The American Civil War was the first time that combat was photographed and was by far the most extensively photographed war of the 19th century, surpassing even later wars. The war photography of the Civil War laid the groundwork for the war photography of the 20th century. But hey, at least you were right about that whole "being confident doesn't mean correct" bit.
