Never have done studies like this, and I now know why I was unsuccessful in producing anything of worth. The vitality and surprising depth of this little painting have me inspired to try studies like this. Thank you huge!

I"ve been in a confidence funk lately but watching your brushwork and loose application got me inspired to paint today. Thank you!

Glad the videos are helpful Pat. Try thinking outside the box, change things up a bit. Maybe do some palette knife paintings, or use a limited palette or color scheme.

This is so helpful! Using the limited palette you show makes so much sense!

Now I see how the mood of the painting is influenced by your choice of those three colours! A good demonstration, thankyou.

Very practical and useful information. I've been struggling a bit with muting and greying off my colors and this really helped me understand things a bit better. It also helped with seeing large value shapes and receding warmth. Thanks so much for the video!

This video is just what I've been looking for... a simpler muted palette. Many thanks.. Might you consider videos with a muted palette with any of these?---seascapes/surf/tide pools/beach/any marine subject? When we're beside big water, it doesn't take much cloud cover to produce lighting much like in your excellent painting here.

Thanks Phil, I do have more planned, I'll work on some water related videos.

Another great video Phil. Have you considered doing a full course on skillshare or equivalent? Those platforms are crying out for instructors who know how to paint properly

Love your examples for muted color based on shapes and values. Your demo is very useful. What are you using for your palette? Wood? Do you have any examples of nocturne paintings?

Hi Candace, Glad you enjoyed the video. It is a birchwood palette with about 6 coats of wood sealer on it. I recently did a show of 10 daylight and 10 moonlight paintings, heres the link: artzline.com/shows/

Hi Mr. Phil , do yours the same colors with all the paintings or you chose your color depends on the subject you want to paint , thank
@philstarke.artist2 жыл бұрын
i use the same colors with every painting. I will add or take away a color once in a great while but thats the palette I always use.

If you wanted to add detail, would you let the painting dry?
@philstarke.artist2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I have to wait until it dries, If I get too much wet paint on the canvas.But I do paint most of the painting wet into wet.

@@philstarke.artist Thank you for your generosity in sharing your time and information. I struggle in this area because I don't seem to be able to get very far past the block-in stage before the next layer starts to "slide" rather than stick on the previous layer. I have gotten to where I do my block-in with acrylic to avoid waiting so long to dry. I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot!
