I've had mine for nearly 19 years. Love it. Shot thousands of rounds through it, and it's been great. Customer service is awesome. Sent my slide in for service, and it was lost in the mail. Phoenix arms sent a new slide completely free. Wasn't their fault in any way. Takes a little getting used to with the extra safeties, but once you get it down it's second nature. Great gun and a great price. Great video. Thanks for sharing

I've had this pistol for 2 years. For the $$ it's a great plinking gun. I bought all those same parts shortly after getting mine. Haven't had to use any yet, except the recoil springs. I stumbled onto this vid. I bought mine in 2011 for $130. Yep, that's what it's worth. I have a cracked frame, divot in the hammer, numerous recoil springs I went through. And yep lotta feeding and extracting issues. I just bought more parts for it. Good thing their cheap!! This is a VERY,VERY good vid!! But in conclusion, it is a good budget "emergency" gun. I purchased the M*Carbo HP22A Trigger Springs Kit which gives you about 35% trigger pull reduction. This kit include a lighter sear spring and lighter trigger return spring, plus an extra power recoil spring, which is more stronger and with more spring tension than the flimsy factory recoil spring. Once you replace all 3 springs, you'll be surprised of the lighter, smooth trigger pull. I don't work for M*Carbo or making any $$ out of my comments, I just recommending this kit which makes an excellent upgrade for the HP22A or the HP25A.

Doing that voided the warranty if you add a piece of cut paper clip under the bar gives enough clearance to eliminate that safety you can remove it if needed

I really enjoyed your content. You seem very knowledgeable about this firearm and I find that refreshing. One thing I hate more than anything, is someone making a video on something where they don't even know the model number of the firearm they're supposedly reviewing. I just watched a review before yours where the guy didn't even read the model number correctly off the box. There was a scuff mark on the box over the model number, but not enough for me to be able to read the model number, yet he called it the HP22R instead of A, then later, he didn't even know the capacity of the magazine. Like you, I did a bunch of research before purchasing this hand gun and I haven't even received the gun yet, but I already know the magazine capacity, the proper model number, the take down procedures and the parts I should buy for proper upkeep as well as what ammo to run in it. This is largely because of people like you, who share their knowledge, so people like me can have the best possible experience with this firearm. Thank you!

Just bought one. Iv got several other "edc" options but since walmart and a hand full of other stores frown apon a full size gun i carry both. 22 in my pocket and a 9mm or 44 special on my side. Great tips and mods. Have done both the "safety" mods already but i like the idea of the subsonic last round works great.

Another good video. I got one when I started concealed carry, just wanted a 22 until got comfortable carrying. Yours seem to be a much better build, my first range trip was spent banging the slide back into battery for all 50 rounds. First fix was to literally file the top of the hammer down over 1/8" where it was dragging on slide. Next was order stronger recoil spring and the safety parts to modify so I could keep the original unmodified. Ran mostly cci minimag with no issues. Traded it for a larger caliber pistol, and the new owner was still happy with it 2 years later. May get another one.

I paint the Safeties Green & the Fire's RED .I know this gun & I know if someone were to get it away from me they would not figure out how to fire it before I can get it back. This is the best video yet made on the Phoenix HP-22. Concise and comprehensive. I have owned my Phoenix for several years and still really like it, and I completely agreed with all the points you made. Due to all the particulars, I always thought this pistol would be better suited for more advanced shooters that could appreciate the peculiar safeties, and manage them. New shooters should probably try other rimfire handguns first - the Heritage mfg Rough Rider revolvers are great, but you might need to Loctite nearly every screw first.. Rough Rider revolvers have a tendency to loosen screws just by staring too hard at them..

Great video and very well presented. I am the guy that modifies the mag follower with a pan head screw. Your way works also but one round short is not that critical to me since this is a practice, small game, and range pistol. I do not use it for defense unless it was all I had since rimfire ammo is not reliable enough with common misfires. I agree about parts inspection and recoil spring change after every 1000 rounds. The old recoil spring is compressed considerably shorter than the length of a new one so it for sure needs to be replaced when it gets that short. I do add a very tiny amount of gun grease to slide rails and wear areas to cut down added wear on those friction hot spots. I mostly shoot either CCI standard velocity or Federal Auto Match in mine both are in the factory rated velocity. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve watched your videos a few times, very interesting. I didn’t mention your channel because I never know how someone will react to that, or the legalities. I appreciate the comment. There was a gentleman, some time ago, that sold a “last round hold open” magazine follower on EBay but has since disappeared. In world full of 3D printers you would think someone would be selling something like that. I also tend to use grease on firearms that are not in my EDC rotation. If you use grease on an EDC firearm it will collect a tremendous amount of debris. CLP and other “oil” lubricants will tend to run off, when grease will stay where you put it.

