How do you distinguish epistemic mental states from the inner sensations or perceptions? How can a subject distinguish between "I see" and "I think I see" or "I feel" and "I think I feel"

Great video, Mr. Westfall. Thank you for sharing this content with us. I would like to know what method was used to come up with the idea that there are exactly five mental states. Why not two or thirty-five? For now, this just seems arbitrary to me, as we have not been given any definition of what mental states are.

2 would be too few as the video shows and 25 would be too many since the 5 listed seem to be complete. Or can you think of a 6th category?

@@cube2fox Thank you for your reply. No, I can not. Anyway, I don't think the burden of proof is with me, as I'm not claiming the existence of anything, just questioning a statement. I just think we would have more clarity in the discussion if we were to look for a definition of what mental states are in the first place.

I think it's open for discussion exactly how we categorize mental states, but these five are probably fairly intuitive to most people. However, in watching this video, I became curious if emotions are really a different category from inner sensations like hunger, or if it's correct to categorize perceptual knowledge (that there are apples on the table) as being the same as semantic knowledge like "Ottawa is the capital of Canada." Probably different disciplines will have different ideas about how to categorize mental states, so a neuroscientist might sort them differently than someone who practices phenomenology. Ultimately, regardless of if you agree with these five categories or not, it's at least useful to define them operationally, and to be open to refining our language surrounding mental states as we learn more about them.

I have question, does the person lie about them selves, if they are down and out, but occasionally in clear moments they show, what they are made of? I mean this is legit question, because it is like 2 different people, one is wounded and tryes to get out of stuff, but don't really see stuff, other, have atleast some potential.
