PHILOSOPHY - EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES 8: Should We Worry about Our Diminishing Sphere of Privacy?

Despite so many systems of surveillance being in place it's not necessarily true that we are being watched most likely we are not- at least not at an individual level. It is perhaps the mere existence and prevalence of the surveillance systems which creates in us the fear or paranoia that we might be being watched and so we change or adjust our behaviours accordingly- well most of us do. This is an extension of the Panopticon prison theory- the idea that people can be controlled by making them believe they are under constant surveillance even when no one is watching. Practically speaking surveillance is usually just something that's happening in the background as there simply would not be the time or resources for all surveillance systems to be manned and monitored all of the time. Surveillance systems are usually about protecting a space or people/ resources within a space so it's original justification is that it is there for our safety and protection by making people more inclined to behave themselves within that space. It's also there to protect private property and serve as a record of happenings within a space which can be reviewed and present as record or proof when required if something happens or goes wrong.

What I think is we all have a right to keep secrets if those secrets don't hurt others. If it would be okay to be put under surveillance, then it would also have to be okay to force us to tell all of our secrets, which would clearly NOT be okay. Another question: Would the people who are watching others also be watched? Or would a certain section of society just hoard power?
