3:33 it's because in these unstabilized tanks, the bow machine gun was the only one that could provide effective fire while moving. Eventually the weak spot cost became too high for the benefit given, so they stopped appearing. Then stabilized main armament showed up and made it completely irrelevant anyway.

I think the gun port was mainly to defend the tank against infantry trying to rush the tank from the front, or to provide frontal defense when the turret was looking the other way. People tend to forget that the worst enemy of a tank is infantry and that has been proven throughout the years. Even leopard 2's get clapped because they didn't have infantry support and they got overwhelmed. In the cold war they weren't really necessary anymore

Been through a 3 month burnout now because of War Thunder and things around covid. For War Thunder always start off with finding someone willing to squad up with you, kind of eases off the bad side of the game. If you don't feel like playing it, don't. Wait a few days and try again. What also helps is to not play the same nation / BR, find your favorite vehicles in which you have fun and keep those when you really want to have a good time. For me it's the AVRE or the American T14, I actually enjoy heavy tanks a lot so I find some BR's where they excel and stay there. Still the best thing is to avoid it completely lol.

I think my grandfather might've trained in one of these at Aberdeen. I have a photo of him with a group of recruits in front of a tank that looks vaguely Pershing-ish. But I could never quite identify as it was slightly weird compared to a normal Pershing. He was trained to be a tank commander but the war ended before he went into combat.

Possibly M46 Patton. Not to be confused with M47 Patton or M48 Patton. The M46 Patton was the M26 Pershing Kai Plus Refit. The M46 corrected all of M26's shortcomings. The US Army was against the M26 going to war. It wasn't ready, but were overruled like with the M16 Infantry Combat Rifle because the Navy SEALs had AR-15s.

This statement alone encapsulates the entire feeling of playing US Tanks at 4.0-5.3 BR. You get a decent shell in tanks like the M18 GMC or the Shermans with 76mm cannons, but overall your armor is 4x worse than your enemies and you'll be blown up with ease before you can even locate the weak spot on the enemy Tiger E. Literally the only time you get upgraded armor for a heavy tank is when you go from the M6A1 to the T26E5, which is a full 1.7BR difference from 5.0 to 6.7. There are upgrades to turret armor, but that means very little when any 75mm gun can relatively easily punch through you head-on and any 76-90mm gun can just ignore your armor like it's a lightsaber going through paper. Medium tanks aren't any better, the first armor upgrade is from the M4A2 at 4.0BR to the T25 at 6.3BR, and even THAT armor upgrade is only about 10mm more than the M4A2. The next substantial armor upgrade is the M26, which serves as a medium tank in 6.3BR that has basically the same armor values as the M6A1 4.0BR heavy tank. If the M6A1 gets outgunned at 4.0BR, what do you think is gonna happen to a medium tank with the same armor 2.3BR higher up? As it stands, it seems like the only thing American tanks are relatively consistent with is making light tanks/tank destroyers that have large guns and lots of speed because they have paper armor. This still kinda sucks because the only way to do great in those tanks seems to be to snipe in the back of the map and hit the enemy before they see you, or do large flank manuevers that are easily countered by a few MG shots to your engine that'll leave you stranded and ready to die.

I'll admit, I didn't think much about the T-26E5 when they announced it. Like, yeah, okay, another tank to add to the deluge of 6.3 vehicles the US has, super. But it has really grown on me. The added armor *does* make a difference and the 90mm M3 is as reliably good as it always has been.
