Phoebe Snow had one of the most beautiful, distinctive voices of my generation. Listen to, inspired Insanity, I Don’t Want the Night to End, Never Letting Go, and of course, Poetry Man to name a few. She was so underrated.

I really miss Phoebe. Live she was unbeatable. Paul McCartney said she sang "Every Night" better than he ever did and it was a shame her music did not get the play time they deserved. Part of the problem was that a lot of her music was hard to put in a category. Not an excuse. She was the best!

My family and I drove to Florida to visit family. My son was only 5 or 6 years old but when we got back to New York all he sang was I wish I was a willow! We must have played that CD a bunch! 😆 We saw Phoebe not long before she passed away. She was truly unbelievable. 💜✌

Phoebe was so underated. I was given a free ticket to an outdoor concert in Tennessee in 1977. I only knew one song she sang which was of course "Poetry Man." I figured for free if I did not like it I was ok because it was FREE! I loved her from that autumn evening through now. I also saw her in concert in Florida where I was born and live now. No one could do a live concert like Phoebe. There is one live concert on KZbin but I do not like it as much. She had such a unique voice. I can remember commercials coming on and it would be that very distinctive voice!

Harpo is the name Phoebe's best friend Charlie used. They used to put on the Marx brothers nose and glasses and run around their neighborhood in New Jersey ringing doorbells. Charlie was the person who pushed her gently to sing. He overdosed and the hospital pumped his stomach. They were keeping him overnight and he said no and left. He died from a heart attack that night. So, some of what is in the song really makes sense when you know that. Not wanting to be a grown up and have to pretend, I won't be back again, have to hide my rage, I'm lost again, I think I'm really scared, etc. I have heard reactors go off on the Marx brothers and the name of the song could mislead some. She really loved this guy and since she was seriously shy we have him to thank for all the music she left us. Thanks for your honest reaction. I see all these people reacting to whatever and I think how have you gotten to the age of 30 and you do not know who someone like Whitney Houston is. I just chose her because I have seen people react to her and others and I find in her case that I do not believe them. The main problem with jazz and other genres is that what I call jazz is not what someone else considers jazz. Some people who have reacted to "Poetry Man" and called it country! I can hear Phoebe Snow's VERY distinctive laugh! She always said she was a frustrated jazz, folk singer. RIP Phoebe we know you are with Valerie Rose and are at peace.

Thanks so much for the info/story about who Harpo was... and yes, just guessing, I imagined Harpo might have been Phoebe herself, but a wrong guess, and the correction is much appreciated. That's really sad.. I'll also add that the phrase "I strut and fret my hour upon the stage" is a near-direct quote form Shakespeare (Macbeth) : "This life, which had been the tomb of his virtue and of his honor, is but a walking shadow; a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." With this quote, the phrase in Phoebe's song takes on a rich double meaning - her literal performance anxiety / stage fright / shyness...but also in the larger sense, her feeling of worry about her life in general - her 'hour upon the stage' was her lifetime. While she worried about it, we know her life was not futile, she was not a poor player on the stage of life, and she signified so much more than nothing. And she will be heard as long as civilization keeps her record alive.

@@tedcole9936 Thanks for your kind reply. Phoebe was a very special person. She was very intelligent, and talented in many areas. With her four octave range she could sing most anything. The last ten years or more of her life she was studying opera and training with a voice teacher. She was not at all like the people who think because they sing a song in French or Spanish they are opera singers. By that definition, Nat King Cole was an opera singer! He made entire albums in Spanish. I am afraid her voice will be lost because it is hard to find her music already.

@@Maya-bu2rf Thanks Maya. It almost feels like you knew Phoebe personally, but I won't pry... I felt very much that a lot of music was being lost forever when various LPs would go "Out of Print" in the 70's and 80s. - things that I knew existed but then were never issued on CD, and they became harder and harder to find in used LP shops in the 90's... But, so much has come back now, and KZbin is now giving me things I never knew existed... old Hendrix basement jams with Steve Stills, McGarrigle sisters live in a living room with Linda Ronstadt, or with EmmyLou Harris.. And old TV clips that played once or twice in the 60's and were "never seen again"... someone saved them and we still have them... Laura Nyro "Save the Country" for example. Buffy Sainte-Marie on Pete Seeger's old TV show.. Early Joni Mitchell on old black & white folk song tv shows. And old Richie Havens and Bill Withers live LPs that I thought were gone forever.. Columbia even started re-printing some pretty rare jazz from the 50's on vinyl. So, I think Phoebe will always be there, always be recoverable... as long as we keep our technological civilization going... I believe true quality will rise and be known to history. Phoebe Snow will be there, of that I have no doubt. I'm optimistic, but guard that old vinyl anyway, if you can.. and sell it or give it to someone who is a true music lover!

