This was a magical night. My memories of this show are rather fuzzy... I was 20 years old and having an absolute blast with my friends. We all arrived to the show in separate groups but found each other and sat behind the stage losing our minds. I also remember leaving the garden that night and we walked outside where reality hit us in the face having been transported to somewhere else over the course of those 3 sets. As we got out into the cold air, the cops were marching down the street having just swept the crowd out of Times Square. There we are a bunch of kids in altered states seeing lines of cops on horse back confused by this new crowd around them. What a wild night.

We didn’t realize the Garden and our hotel were so close to Times Square- we only bothered to look at proximity of our hotel to the venue. All the thousands(?? it was A LOT) of “normal” people outside were a massive shock, especially because it was not like that at all the night before. I still can’t believe it’s been 29 years.

I remember the cops rolling through on motorcycles and clearing the fuck out of the place with a crazy show of force. Maybe it was the acid, but it was a huge wakeup as they cleared the area and told us in their special way "you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here" What a trip

Keep in mind that Jerry Garcia died in Aug 95, and a huge number of deadheads switched to Phish. Most fans were deadheads, too, but after Jerry passed, the crowd sizes scaled up like mad. Phish was the new king of jam bands. My first show was Barre VT, 11/23/91. There were about 300 fans. Virtually everyone was a deadhead. This was back when many people covered their cars with stickers.

My first show was 2/11/93. I still get a knot in my stomach when I think of how the scene changed after Jerry died. I didn’t see the dead until after I saw Phish. I kind of did it backwards. But I did go hang out in the parking lot of the Spectrum outside of a Grateful Dead concert in September 1990 when I was in high school just to party so I did see the scene in 90 but didn’t get there until 93. But yeah, it gives me the ick at how gross it got.

I feel like a broken record when I chime in to once again state that I was at the show you're listening to. I went to a bunch of shows in the 90s, and I can remember many things about this NYE 95 show. It was my first time in Manhattan for New Year's, so it was amazing to feel the energy of the city, and to appreciate that Phish had really made it - continuing to play arena shows and festivals. They went all out during that run. It was a fantastic show, and I really felt like they'd given us an incredible holiday gift. I've not tried to add my voice to a vocal jam yet, but may feel moved to do so in the future. Thanks for the reaction, Walter.

You've taken another step into a larger world ;) Night and day from the 2012 YEM vid, going into pure improv sections and another fun vocal jam... re: vocal jams -- most stand mouth agape watching the great visuals CK5 is throwing down during it, and depending on your "state" you're either giggling wildly, listening intently, slightly freaking out, or some get turned off :) Next YEM's should be some more straight ahead bangers like 12-31-93 where Trey just lays it down. Cheers!

There are so many of us who are supporting your journey, living vicariously through you experiencing this band for the first time. Like watching my daughter open Christmas presents. Also need to promote 11/14/95 Orlando Stash>Manteca aka Stashteca. There's a video of it too. It's not an easy read but I know you can handle it. One of the most intense 30 minutes of Phish there is. NYE was Phish's 81st "ticketed" show in 1995; May Lowell Benefit, 22-show Summer Tour, 54-show Fall Tour, 4-night Holiday Run. I was fortunate to attend 80 of them and it's easy to say this night was the perfect summary of everything that happened musically that year! This was their 3rd show at MSG, preceded by the night before and their 1st MSG show the year before on 12/30/94. It was to be their first ever New Year's Eve in the famed Madison Square Garden. It was exciting for the band and for those of us that had been following them around for some time!! Start to finish, they brought the energy and their musicianship, and shared their beloved Gamehendge with the masses, all while being perfectly Phishy. We got a couple of songs from their Halloween costume cover of Quadrophenia, fave classics, new tunes, acappella, along with some deep, out-there, jams. They continued their NYE gag tradition with the Phish Time Laboratory complete with Fishman as "The Baby New Year". They closed the show brilliantly with the YEM that you just deeply appreciated, but followed it with a huge 148 song bustout of Sanity (my first ever in 112 shows), then closed the set with the raucous Frankenstein, and an encore of Johnny B. Goode. Good times in deed!!! Thanks for being you @Walterooski, for being awesome, for bringing the positive vibes, and for breaking down our favorite band with such a fresh perspective!!! PS- "Trey-tana", never heard that before :) As far as I know you get the copyright ;) PPS- Please react to the 12/29/94 Providence David Bowie to hear some uber tasty whispering by the band, after the most incredible musical journey happens. We just celebrated the 25th anniversary of that moment a few days ago! (Include the Digital Delay Loop as it bleeds into Bowie :)

Mike uses a pedal called the "Meatball" by Lovetone for those super wet sounds (as well as some kind of flanger I believe?). Im not 100% sure if he had that one by this time, or if its another envelope filter, but its such a classic Mike sound that he uses all the time. (DWD intro is a good example) As a side note, the YEM from 6/11/94 at Red Rocks is in my opinion the BEST YEM theyve ever played. I'd love to see you check it out at some point in the future!

