One correction: this is the BEST Moma. Also probably one of the greatest phish jams of all time. There is a sense of perfect unity among the band in this song. It's... it's... it's perfect.

As a jazz pianist I'm always so impressed with Page's percussive comping under Trey's solos. He's so interactive! I wish they'd zoom in on his keyboards more in this take! Jazz musicians could learn a thing or two from this group's chemistry

i was tripping lastnight and thats ALL i could think of. these guys do so many pieces of music (not just songs) that the highest level of musical education would very much appreciate and want to study. this isnt just a drug band. these 4 guys are music genius’ and i dont use that phrase lightly

My devotion is split down the middle. Saw my first Dead show in 87 at MSG. Was blessed to be a part of their late career renaissance, which in my opinion started to fade in 92. The baton for life changing live shows was handed off in late ’91 when I saw my 1st PH at the Capitol in Port Chester, NY. It’s the preverbal apples and oranges.Jerry was more prone to tickle my heartstrings where Trey melted my face. Thank god Trey and co have adopted a healthy lifestyle. They will be @ for a long time.

@@lokispeicher8103To each their own of course, but I don't understand why people loathed Vince so badly. I absolutely love the sounds and grooves he brought to the table. Not the same as with Brent, but just more different interesting sounds and feelings. Same as with all their keys players. I'm just infatuated with the different kinds of Dead they helped produce.

@@grecorobert97 I appreciate your positivity brother! Excellent way to look at things. Did you ever wonder why Vince was never included in any of the post-Jerry incarnations? Chimenti and Barraco (sp?) aren't complaining about said omission I reckon....Samba In the Rain? Way To Go Home? nope...Ok in light of your positive spin I will admit that I did rather enjoy his take on Tomorrow Never Knows...I was so on "team Brent" that there's a good chance that I would have rejected anyone trying to fill his seat now that I think about it...One Love

This version never fails to take my breath away. I always felt that, given the intensity and raw power of Trey's solo on this Moma, it's like through his playing you are truly hearing a man screaming in pain over the decision he has just made. That's just my interpretation.

Thats what makes phish one of the greatest bands of all time, the fact that they arnt making music for the money they make it for the pure artistic joy it brings them and in turn us how many other bamds openly let their fans record and distribute or trade their music like jerry said once its been played it belongs to the people.i remember way back when napster was big and alot o bands (metallica) comes to mind first were bitching and crying about how it was taking food outa their mouths lol i never reallh cared for them but after that crybaby shit just shows how much some people really care bout nothing other then the paychek

This is my favorite Moma for sure. Just crystal clear, precise, and jams way into outer space. Don't care if it's 2.0 and Trey's guitar sounds thinner than ever. The Free and Possum are absolute fire as well in this show.

Trey def played off his TAB 2000/2001/2002 jazzy influenced band and brought that tone to 2.0. I myself love the Trey tone from later 1.0 but prefer Gordon's sound in 2.0. I remember hearing that he canned the ross compressors which was what boosted his tone to cut through the mix. I'm still very found of 2.0 even though it was very hit or miss. If it hit, it slapped, if it was a miss it was horrible.

He probably wasn't even getting very high at that point, he is a walking scarecrow, at some point the effect of drug diminishes. I think he gets in zone regardless of the drug consumed. I saw phish at Dicks and they can f-ing rip it with no buzz on whatsoever. I play myself, quit using everything several years ago, and playing effect is much more powerful with no inhibition imho. Don't need oxy to get there.

It’s so cool to see them dig the fuck into the music despite everything going on. In a lot of footage from this time period, the band looks dejected while Trey wastes away in front of them. Here the darkness comes through but the band is enjoying the moment.
