Chuang Tzu was a philosopher in ancient China, who, one night went to sleep and dreamed that he was a butterfly. He dreamt that he was flying around from flower to flower and while he was dreaming he felt free, blown about by the breeze hither and thither. He was quite sure that he was a butterfly. The Zhuangzi is a compilation of his and others' writings at the pinnacle of the philosophically subtle Classical period in China (5th-3rd century BC).

Zhuang Tzu or Zhuangzi are both fine to mention the same person. Combined -zi with the last name is a common way to mention those early days Chinese thinkers respectfully. For example, Confucius usually be mentioned as Kongzi in Chinese. Kong is his last name, and zi is to show the respect.

LOVED THIS!!! I was looking for a clip of The Good Place this whole time haha but given the theme of this video I can see why it wasn’t included. However it would be amazing to see it involved in a video! Either reaction on their interpretation of moral philosophy, or even a book review if the extensive reading list featured on the show! It’s honestly my favorite show of all time, through & through its phenomenal. It got me to love philosophy, made it easy to understand & it was comedic. Very good show. I’d definitely recommend it to someone who finds it difficult to dive into philosophy. I’d also like to know if anyone could find any fake books within the show-either mentioned or in the background!

3:05 Baudrillard‘s concept of 'Desert of the Real' relates to hyper-reality - the idea that reality has run away with the spoon (as it were) as, for us, reality as we perceive it is based in images that have built and built on top of each other, creating a self-referencing "simulacra" or copy without origins in reality. It ties back to Guy Debord‘s pioneering concept of a "Society of the Spectacle" which is a book you should read NOW.

We haven't evolved the sensory mechanisms necessary to perceive anything other than the physical reality around us because our survival as a species never depended on it - and as we are the most highly developed species on our planet, it's unlikely that any other animal would have this ability either. In a few thousand years, as technology and development will completely change our evolutionary path, these questions will increasingly occupy our existence, and we may see a certain number of more highly evolved brains that may be able to empirically quantify the existence of what reality truly is, whether a simulation, multiverse or some other thing. This is such a fascinating topic and one that those of us alive today will never find the answers to.

Thank you David for a charming analysis! He is one of my favourite contemporary philosphers. Although I would have liked him to include here in addition one more gem of a mini-series: Devs, which also explores philosophical questions and plays with the idea of a physical multiverse and (quantum) computer simulated/constructed universe in one package. Naturally these ideas are also explored in many other Sci-Fi shows, such as Star Trek and Stargate franchises throughout the seasons in one way or the other. And of course you don't necessarily need the Western Tech/Sci-Fi setting (as pointed out also by Mr. Chalmers and some commentators of this video) to discuss these ideas as they are found in different forms in different cultures, religions and philosophies as well.

You miss the point. You have never known any other reality but the one you were born into so how can you have any perspective? Remember the line: "Why are my eyes sore?" "Because you‘ve never used them before". The only way you can gain any perspective is by negating everything you *believe* to be truth and go from there.

@johnnyzakka2 жыл бұрын
In order for a simulation to be indistinguishable from reality we'd need immense processing power in computers. Something which we do not currently have. So I actually disagree with the odds he mentioned. Because we're either in the first (original) reality or the last iteration of that chain of simulations. So really, our odds are 50% that it's all real :)

This raises the possibility that there be a parent-to-child relationship to a previous time slice of myself. This self could be simulated through the tested method of a classic biography. So through fine-grained technology could transfer the self as a more complete resemblance of a sequence of selves. However, this seems to lack a sense of authentic legitimacy. An analogy is how an authoritarian political leader lacks authenticity. Functionally the authoritarian claims to be in control but lacks legitimacy even though people claim '"life is good". Real simulations appear to grey-mirror this political science analogy.

THE TWO WAYS OF ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE [Colossians 2-8] “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit after the tradition of man.” There are two ways by which man can acquire knowledge. The first way is known as Philosophy and is described to be begotten “a man centered way” because man has always the first word to his own understanding, his own mind, his own logic that in many times is accompanied by man’s fantasia. Man’s logic and thinking process have the first word in formulating ideas in order to express ideas, opinions or visions, or in order to further benefit mankind in medicine and science. The second way in acquiring knowledge needed for the Heavenly Truth for Salvation is thought Revelation by the Holy Spirit and it is known as receiving knowledge the Christ centred way. The precondition of acquiring knowledge the Christ center way (Revelation) is that religious Life is practiced according to the Will of the Triad God as delivered for the Salvation of man 2000 years ago with 85 Holy Apostolic canons (rules). Cannons of the Apostles www.holytrinitymission.org/books/english/canons_apostles_grabbe.htm#_Toc68522491- - These Holy Apostolic Cannons that enable the presence of Lord Jesus as the “head of His Body the Church” and as a High Priest and Mediator to His Father for each and every one, ensures man’s freedom, because they were set forth to free man from his biggest tyranny that is SIN, and they are aimed to set man free from his biggest tyrant who is the devil.- (Α Colossians 1:18) “He is the head of his body, the Church; He is the source of the body’s life”. orthodoxinfo.com/general/stjohn_church.aspx The TRUTH is revealed ONLY to those who have properly prepared to receive it those who love Him by obeying His commandments and it is RECEIVED PERSON to person, meaning that the TRIAD God delivers the knowledge personally to man just like he delivered Moses the Ten Commandments. [John 14:2] “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” Salvation means Salvation from death, and death means the Eternal separation from God.
