% green (or lime/yellow) leaf once in a while. I'm not that much into variegated plants either but this one is a stunner, with variegation ranging from lime to yellow and nearly white all on the same plant! On a side note, I grow about thirty different Philodendron species and cultivars and ''Splendid'' is also one of my favourites. It's gorgeous, its leaves are getting big quite quickly, never had any pests, it's super easy to grow, it's vigorous and it seems to do well no matter what it's conditions are. I've kept mine in a very small pot for too long and it was still doing great. Recently chopped and prop'ed it as I feel like it's a very rewarding plant, so I'll be giving out a few of them on Christmas!

I got mine expecting it to be more of a bushy plant, but though it has that same growth pattern you are seeing it clearly wanted something to climb. I added a moss pole a few months ago and it is thriving! I still see at least one new growth point (usually 2 or 3) next to every new leaf, and it rooted into the moss pole easily. Definitely one of my unexpected favorites! It looks so nice with the moss pole and stays bushy and full.

I stole a cutting from my buddy’s backyard in Miami. With so many nodes and growth points I didn’t know where to cut it 😂. It’s hardy too. It survived living in a wine glass for a few days, TSA, and a flight in my carry-on.

Watch this video a while back and you sold me on this plant. For some reason it's been harder to find a plain green one then a variegated one that I'm not willing to pay extra for considering it's so unstable. Well today I found a thick bushy mutant green one for $20 in a 6-inch pot and immediately referred back to this video! Normally I don't do this but I even told him at the little independent plant store I got it from that this poor thing is going to be getting surgery as soon as it gets home LOL! Some for me some for Mom some for my sisters! LOL

I'm studying horticultural management on uni and i'm reading up on plant hormones right now and when reading about cytokinins i was immediately reminded of this video. My book (Plant propagation. Principles and practices. Hartmann & Kester) says that transgenic plants that overexpress the gene 'ipt', show increased levels of cytokinins and thereby show a growth pattern of reduced height(i guess short internodes), increased lateral branching and reduced chlorophyll destruction (deep green color). So i was reminded of this crazy plant and the short internodes and crazy growth pattern. It would be cool to do some research if this guy does, in fact, have this ipt gene :)

Philodendron selloum, usually sold as “Hope,” and its close relative, sold as Xanadu, also can be found exhibiting the same intense crowded growth habit. There are probably many more. It is possibly the result of heavy grower fertilization and optimal growing conditions. 😺✌️