@@tedcole9936 Yes, there are a lot of things available on KZbin and other places. I actually got Amazon music because they have all but one of Phoebe's albums streaming. There are also the very first SNL episodes and she is in them with Linda Ronstadt. There are also a lot of the commercials Phoebe sang in. The one that I remember hearing and saying that was Phoebe was the one that said cotton the fabric of our lives. There are a lot of others singing it, but not her. The one with the statue of liberty was a good one. I never saw it on tv because I rarely watched it until recently. I think that is the one that they also changed it so that it was more of a rock sound, but that was lost. The person who had posted it said because she was so enthusiastic about it and they let her rearrange it. I will have to check on that. I only know two people who really like Phoebe. I have all the albums and cds. I finally listened to Etta James singing "At Last." I guess I am weird, but I prefer Phoebe's cover. Paul McCartney said he was always happy when Phoebe sang covers of his songs because it was always great to see how she would interpret them and often he liked her cover better. The one he specifically mentioned was "Every Night".

Back in the 70s there was a lot of guitar playing and group singing, "jamming" with your friends etc. I always loved blues music and loved to sing blues songs. After hearing Phoebe Snow even for the first time I never sang the same afterwards.bobviously she was a jazz virtuoso and I was just some kid strumming a cheap guitar and singing blues songs, but I always wanted to sound as much like her, within those limitations, as I could. The world lost one of the greats when we lost her Check out her version of Teach Me Tonight, at high volume if possible. You won't regret it.

Poetry Man was released in 1974. It was a big hit and she was nominated for a Grammy for best song, best album and best new artist. She did not win, but did not expect to. That album went Gold. What happened to Phoebe Snow was that at the end of 1975 she gave birth to her daughter Valerie Rose. The baby was deprived of oxygen for almost 20 minutes and suffered severe brain damage. The doctors did not expect her to live. They advised her to put the baby in an institution. Phoebe at 25 said no. She took her baby home and cared for her for 31 years. When her mother was still alive she took care of Valerie so Phoebe could be away to record or promote a new album. Phoebe's husband did not hang around. After her mother died Phoebe would sing commercials, and duets on other people's albums. (Paul Simon and Lou Rawls were two) She could earn money for short amounts of time. In 2007 Valerie died suddenly. Phoebe had a really bad time, but after a year she recorded her last album which was Live at Woodstock. In 2010 she had a stroke and went into a coma, and in 2011 she died. Probably more than you wanted to know! I think it makes the music she left us more meaningful. She said she never regretted caring for Valerie because she received more than she gave.

One likes what one likes. And one doesn't like what one doesn't like. Those people who don't understand that or don't respect that, and feel the need to tell you that you are "wrong" are the ones who lack understanding. And in some cases they lack maturity It's one thing to let it be known that one doesn't share your opinion about a book/movie/song etc. (Which is fine to do so). But it's another thing to insist that their opinion is RIGHT and your opinion is WRONG. Or insist that you don't know/understand what you're talking about. Those people who conduct themselves in such ways are displaying a lack of maturity.

@@wavelength7503 Are you talking to me? If you are, it's not a matter of DOING JUDGEMENT. It is about respecting a difference of opinion on things that are very subjective and personal. It's fine to express a difference of opinion on a song/movie/book etc,. It's also find to explain/defend your opinion. But if you are insisting THAT YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, and so someone one who doesn't like what you like DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, or is just not as SMART ABOUT IT AS YOU ARE and if you can't respect a difference of opinion or a difference in tastes when it comes to subjective things, then you are displaying a lack of maturity. Particularly if you are insulting/negative /condescending about it Which goes on all the time on message boards/social media.
