@35:13 "Which would force this to be blue." R1c10 and r1c11 have to be the same color at this point because of the 23 pair in row 5, so it breaks even worse. It's not important though because you've already proved orange in r1c10 is broken. Edit: oh, apparently you hadn't quite broken orange...so maybe this is important.

Here's a cute trick - around 38:00, the 23 pair in r5 forces r1c10 and r1c11 to always be the same color. This makes resolving the r1c10 color much easier
@LithmusEarth

I said that same thing. the 23 pair says that they must be the same color. from there combine with his 5v7 theory is actually 5v8 and you can break the 8 so that it's only 5. you get a like sir. The only difference is i said it around the 36 minute mark, but that's the same thought space he's in.

No, that is not new. I call it a Simonized cell. That is where there is an easy way to fill in a cell but he finds a longer harder way to do it. He did that the other day when he found a cell that had to be a 2, but he even said he was not going to put it in yet, and finally found it was a 2 by a completely different reason.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Жыл бұрын
@@bobh6728 Are you referring to the previous video, "A sudoku with a bonus objective"? I mean, he had a reason for not filling in the 2 straightaway - namely, the bonus objective referenced in the video title. I don't remember him needing a different way to get the 2 - he was just waiting until he had the 30+ digits placed before using the given digits.

I was getting along reasonably okay, albeit with frequent help from the video, but I made a big error by misunderstanding the rules. I assumed that the puzzle only uses the digits 1-9 and therefore no region could ever have more than 9 cells. But the rules do specifically say "number" not "digit." Based on this erroneous reading of the rules, I concluded that r4c10 must be blue to avoid joining up three previously disjoint orange regions into a size-11 region. Things only started going wrong when it came time to deduce the value of r7c10 and I found there was no possible fill. I either forced myself to have an orange 4 region directly next to a blue 4 region or the blue/orange count in the column was wrong. With the benefit of hindsight, I suppose this is precisely the kind of "trick" one should expect from Phistomefel. He's not named after the devil for no reason, after all...

There was a bit of beautiful logic missed that would have simplified a part of the solve. @46:00 simon mentions that the cells in r7cs78 are different, and that they sum to 6. so the orange one is a 4 or 5, since it connects to the 2 cells above. with this knowledge, we can say that r6c9 is blue. if it wasn't, it would make the orange in r7cs78 a size 6 region. this blue cell really simplifies the logic @58:00, r7c11 is not a 5 or it would need to connect to the blue cell to get the arrow to count to 5, but in doing so would make it a 6 region, a contradiction. it being a 4, it can't connect to the blue cell at all, placing an orange in r6c10.
@rentalcustard
@rentalcustard Жыл бұрын
At 21:20 or earlier, you can see that the 23 at R3C6 can't be 2. If it were 2, it would be the colour in the 6-set which appears 4 times. So then you either put a 4 of the same colour next to it, which breaks the puzzle, or you put a 2 of a different colour next to it, which also breaks the puzzle.

@49:06 "9 We're almost getting to the point where it's not possible." You didn't notice the 3 cells in the top left and that's 12, but it's even more broken because it forced r3c1 to be an orange 1 which adds r2c1 to the blue count and it forces r2c2 to take r3c2 so it's not also a 1 region giving an additional 3 blue cells and we're up to 16 blue cells in the region...and the arrow can only see 10 cells total. (You did notice those 3 in the top left a little later.)

1:25:35 This way around the blue clue must be a 3, if it's a 5 the purple would have to be blue and would connect with the clue resulting in a far-larger-than-5 region (combined with previous work this means the 5-3 is resolved the same way around regardless of the shading)

The whole time Simon was playing with the upperleftmost arrow, trying both 2 and 1, it was driving nuts watching him fail to notice that it simply could not be 2. He made pink squares and green squares surrounding a hypothetical two on the arrow, but did not carry that same logic to very next square. If he had looked at them, he would have realized there was the square in the middle of the three green squares had nowhere to go that would not have connected it with one of the other two green squares, thus forcing it to be a 3 or higher. He kept saying that about arrow square while completely missing it for the square it was directly pointing at.

I was surprised that I was able to solve this one. I did get stuck near the end, but put it aside for a bit and came back to it, and finished it up. There is a new feature Sven has added to the software that is nice for this sort of puzzle: you can change the pencil marks from listing all the candidates, such as 123456789 to "compact" 1-9. It is under settings (cog wheel-> Experimental->Compact Pencilmarks: On). I don't use this feature when doing Sudoku, but I found it helpful in this puzzle to show the range of possible values.

I gave up trying to follow solving it along by myself after that mistake, because I would have to start from the beginning.

Meh, I was on the right track until I started to use the logic "if I color this cell in X, that color's region will exceed 9 which is not valid". So instead of 13 region on top right corner I had three 6-1-6 regions which messed up the value of an arrow and thus everything broke down :(

I solved it, but because I entered Ds in the 13-region and Ks in the 20-region, as these letters represents 13 and 20 respectively in a base-21+ number system, it told me that my solution was wrong. I tried removing the Ds and Ks, which fortunately caused my solution to be correct. It would be nice if the app supported letters for values higher than 9 and that setters at the same time remembered that it is supported, or that the app completely ignored letters when checking the solution

Also, cells with arrows only pointing in any of the four cardinal directions can only be as high as the amount of the cells they see minus 1, like the up arrow in the very last column can't be a 5 because it has to include the cell itself, making it a 6.

