@Zvox3 жыл бұрын
@@chieludz no, the song is literally about the end of the world. you're reading an upbeat ending because this version plays the final part waaaaay more upbeat than the original. it's not supposed to be literally upbeat, it's supposed to be ironic. as in "well, everything is fucked but at least the world is ending so we don't have to deal with this shit anymore". the song isn't about 2020, it's about the dogshit state of the planet. there's endless references to climate change and things completely unrelated to the pandemic throughout the entire song.

Some Song and Waltz #2 by Elliott Smith are ‘my’ songs…No matter how much I try to have new ones…And he cannot write me a new one anyhow… I know Phoebe Bridgers has her own thing but I still feel as though these two songs by Elliott Smith are what I believe to be what her music and lyrics are most informed by and what they are hinting at conveying ...And you do not have to agree or even know wtf I am talking about...Just listen...It's well-understood... First the mic, then a half cigarette/Singing, "Cathy's Clown" That's the man she's married to now/That's the girl that he takes around town She appears composed, so she is, I suppose/Who can really tell? She shows no emotion at all/Stares into space like a dead china doll I'm never gonna know you now/But I'm gonna love you anyhow Now she's done and they're calling someone/Such a familiar name I'm so glad that my memory's remote/'Cause I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note Here it is, the revenge to the tune, "You're no good You're no good, you're no good, you're no good" Can't you tell that it's well understood? I'm never gonna know you now/But I'm gonna love you anyhow I'm here today and expected to stay/On and on and on I'm tired/I'm tired… Looking out on the substitute scene/Still going strong XO, mom/It's okay, it's alright, nothing's wrong Tell Mr. Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone In the place where I make no mistakes/In the place where I have what it takes I'm never gonna know you now/But I'm gonna love you anyhow… ………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Elliott Smith- Some Song (again) It's a junkie dream, makes you so uptight/Yeah, it's Halloween tonight and every night/Hear you scratch your skin, your sandpaper throat/You're a symphony, man, with one fucking note… Charlie (‘dad’) beat you up week after week/And when you grow up, you're gonna be a freak/Want a violent girl who's not scared of anything… Help me kill my time 'Cause I'll never be fine You went down to look at old *Dallas Town/Where you must be sick just to hang around/Seen it on TV, how to kill your man/Then like Gacy's scene, a canvas in your hand… Better call your mom, she's out looking for you/In the jail and the army and the hospital too/But those people there couldn't do anything for you… Help me kill my time… *…We never need to talk…*

this is a great cover but i don't like the upbeat ending. the ending in the original is supposed to be ironic, not literally upbeat and optimistic like in this version. it's not saying "it will be over soon" because we're going to come out of all this garbage into some kind of utopian wonderland, it's saying "it will be over soon" as in, "i, and the entire world, will soon be dead, so all this suffering and stupidity will be over".
@Onedavemore3 жыл бұрын
That's kind of Phoebe's whole thing though, melancholy coupled with ironicly upbeat music with self-aware depressive lyrical notes

I love this, but no. Burnham's contempt for the way things are is where this song comes from.