I was lucky enough to be there for both 12/30-12/31. For me, I can’t say I Enjoyed Myself more at either of these shows. They were both outstanding, but each had a different feel to them. Simply put, 12/30 had more of a dark, psychedelic, & trippy feel to it, like hanging out with friends from college. In contrast, 12/31 seemed more like a fun, festive vibe. A celebration that’s more like a holiday family gathering. Really enjoyed your breakdown of this show, and it was nice to reminisce about the great times I had 30yrs ago. I saw 21 shows in 1995, and this was a perfect way to close out the year. Liked & subbed to your channel.🎸🌵🎹⭕️

Only because 93 was magical on its own right with the addition of Page’s baby grand on stage and of course, the big ball jam and the secret language. And they were still really small, so there was no separation between us and the stage and then during Mike’s Kuroda turned out the lights and then put strobe lights on and used fog machines. I was there. Absolutely amazing. I’m editing as I watch the video cause I have to pause it. Part of me feels like you really should watch the concert because you’re missing some of it by not seeing them on stage at Madison Square Garden. On the Phish KZbin channel they have separate videos one recently of Mike’s rig and one I think from summer 2023 of Trey‘s rig. OK, all joking aside because I can laugh too, but please understand how hearing some of these lyrics by Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall from the age of 19 for over three decades can help shape you. Bro, they are my Lennon/McCartney. I didn’t realize that this was only one song. It’s safe to say you are team vocal jam, welcome. Not everybody likes the vocal jam. Some people chitchat to their neighbor, but that’s just rude if you ask me, some people watch in amazement or take a sip of water or whatever, some people go to the bathroom and some people dance, like me sometimes. 1995 Phish is not the same as 2012 Phish. There are a lot of different variables and I’ll just leave it at that.

You are going to WEEP when you hear the 11/17/97 Ghost. For my money, the peak of Phish’s fully type 2 improvised, one of one, never to be heard again jamming. Sounds absolutely nothing like anything else they ever played. Just pure emotion from funk strutting to introspection to joy to melancholy and back. And they made it appear out of thin air one night. Those type 2 jams where they completely escape the space a song usually inhibits-the “canvas” as you call it-that’s my favorite phish. But of course i agree the best course of action is to spend time exploring 94-95 before seeing where the evolution took them 🫡

I was at this years new years run, all 4 shows and there were some incredible moments. You want to listen to the Harry Hood and the 84 second note Trey plays. Mike is dirty on this tour. His new rig setup is nice. Check out the video they posted on it. Very interesting and a piece from his mom taboot.

Trey is the bandleader in that he is like that lady borg that was the leader of the hive mind. but also he is the primary songwriter. on stage though they all play off each other as to where to go and when to land it. one example i forget the show and the song but at one point Page triggers a cat sound sample from their song Your Pet Cat by mistake Trey looks over at Page who is like oopsy but Trey immediately drops into the Your Pet Cat riff and the whole band segue into that song for a bit before finishing the one they were playing. Also not usually a fan of the vocal jam but this one is aces and this YEM is easily top 5 ever. Also also fun fact Trey isnt his real name its a nickname his real name is Ernest Anastasio III so Trey as in the 3rd.

Another live YEM?! Didn’t have it on my bingo card but you do you! This is your journey…we are here for it. Get to Billy Breathes already though lol! You’re really going to like that album. “I feel the feeling I forgot”-somehow I just know that lyric is going to give Walterooski the chills. Billy Breathes is such a representative album and a growth album. Dying to see your reaction to it because I know how damn good that album is so I know you’re going to love it bc you clearly get it! All in good time though. Gonna enjoy this for now… And no, the longest KZbin video you ever make it going to be your reaction to the midnight set from Big Cypress!!!

By the way, all the services like Spotify got the info wrong on A Live One. A lot of it says stuff was from the Clifford ball but that is incorrect. Nothing is from the Clifford ball. Don’t know why they said that but it’s wrong.

Trey is the only one who can rip cord a song & they play most of the stuff him & Tom write, so I'd say that makes him the band leader. Also, he sings most of the songs & does all the setlists for the most part. Not that they're not all fantastic, but this is arguably the best YEMs they've ever played. So there's that.

Great show. Great YEM. I feel like 95 was the year Phish hit their stride. From here to the IT fest in 03 was the first high water mark for the band. Which brings me to my point, my favorite YEM was at the IT fest in 2003 kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6mcgWuVhb6Lr5Y. I feel like the IT fest was the culmination of the blow off top of Phish 1.0 which started at Big Cypress. They definitely turned the page that weekend. And that YEM jam had an intensity I've not heard in that song before or since. The epic of epics. Sorry to digress but I can't hear YEM and not think of (and share) the best one I ever heard.

The majority of YEM is actually composed...same with Fluffhead, Divided Sky, Squirming Coil and a bunch of other of the early stuff Trey wrote, even up through songs like Guyute, Time Turns Elastic, and Petricor more recently. Yeah, they're long songs, but so is Supper's Ready and thats composed. Remember, Phish played Genisis into the rock and roll hall of fame playing Watcher of the Skies (also on the same album as Super's Ready iirc)... Especially early phish had a lot of early Genesis prog type influence and a huge Miles Davis influence when they did jam, especially early in their time as a band...the crazy thing is the parts that did go into more jazzy harmonic type stuff, like that drum bass breakdown...I've heard December 95 phish described as playing insanely recklessly (like driving on the edge of a cliff), always looking to push up against the edge and topple over, but each one driving individually, but as a group...and they didn't fall off the cliff. Check out some pre-1993 live stuff when you can...you can see the evolution of their sound in the albums, but watching them weave and grow their sound live from tour to tour, it's wild...also, 91 and 92 is before they hit it really big and a lot of those shows are still in smaller venues and kinda the original crowd that had been there from the start

So, regarding the Clifford Ball refrenced w/r/t A Live One. On ALO, (this may be wrong) since they hadn't cleared recording for release w/ venues, they listed all performances as having been from "The Clifford Ball", but are actually from a bunch of different shows. In 1996 they threw their second two day festival The Clifford Ball. Only reason I mention is to drop the video for the soundcheck. It's *fascinating*. Not songs, just them jamming/sound-checking, half just goofing around. A must watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYuxmaWeqsyZi7ssi=x_kTbRbkxBGlkFKm

I'm sure it would trigger a different level of attention and possibly sink the whole effort, but when you get up to the Story of the Ghost album you should consider doing a reaction video to their documentary Bittersweet Motel, which was filmed from August '97 through August '98.