Seems this would be much harder on paper, because there's nothing in the rules restricting cell numbers to one digit, only Sven's software is.

41:30 There's another way to look at this logic that ultimately is about equivalent to what Simon does but I think deserves mention just because it is such an elegant and pretty thing - currently the 23 clues both see two of their own color with one unknown cell to go. Since the clues are different colors, if the unknown cells are different colors that will affect the 23 clues' counts in the same way, resulting in the same final count and breaking fillomino rules. Therefore r1c10-11 must be the same color (and since we know the logic on the clue in r1c10 won't allow both to be orange they must both be blue).

I don't understand: what does "far too large" mean? There is nothing in the rules prohibiting large regions. 1:00:22
@sagov9
@sagov9 Жыл бұрын
The problem is: the number in the cell with the arrow needs to indicate both the size of its region as the number of oranges it sees in the column. If all of the selected cells were orange, the size of the region would be much larger than the number of oranges the arrow cell sees.

@1:02:50 Simon finally figures out that the blue cell can't be 5, but you can sort this out using the basics of his logic about the orange region being too big without even thinking about the blue region. Since the orange region can be at most 5 large, the corner cell between the two dominoes can never be orange or they would connect and become at least a 6 cell region. Since now this has to be blue, if you made the blue cell to the right be 5, then both the cells to it's left have to be blue and then they connect to that cell and form a 6 cell region.

Took me a bit under 2.5 hours. Mirrored Simon's solve pretty much exactly. Was stuck for a while after failing to realize the top-right cell's color was already determined, thereby resolving the 2-3 pair in row 5. The thing I really like about Phistomefel puzzles is that, while they may be lengthy, they usually never feel out of reach, for me at least. This is a great example of that. There never seemed to be more than one or two usable arrow clues at any given time, which limited the noise that makes lesser puzzles a real grind.

8 rows complete and just wanna tap out. Started on the topright got 1/8 done and stuck came to look where he opened(topleft). Got 1/4 done but had 2 grids/color system cooked dinner, Manage to meld the 2 systems, midphase got even harder. Came back to see how he got to the midphase ..heh he endeds up with 4 colors to but didnt seem to struggle w how to match them. Would love to see someone design one where Simon has to take a breather not cuz of an appt but due to the puzzle... Think he quit one? That thermo wheel one still takes the cake tho.

A number of times i found myself screaming at the screen - this one is easy, i did that in 5 seconds flat it's just about how one arrow affects the other! But... somehow Simon solved the entire thing in half the time i did 🙃 Once you know which way to look you can really appreciate how smart the puzzle construction is, there are no clues that aren't perfectly placed to make the deductions interesting and brain stretching. Phistomefel does it again, and so does Simon, thanks to both!

1:03 When Simon made r7c11 a 4, he had proven that the blue region couldn't be a 5 if it took r7c9-10. When he said that made the region a size 4, did he disprove that it couldn't be a 5 if it took r9c11? I know I disproved that when I solved it (can't remember how at the moment), but I'm not sure that Simon has definitely ruled it out at this point in his solve...
@RichSmith77

It's an arrow restriction rather than a region size restriction. He's looking at how many blues the arrow can count in the row. The central orange pair, above the arrows, are 4 or 5, meaning one of the arrows is counting at least 4 oranges in the row to the left. So there's at most 2 blues to the left of the arrows. One of the arrows will be blue, so up to at most 3 blues left of, and including, arrows. For r7c11 to be a 5 on the arrow, it would have to see all 3 of these, plus 2 immediately to its left. Simon's proved these cannot both be blue, so the arrow cannot be a 5.

Simon about 36 minutes in you can deduce look at the 23 pair that they are pointing out, if the orange is a 3, both of those white cells are orange. if the blue is the 3, both of those cells are blue, they are always the same color, because they give one for the 3 and take away one for the 2. until you bring up the 5/7 argument i would have just marked them both green, and not known anything from there. that means, as you are doing your 5v7 argument, 7 isn't actually valid. you aren't picking up it's neighbor cell making it 8, and it cannot see 8 orange cells, it's not orange. it's blue. it's a blue 5. and it picks up the cell behind itself. and yellow is orange.
@LithmusEarth

After an hour an eighteen minutes in, your little 3/4 HAS to take the right cell if it takes a cell at all. it never makes an overturned "T" shape, that space is always blue. why? if you make that space orange instead (row 6 column 2) you create this little blue island in column 1, next to that orange 1... which can't grow or it attaches to that T shape you just made, therefore, cell (R6,C2) must always be Blue. I haven't figured out yet if the orange is 3 or 4 yet though. Just maybe you could use that information to solve that portion.

1:19:41 Okay, Simon. "If [R5C2] is orange, then [R6C2] is blue. If [R5C2] is blue then then [R6C2] is blue." You just said, regardless of the first cell, the second cell is always blue. You proved my problem/solution through a similar means, but then you don't mark that that cell is blue.