I bought one of those little guns over 30 years ago when they were actually double action handguns the hammer and even the trigger on that gun can actually be remanufactured using stainless steel it is a cool little gun the only trouble I've ever had out of mind was when you tried to clear the gun you had to be real careful make sure it ejected around cuz lots of times it wouldn't in that case if you didn't really check it or was it careful it would still have a loaded round in the chamber so you hadn't really be careful with that little gun but other than that I never had any problems with it

Bought mine in 2006. The firing pin finally gave out and misfiring...but a little tac weld, filing and polishing to add more contact with the worn out hammer it's good to go again. Mine doesn't seem to like aguila standard or anything hot above 1050fps at all.

Ive shot roughly 1000 rds through mine with cheap Winchester mostly but i have recently found a love for cci velocitor rounds, ive shot only maybe 100 so far through it due to the ammo shortage in my area so i need to conserve but i have found it runs flawlessly

530-scan, be careful with that higher velocity stuff - I would use it very sparingly, and only with a fresh spring, like the man said. These Phoenix pistols are made of Zamek, not steel, and they can't take the abuse and punishment steel guns can take. Not trying to be a know-it-all or busybody, just looking out for you.

I'm using the M*Carbo springs. They seem to reduce the recoil impulse a bit more than the factory springs. The Aguila standard pressure is best performing in mine. Thanks for the tip about making the first round loaded in the mag a lower pressure round. It definitely keeps me from firing on an empty chamber.

I got mine with about 200 rounds having been put through it. I've found that Federal standard solids work well. I'm thinking of getting the 5" barrel for 'just because'. Seeing the softness of the hammer, I intend to oil harden it. Failing that, case hardening it would be next.

Good job. This is a great pistol for the price from a company that takes that extra effort with their customer service. I had done the same modifications that you mentioned before seeing this video and it was reassuring to see yours. I had already ordered a couple of extra magazines from the company and was very impressed with their response times. Will be ordering the new slide springs now. The only thing I did different was in addition to using red fingernail polish on the “Fire” lettering I put white fingernail polish on the “Safe” lettering plus a white dot on the safe position of the trigger safety. Just to make it easier on these old eyes. Also a white dot on the front sight and two white dots on the rear sight giving me three white dots for rapid target acquisition. Thank you for posting.

I cracked the frame of my hp22a after shooting about 1400 rounds of remington golden bullet. I should have read the manual. I ended up buying a used hp25a and modifiyng the barrel of the 22lr to fit on the 25acp frame. Ive shot about 500 rounds of aguila standard velocity 22lr through this setup without issues.

The lifetime warranty should have covered the cracked frame as long as the firearm wasn’t modified. I’ve heard stories of people having their entire firearm replaced at no charge ( most likely said that they were using the proper ammo ). This is the first I’ve heard of someone modifying a 22 lr to fit a 25 acp, very interesting. I personally think that the Aguila 1130 FPS round is the best round for this little pistol.

They were going to cover it but fedex wanted to charge me $75 to ship the gun to phoenix arms. I only paid $45 for the hp25a including the ffl transfer so it came out cheaper that way.

Great tips in this video. What kind of accuracy from the bench can you get at 15 or 25 yards? What is the trigger like? Have you weighed the trigger pull? Any videos available showing trigger mods?

After reading your comment I measured the trigger pull, it’s a consistent 5 1/2 lbs. The trigger actually feels really good, slight take up, no creep, definitive wall. I never actually shot this pistol from a bench rest, but I will say that shooting it offhand at various distances, I am actually pretty impressed with the accuracy and that’s without the extended barrel. I’m not aware of any trigger mods, I would imagine polishing the trigger components would improve the trigger pull.

Hello, thanks for your review. i just bought this from a friend. When I took it to the range, i noticed that as i shot it was kicking the mag out causing it to jam. Any clue how to fix that?

This issue is new to me. My first guess would be, the way you grip the firearm, you might be hitting the mag release while operating the firearm. Try firing the weapon with just your right hand (or in a manner that nothing is anywhere near the mag release) and see if you still have the issue. My next thought would be a possible worn out mag release, depending on how many rounds have been put through it.

If you file the strike end of the firing pin nice, square, flat and smooth. It will provide a much larger surface for the hammer when it hits. Greatly reducing the denting. I took the pin and squared it with a precision block and carefully filed the rounded punch pressed edge perfectly square and flat. Now the hammer hits nearly 100% more mass on impact. I'm really surprised that the hammer isn't harder than a honeymoon dick like it should be. Oh well.
